WELCOME
to Royal Artillery Gold Cup Day The first Royal Artillery Steeplechase meeting was held in 1862, so this year marks our 162nd Anniversary and the 139th running of the race, having lost a few opportunities through war, weather and Covid. The race was first run at Sandown Park in 1878 and we are most grateful to Sandown Park for the support it continues to provide. The Royal Artillery Gold Cup remains a unique regimental race for amateur jockeys, and we, in the Gunners, are proud to be the only regiment in the British Army to hold its own race under Rules at a premier racecourse. We are indebted to our loyal Gold Cup sponsors, Castel, who have been with us since 2018. Royal Artillery Gold Cup Day is, of course, more than just the Gunner Gold Cup, and we are delighted to welcome Team Forces who, apart from sponsoring today, also provide significant funding to provide training for our military jockeys. We would also like to thank Spectra Group (UK) Ltd for its continued support of military racedays through its sponsorship of today’s Spectra Group Alanbrooke Handicap Steeple Chase. A particular vote of thanks must go to our owners and trainers without whose support there would be no Gunner meeting. They have become close friends of military racing. They lose none of their competitiveness in this race, but are generous and kind to our military jockeys in providing them with the opportunity to battle it out for the honours. Gunner Gold Cup Day is the largest gathering of serving and retired Gunners of all ranks in our Regimental calendar. For some soldiers this may be their first taste of racing. In addition to the excellent racing I hope you will enjoy the pageantry of The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, the music of the Pipes and Drums of 19th Regiment Royal Artillery and the historic equipment display provided by the Royal Artillery Museum and the Garrison Artillery Volunteers. Please take the time to walk through the Surrey Hall where all our Regiments have set up focal points for their current members attending today and to greet past members as well. Today we are delighted to again work with the Royal Artillery Association who will be collecting in aid of the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund, which helps so many serving and veteran Gunners and their families when in physical, mental and financial need, as well as supporting comradeship and welfare in the serving and retired Regiment. Many of those attending today have seen active service in UK and around the world; other members of the serving Regiment are not here because they are currently deployed at home and abroad. We wish them all well. We hope you have an enjoyable day. Thank you for coming and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

EACH-WAY BETTING TERMS
Working alongside the Racecourse Association (RCA), bookmakers have introduced standard each-way betting terms across Jockey Club Racecourses. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. Fewer than 3 runners: win bets only, no places offered 3 or 4 runners: all to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms for 3 or 4 runners, this must be at 1/5 odds a place 1-2 5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd 8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th

SECOND RACE
ETALON has been quick to mark himself down as a potentially smart novice with back-to-back victories over fences upon returning to action this winter and Dan Skelton’s charge is fancied to defy another small rise in the weights and complete the hat-trick. PLAY SMARTER Gunsight Ridge was firmly in the mix when falling 4 out at Wetherby in January and he’s a danger. Xcitations, who is 2-2 over this C&D, and Fast Buck complete the shortlist.

9 HURDLES TO BE JUMPED
You Wear It Well took her hurdles record to three wins in four starts, reverting to a forward ride and proving much too strong in the finish. She quickly asserted over her useful opposition to score by seven and a half lengths which gave Jamie Snowden his second win in the race in three years. The Dan Skelton-trained She’s A Saint booked second place and comfortably opposed the Irish-raider Deeply Superficial.

Nicky Henderson won the very first running of this race and saddles two in the field including Aston Martini, who was last seen landing the valuable Weatherbys Digital Solutions Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Lingfield. First past the post in a hard-fought battle, she was demoted on the day for leaning into the runner-up but was later reinstated upon appeal. The progressive mare was an impressive winner on hurdles debut and is now three from three under rules. The five-year-old still has plenty of scope for improvement and does look up to this graded level. Nico de Boinville however prefers Either Or. The six-year-old got off the mark on her fourth attempt in a Point-to-Point and ran a promising contest when runnerup on rules debut in a Warwick bumper. The daughter of Affinsea then improved to land a mares’ novices’ hurdle at the same track, with the front pair pulling well clear of the rest of the field in a stylish performance. There is still room for improvement in the jumping department, but she clearly holds plenty of potential.
Aston Martini still has plenty of scope for improvement but does look up to this gradad level. Jeune Belle was pulled-up behind Aston Martini at Lingfield, but she had excuses after a mistake at the first flight almost unseated the rider, and it was disclosed that she WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW
bled from the nose. She had shown plenty of promise prior to this though, running a mighty race to finish second to an exciting Willie Mullins mare in the Listed mares’ bumper at the Cheltenham November Meeting, historically a strong contest. Lucy Wadham’s six-year-old then extended nicely in the closing stages to land a Lingfield novice hurdle, and connections will be hoping she can get back on track here up in trip. Cherie D’Am was an impressive winner on handicap debut at Aintree on Boxing Day from a mark of 115 and was perhaps worth a little more than the winning margin suggested. Dan Skelton’s mare travelled strongly throughout the contest and won pulling away, but did flash her tail up the run-in. Smiling Getaway was formerly with Dan Skelton but has now won both of her first two starts over hurdles for new trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies. She put eight lengths between herself and an expensive Nicky Henderson recruit in smart fashion last time, and she looks to be a real strong stayer at the trip. A wide-margin winner of a Southwell bumper last term, Olly Murphy’s Little Miss Dante lived up to that promise when winning her first two starts over hurdles in fine style. The form of both of those races has worked out well since, and she shaped like a smart type with plenty more to come. The six-year-old stayed on well to take third in a Listed contest last time at Haydock when perhaps a little too far back to get involved with the leaders. A full brother to the yard’s smart performer Go Dante, she should continue progressing and this sort of test promises to suit. Springtime Promise was a good winner of another Weatherbyssponsored event at Huntingdon last month for Fergal O’Brien and backed that up just a fortnight later with a victory at Sedgefield. She looks to have plenty of stamina and does all her best work late on, so expect the sevenyear-old to be staying on at the finish.

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ARTILLERY GOLD CUP The Royal Artillery Gold Cup is one of the oldest events in the Racing Calendar. The inaugural event was held in 1862 and, following in the footsteps of the Grand Military Meeting, which was first held in 1841, the meeting immediately proved extremely popular with members of the Regiment. The first winner was a horse by the name of Chickahominy, ridden by Captain John Ruck-Keene. He was owned by George Arbuthnot, a famous Royal Artillery Officer (Lieutenant) of the time who had a long and distinguished career in the Regiment and was recommended for the Victoria Cross during his service in India in the 1850s. Sandown Park first hosted the meeting in 1878 which was notable for the success of Swift, who provided Lieutenant Henry Dalbiac with the second of four consecutive winning rides in the race. Dalbiac was another colourful character of the early days of the Gold Cup. He served in several of the Imperial campaigns that took place in the late 1800s and thereafter became the subject of Kipling’s famous work “The Jacket”. In 1949, after a period of ten years without the race due to the outbreak of War in Europe, the Royal Artillery Gold Cup was run again. Times were still hard, with the majority of the Army serving overseas. The popularity of the meeting remained strong, but the availability of suitably qualified jockeys was a problem and in 1960 the decision was made to open the race to former as well as serving Gunners. More recently past and present members of the Armed Forces have qualified to ride. In 1978 the race was privileged with the presence of former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Ten Up, given to Major James Hodges by his godmother, the Duchess of Westminster. By then enjoying a more sedate life in hunter chases, Ten Up proved that the old class was still there by landing the Royal Artillery Cup in 1978, 1980 and 1982. Lance Bombardier Sally Randell became the first woman to win the Royal Artillery Gold Cup in 2011 on Surenaga under the ownership of 100th Regiment Royal Artillery Volunteers. Sally moved on to training racehorses and, together with Fergal O’Brien, they are strong supporters of military racing. Jennys Surprise took the 2016 renewal amid emotional scenes in the winners’ enclosure. The eight-year-old looked well beaten but rallied under pressure to deliver a ‘dream come true’ win for Brodie Hampson in her first ride in the race. The feat was made even more special as
Brodie was riding for her father, who was given just 30 days to live at the beginning of December. Sergeant Mark Hampson, who served in 47th Regiment Royal Artillery for 22 years, was ‘chuffed to bits’ to see his daughter win for the first time in his colours. He sadly passed away just three months later. Brodie continued to do him proud in 2019 riding a perfect race on Carlos De Fruitier to give her two Royal Artillery Gold Cups to her name. Captain Guy Disney and the David Pipe-trained Rathlin Rose made history in 2017 and 2018, becoming the first dual winner since De Pluvinel. Guy, who lost his lower right leg when his vehicle was hit by a grenade while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, was the first amputee jockey to win at a professional racecourse in Britain. Just a few weeks ago, connections of Farceur Du Large were celebrating in our parade ring as he ran out an impressive winner of the Grand Military Gold Cup. Major Will Kellard and Jamie Snowden team up again today trying to replicate what Broken Halo did last year for Bombardier Jody Sole and Paul Nicholls. A unique event in the racing calendar, it is credit to the Committee that the Royal Artillery Gold Cup is as popular as ever. Without their commitment and fortitude, and the wonderful support of Sandown Park, the annual gathering would surely be but a distant memory. It remains only one of the Royal Artillery’s flagship days, hugely enjoyed by the regiment and the racing public alike and long may it continue to be so.
JAMES ROBERT TEMPLER MEMORIAL
MAJOR GENERAL JAMES ROBERT T E M P L E R C B O B E (193 6 – 2 02 3) Today we remember Major General James Templer CB OBE, former Chairman of the Royal Artillery Steeplechase Committee from 1989 to 2008 and a winning rider of the Royal Artillery Gold Cup . General James had an exceptional career as an officer in the Royal Artillery and sadly died on 14th December 2023. During his time as Chairman of the Royal Artillery Steeplechase Committee, General James worked tirelessly to ensure that there was strong regimental support for the Gunner meeting thus making it an annual occasion for a Gunner reunion. He was an accomplished amateur jockey and rode in the RA Gold Cup on three occasions, winning it when riding Brigadier Mark Maunsell’s horse, Pax Vobis in 1962 and 1963. However, as a horseman he will probably be best remembered as the rider of his famous horse M’Lord Connolly on which he won the European 3 Day Event Championships at Burghley in 1962, followed by the International 3 Day Event in Munich in 1963 and Badminton in 1964. Following these successes he was selected to represent Great Britain as an individual and as a member of the 3 day event team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. While commanding 42nd Regiment Royal Artillery in Londonderry in 1975, General James instigated the leasing of a horse, Bobs Birthday, by the Regiment to run in the Gunner Gold Cup in 1976, which duly came 2nd to David Wales on Apache Chief, ridden by young regimental officer Charlie Moore, better known now for his senior roles in racecourse management. It was thanks to the leadership of General James that so many Gunners, past and present, are gathered here at Sandown Park today to continue this historical race meeting.

NOTICES
HBLB CONTRIBUTION PRIZE MONEY
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £684,559 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.
NOTICES
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
PARADE RING ACCESS
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

DRESS CODES
At Sandown Park Racecourse we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather.
