“THE
Today’sBattaashHandicaphonoursanall-timegreatsprinterwhowasdescribed asthe“horseofalifetime”byhistrainer.
Bred at the Ballyphilip Stud in Ireland, the son of leading stallion Dark Angel realised 200,000 Guineas when sold as a yearling to Shadwell in October 2015 at Tattersalls and was put into training with Charlie Hills in Lambourn.
Named Battaash, he demonstrated a lot of potential when making a winning debut at Bath in May 2016, scoring by four lengths in the famous royal blue and white silks of his owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. He was then unplaced in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot and gelded over the summer before ending the campaign with a solid third in the Group Three Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket in the autumn.
Ifhis two-year-old season had shown promise, it was in 2017 that Battaash began to truly show how great he was. Starting at 11-1 after a 253-day absence, he began his three-year-old campaign with a first Listed success in the five-furlong Scurry Stakes here at Sandown Park when he scored comfortably by a length and a quarter
Following that victory, Battaash was back in Esherthe following month forthe Coral Charge overthe same distance on Coral-Eclipse Day.
In a truly outstanding display Battaash made all to win by three and a quarter lengths in the hands of Dane O’Neill, setting a new record time for five furlongs at Sandown Park of 58.57 seconds – a record which still stands today.
That Coral Charge victory was followed in 2017 by success in the Group Two King George Stakes at Goodwood (a race he would also go on to win in 2018, 2019 and 2020) and a first Group One triumph in the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp
Over the course of the next four seasons Battaash would go on to prove pretty well invincible over five furlongs with a further three Group One victories coming in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York (2019 & 2020) and the King’s Stands Stakes at Royal Ascot (2020) His exploits in 2019 saw him rated the world’s best sprinter.
Battaash was retired in 2021, with his owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum sadly having passed away earlier in the same year. In all, Battaash won 13 times in 25 starts and earned over £1.7 million in prize money. A true favourite with the racing public, Battaash was attended to by his long-serving and devoted groom Bob Grace and partnered to all his Group One wins by Shadwell’s retained jockey Jim Crowley.
Now an 11-year-old, Battaash enjoys a happy retirement at Shadwell’s Beech House Stud in Newmarket and makes an annual visit to the National Horseracing Museum.

KASSAYA: Following its run on 19/6/2024 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run.
Probable S.P’s: 5-2 Getreadytorumble (GB), 4-1 Kassaya (GB), 6-1 Lexington Blitz (IRE), 7-1 Pearl of Windsor (GB), 15-2 Gold Star Hero (IRE), 17-2 Nad Alshiba Green (IRE), 28-1 Xanthe (IRE), 33-1 Jungle Drums (IRE)
This stiff 5f will present a different challenge to that which GETREADYTORUMBLE faced when scoring at Brighton and Goodwood last month. Still, he’s clearly going the right way and an 8lb rise for his latest success may not be enough to prevent him from completing the hat-trick. The well-bred Kassaya is of interest on this handicap debut, despite returning from over a year off, while Lexington Blitz is third choice ahead of Gold Star Hero and Pearl of Windsor

Age doesn’t appear to be catching up with TRUESHAN judged on his encouraging reappearance at Longchamp and the 9-y-o is taken to successfully defend his crown, having landed this race 12 months ago Al Nayyir needs to bounce back, but perhaps the addition of cheekpieces will aid his cause and, ifso, hewill be athreat.Term ofEndearment is also accorded respect, but Coltrane, though a smart stayer on his day, now has an air of vulnerability about him.

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
