WELCOME TO
A very warm welcome to Sandown Park for the 159th Grand Military Gold Cup Meeting It is a huge pleasure to have you here with us today and I hope that you have a really enjoyable - and possibly even profitable – day’s racing. There is always a very special atmosphere about today’s meeting. It is of course partly the excitement of seeing service riders taking on the racecourse’s formidable fences, partly meeting up with old friends, partly the wonderful atmosphere that Sandown Park fosters but mostly because we are always privileged to have such strong and enthusiastic supporters like you. Thank you very much for coming. We are very grateful to Army Sport who is sponsoring the Grand Military Gold Cup for the third year and we are delighted to welcome them back to Sandown Park. We are also delighted to welcome some other special guests. I hope you will be joining us around the Parade Ring at 12.30pm to celebrate three generations of the wider services family as the Chelsea Pensioners, the band of The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the children of Gordon School gather to sing the National Anthem. We are also honoured once again to be able to host a party from the Defence Attaché community in London. We are also delighted to be supported by Walking With The Wounded here today. They support around 2,000 ex-military and their families each year delivering employment, mental health and care coordination programmes in collaboration with the NHS to get those who served, and their families, whether mentally, socially or physically wounded, back on their feet and making a positive contribution once more and we thank them for their unwavering support. You will have noticed that this year’s meeting is back, by popular demand, to being on a Friday and that it is also earlier in the season than our traditional March date. This is because we needed to fit in with Jockey Club Racecourses overall programme and to space the four military races we now enjoy – Plumpton, the Grand Military, the Gunner meeting and Wincanton – across the National Hunt season. And, of course, there would be no racing without our wonderful owners and trainers who field their precious horses and our service jockeys who ride them and who are able to share the weighing room with today’s professional jockeys. Wish them well as they take on the challenges of today’s races, cheer them on and cheer them home. Most importantly, please really enjoy yourselves. Eat, drink, party and go home having had a fantastic day.

THE SANDHURST BAND British Army Band Sandhurst is one of fourteen regular Army bands in the Royal Corps of Army Music, and was formed in 2019 from an amalgamation of the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals and the Band of the Royal Logistic Corps. It is the first band to be permanently based at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst since the disbandment of the Royal Military Academy Band in 1984. Primarily a Symphonic Wind Band, British Army Band Sandhurst also provides smaller ensemble capabilities, such as brass quintet, woodwind quintet, saxophone quartet, fanfare team, brass dectet and a function band. As one of the public faces of the Army, the Band supports a diverse range of national and Defence interests, both at home and around the world. Recently they have been seen on the steps of Old College for the 200th Sovereign’s Parade in the presence of His Majesty King Charles III, they have also been at the British Embassy in Lisbon and Portugal. Most notably they were part of the procession for the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III in April 2023. The British Army Band Sandhurst performs today by kind permission of Major General James Bowder OBE, General Officer Commanding London District.
BEST SHOD COMPETITION THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF FARRIERS The Best Shod Award will take place in The Winners’ Enclosure after The Grand Military Gold Cup. Today’s Best Shod Horse will be judged by Robin May, a Farrier with over forty years’ experience shoeing competition horses and is a former England Shoeing Team member. We caught up with him at his forge in Wokingham to ask him about today’s competition.
1. WHAT IS A FARRIER?
A farrier is the name given to someone who maintains horses’ hooves.
2. CAN A HORSE RUN WITHOUT SHOES?
The rules highlight all horses competing in races must be shod, meaning that they must run with shoes.
3. HOW DOES A FARRIER PLACE A SHOE ON A HORSE’S HOOF? The shoe and nails are attached to a non-sensitive part of the hoof.
4. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A FARRIER?
To become a Farrier you must undertake a five year training course.
5. CAN ANYONE SHOE A HORSE?
You must be qualified to shoe a horse - it is an offence to shoe a horse without a qualification.
6. WHO GOVERNS FARRIERS?
Farriers are trained and examined by The Worshipful Company of Farriers. A Livery company 661 years old this year and since 1977 the Company has the legal obligation to set the standards for horse shoeing. www.WCF.org.uk
7. CAN WOMEN BECOME FARRIERS?
Yes, the Worshipful Company of Farriers have outstanding female farriers in the UK.
8. WHAT ARE RACING SHOES MADE FROM? Racing shoes are made from steel or aluminum.
9. CAN RACEHORSES WEAR PLASTIC SHOES?
Racehorses do not wear plastic shoes because they do not have sufficient traction on the ground.
10. HOW OFTEN IS A RACEHORSE SHOD?
In pre-race training, a racehorse is shod every 4 weeks and shod every time a horse runs a competitive race.
11. CAN A HORSE RUN FASTER BECAUSE OF THE SKILL IN SHOEING?
If a horse is well shod and comfortable with their shoes, it can optimise their performance but not necessarily enhance it.
12. IS IT DANGEROUS SHOEING A HORSE?
Working with any animal has its dangers, but half a ton thoroughbred in peak race condition can offer some scary moments!
13. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT SHOEING AND WHAT WILL YOU BE LOOKING FOR TODAY? A well-trimmed balanced foot with shoes suitable for purpose.
14. WILL THE HORSE WINNING THE BEST SHOD WIN THE RACE? The farrier is a small but important part of the overall training process. It will have a good chance.

Shaken up after two from home, the favourite quickly asserted her dominance and scooted home by a comfortable three lengths for Chris Honour. 40/1 shot Greatest Star ran a stormer to finish second, followed home by Far Sight.

IN FOCUS: JAMIE SNOWDEN Training racehorses is no walk in the park, as many of today’s current top Trainers would agree – but for Jamie Snowden it was a change in direction having served in the British Army up until 2005. Jamie’s connection and association with racehorses has been evident throughout his life. At a young age he would ride out for top trainer, Nigel Twiston-Davies before heading off into further education at Newcastle University. Here he continued to ride out for some of the UK’s Top Trainers. During his stint in the British Armed Forces, and because of his experience riding horses prior to that, Jamie became an incredibly popular choice for our military races here at Sandown Park. In the space of six years between 2002-08, Jamie won the Grand Military Gold Cup and Royal Artillery Gold Cup four times…each! His record in both races is nothing short of astonishing. His first win came in the Grand Military Gold Cup in 2002 aboard 12 year-old FOLLY ROAD. Remarkably, Jamie only found out he would be taking part in the race less than 24 hours before the off due to the horse’s original rider being unavailable. It is safe to say he didn’t look back from there in our military races. Wins followed in the Grand Military Gold Cup in 2005, 2006 and 2007 all aboard horses trained by Champion Trainer, Paul Nicholls. Jamie served as a Pupil Assistant across the 2003-04 season in Paul’s yard and it was this relationship that yielded him so much success in the race. All four of Jamie’s wins in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup also came aboard Paul Nicholl’s horses. Having been in the King’s Royal Hussars between 20022005, Jamie left active military service and concentrated his efforts on becoming a racehorse trainer. Between 2005-2008 he was Assistant Trainer to Nicky Henderson, before going it alone in mid-2008. Since then, Jamie has gone from strength to strength in the training ranks and is one of the most widely regarded and respected Trainers in British Jump Racing. He has seen major success, including training Cheltenham Festival winners and many other Graded winners, including YOU WEAR IT WELL who won the Grade 2 Jane Seymour’s Mares Novice Hurdle here in 2023. She would go on to win at the Cheltenham Festival just a few weeks later. A very successful trainer with over 400 winners to his name, and an accomplished rider with heritage rooted in today’s feature race. How long will it be before he trains a winner of the Grand Military Gold Cup?
SPECIAL CARGO: 40 YEARS ON The Grand Military Gold Cup has been won by some remarkable horses in its extensive and rich history. In recent years, fan favourites such as LOOSE CHIPS, LE REVE and ROLLING DYLAN have all been successful. Digging back further into the record books, CHARLES DICKENS was a three-time winner between 1970-72. No horse, however, stands out more in the history books than SPECIAL CARGO.
Owned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, Special Cargo was a horse that defied all the odds throughout his career. Tendon injuries had often plagued him, but despite two years off the track between 1982-1984, he returned to put up arguably his best performances in that season itself. Sandown Park was a course that Special Cargo could very much call home. He won at the course seven times in total, which included three consecutive Grand Military Gold Cups – an achievement only equalled by KLAXTON and CHARLES DICKENS since 1950. He is also the joint-oldest winner of the race since 1950, winning his third Grand Military Gold Cup at the age of 13. The only other horse being Brunton Park in 1991. For all three of his wins in the Grand Military Gold Cup, Special Cargo was accompanied by jockey Gerald Oxley and trained by Fulke Walwyn, himself a successful jockey who won the 1936 Grand National aboard REYNOLDSTOWN. As a trainer, Fulke also trained winners of Gold Cups, Champion Hurdles and King George VI Chases however Special Cargo will have no doubt held a special place in his heart. Training a winner for any member of the Royal family is an honour most trainers crave, let alone Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother who was so passionate about her horseracing.
Special Cargo’s first Grand Military Gold Cup win in 1984 came off the back of a long absence of two years. He won two prep races in short time at Sandown Park leading into the race before showing he was as good as ever when winning today’s feature race. That would not be his final foray to Sandown Park in that season, winning one of the most iconic renewals of the Whitbread Gold Cup (now known as the bet365 Gold Cup) in a three-way photo finish. His win in that race looked unlikely throughout, until a remarkable late surge up the Sandown Park hill saw him claw back his rivals. The most remarkable of his three Grand Military Gold Cup victories was arguably his third and final win. Jockey Gerald Oxley broke one of his irons after jumping the final railway fence and proceeded to complete the rest of the race without either of his feet in stirrups. Jumping the second last, Special Cargo looked beaten and that picture only looked clearer when he jumped the last, but as was his tradition he revelled climbing the Sandown Park hill and again got the better of a photo finish. This win would also form part of a treble on that day for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. In 2001, a statue of Special Cargo was erected at Sandown Park overlooking the parade ring, which can be visited here today (pictured below). The statue commemorates not only Special Cargo’s remarkable record at Sandown Park, but also Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother’s affiliation and love of Sandown Park. She was here to unveil the statue when it was revealed to the public.

A father of two talented pony racing mad daughters, this is a surname that looks to feature for many years to come.
THE GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP (sponsored by Army Sport) The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy of Caprice And Foal
The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy of Caprice and Foal will be presented today to the winning trainer of The Grand Military Gold Cup(sponsored by Army Sport). Caprice belonged to Captain W H Eve (13th Hussars). She carried him at the head of his squadron in the cavalry charge at the Battle of Lajj, south of Baghdad, on 5 March 1917. Captain Eve was killed and the mare received many wounds. Over a year later, when she had recovered, she was recognised in the ranks of an Indian Cavalry Regiment. She was returned to her own Regiment and taken to her retirement in England. In May 1920, she had a foal by Gay Lally. The Officers of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own) commissioned a statuette representing Caprice and her foal and adopted the statuette as their Regimental wedding present. The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy is the present which the Officers of the Regiment gave to His Royal Highness in May 1935, on the occasion of his marriage. In 1975, Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, gave the statuette to the Grand Military Race Committee, of which her late husband was Chairman for 38 years. This was done with the approval of the Colonel, 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO), and some of the Officers who subscribed to the wedding present in 1935. 13 March 1976 saw the first race for The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy, in the presence of Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

Broken Halo completed a military Gold Cup double here last March when winning the Grand Military Gold Cup in good style. Only coming off the bridle after the last, having cantered through the race under LBdr Jody Sole, the eight year-old proved too strong for this field to win by five lengths and justify the short odds. Sgt Nathan Rahman, who claimed 7lb, was the only one to keep tabs on the runaway winner on the Charlie Longsdon-trained Almazhar Garde.

FIFTH RACE
EAST INDIA EXPRESS didn’t quite come up to expectations in a good novice at Newbury last time but he was impressive on his previous outing and the form is strong, so he takes marginal preference over his stablemate Spring Note, an emphatic PLAY SMARTER winner at the same track last month. Clondaw Royal arrives on the up and makes plenty of appeal.

NOTICES
HBLB CONTRIBUTION PRIZE MONEY
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £684,559 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.
NOTICES
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
PARADE RING ACCESS
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather.
