Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Saturday 12:50pm - PEKING OPERA looks an interesting entry for Gary Moore. The gelding by Galileo was a highly rated flat horse previously trained by Aidan O’ Brien. He holds a Triumph Hurdle entry and could be a major player here if taking to hurdles. The Good Doctor was an impressive winner at Fontwell on Boxing Day. A repeat of that performance would put him right in the mix. 1:25pm - JINGKO BLUE (NAP) holds entries for the Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle as well as the Albert Bartlett. He is entitled to come on again for this victory last time out at Newbury. Classic Anthem has won here at Sandown Park over 2 miles and seemed to handle the step up in trip last time out at Plumpton when beaten narrowly at odds of 4/5. Magical King should be more suited to going right handed today. His jumping would need to improve but he does hold each way claims. 2.00pm - HARPER’S BROOK found the opposition too much in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham in November. He steps back in trip today and a repeat of his last run at Ascot would see him in the mix. In Excelsis Deo has been running consistently well without winning. He could be a danger off a feasible mark of 133. 2.35pm - A small but competitive field for what looks to be a cracking renewal of the Grade 1 Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Chase. Venetia Williams won this race in 2022 with L’Homme Presse and saddles Djelo today who will be looking to bounce back from his early exit at Lingfield last time out. He has done nothing wrong this season and it would be no surprise to see him return to the Winner’s Enclosure after his unlucky outing. HERMES ALLEN was no match last time out for the impressive Il Est Francais but has taken to fences well and is very much respected in this company. Le Patron was a big priced winner in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices Chase on heavy ground over two miles here at Sandown Park in December. Colonel Harry finished behind Le Patron on that day but won next time out at Wetherby over a longer trip in the Towton Novices’ Chase. 2 ½ miles may suit Colonel Harry better and may reverse the form against Le Patron this time around.
3.10pm - WEST BALBOA was never travelling in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot but she does hold plenty of ability and a chance is taken that she will return to her previous good form. Scamallach Liath carries a low weight and looks a progressive staying hurdler for Harry Derham. He steps up in class today but runs off an achievable mark. 3.45pm - DOM OF MARY was an easy winner last time out at Plumpton. He stays all day and the ground should be fine for him. He goes up 9lbs in the weights but is not without his chances here. Blackjack Magic ran a very credible 4th place in a competitive handicap at Ascot last time out. This looks a slightly easier task today and should be well in the mix. 4.20pm - San Frandisco was an easy winner on heavy ground at Haydock after Christmas and TOUQUET will have obvious interest in the market and will be entitled to come on further again from his course and distance bumper win here in November.

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED You will occasionally see letters after a horse’s form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at this course. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well-fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders in the racecard you can identify which horses run well at this course and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

EACH-WAY
BETTING TERMS
Working alongside the Racecourse Association (RCA), bookmakers have introduced standard each-way betting terms across Jockey Club Racecourses. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. Fewer than 3 runners: win bets only, no places offered 3 or 4 runners: all to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms for 3 or 4 runners, this must be at 1/5 odds a place 1-2 5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd 8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th

SECOND RACE
A case can be made for all of these but the most persuasive one is for the improving ONETHREEFIVENOTOUT who looks to have got in lightly for his handicap bow and can edge out Nicky Henderson’s likeable Newbury scorer Jingko Blue. Alfie’s Princess, PLAY SMARTER Titan Discovery and Diplomatic Ash all have better days ahead of them too and need factoring into this intriguing contest.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap? In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated? Once a horse has run at least three times in a Flat race, or run in no more than two Flat races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown. In subsequent races if a horse runs better than it’s rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below it’s rating then it will be reduced. Ratings start from around 30 at the lower end of the scale with the average top level horses rated roughly between 115 and 125. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes. Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 71 & 85. So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in. In this instance a horse rated 85 is 5 higher than a horse rated 80 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race. In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together. Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.
EXAMPLE Handicap for horses rated from 71-85; highest weight 9st 7lb Horse A Rated 85 Weight 9st 7lb Horse B Rated 84 Weight 9st 6lb Horse C Rated 80 Weight 9st 2lb Horse D Rated 75 Weight 8st 11lb Horse E Rated 71 Weight 8st 7lb 23

GERRI COLOMBE
17 FENCES TO BE JUMPED
Gerri Colombe maintained his unbeaten record, striking for the second time at Grade 1 level, to land last year’s renewal of the Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase. He still looked to be learning the job but in the hands of Jordan Gainford, who gave him a patient ride, he soon proved why he was last year’s market leader for the Brown Advisory. Despite hanging right on the run-in, he showcased his class to power away from the Nicky Henderson-trained Balco Coastal, who had to settle for second a further two lengths behind.

IMPORTANT
NOTICES
HBLB CONTRIBUTION PRIZE MONEY
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £684,559 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.
NOTICES
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
PARADE RING ACCESS
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

DRESS CODES
At Sandown Park Racecourse we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather.
