WELCOME TO
A warm welcome to Betfair Tingle Creek Day here at Sandown Park. Today promises to be the highlight of our Jump racing calendar and features three Grade 1 races – the Betfair Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, the Betfair Tingle Creek and the Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle. The latter was due to run at Newcastle Racecourse last weekend, but adverse weather conditions have meant that Sandown Park will have the honour of being the caretaker of the race for them this year and we thank them for their support. I would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to our sponsors on today’s card, Betfair and Pertemps. Their support is crucial to Sandown Park being able to run such worldclass racedays and we wish them an enjoyable day. Today’s racing will showcase some of the best horses in training, with a blockbuster day in store. Our flagship race, the Betfair Tingle Creek has been won in the past by the likes of DESERT ORCHID, KAUTO STAR, SPRINTER SACRE, SIRE DE GRUGY and ALTIOR. Today we could see another star join this list as JONBON takes his place, having proved himself to be a leading player in the two-mile division last time out at Cheltenham. He has already won two Grade 1s here at Sandown Park, so clearly has a liking for our course. Whilst not being the feature race today, The Betfair Fighting Fifth hurdle sees the return of the most popular horse in training – CONSTITUTION HILL. We are so delighted to be able to welcome him back to the course, the site of his first ever Grade 1 win, and we will be watching on with anticipation to see if he can maintain his remarkable unbeaten run. I also couldn’t move on without giving a nod to the Betfair Henry VIII Novices’ Chase as well. This Grade 1 has turned out many a future star over the years, not least in its last two renewals with EDWARDSTONE (2021) and JONBON (2022) running out impressive winners. Keep your eye out today for another rising star. Off the track today we have lots of festive fun to look forward too. We have the London City Oompah Band performing live in the Esher Hall after racing finishes, as well as the Cobham Band singing us out with some Christmas Carols in the Surrey Hall at 3.45pm. Throughout the day you can grab a selfie courtesy of our inflatable snow globe in the Grandstand, and don’t forget to drop off your present for our Gifting Scheme in aid of Lower Green Community Centre. All that remains is for me to wish you an enjoyable day with us here at Sandown Park and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Sarah Drabwell General Manager – Sandown Park Racecourse
DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING SATURDAY 6TH JANUARY VETERANS’ CHASE DAY The first fixture of the new year at Sandown Park holds an afternoon of quality Jump racing. This fixture is always packed full of thrills and what better way to get 2024 off to a flying start!

FACTS
& STATS
THE BETFAIR HENRY VIII NOVICES’ CHASE The Henry VIII chase has a fine record for producing stars of the future. This two mile chase has been graced in the past by many a superstar, not least Altior in 2016, with the race forming part of his record-beating run of Grade 1 wins. He would also later go on to win the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase, today’s feature, and that has become a common theme in recent years. 2021’s winner, Edwardstone, followed the same path in winning the Henry VIII followed by the Betfair Tingle Creek in 2022 and today’s Tingle Creek favourite, JONBON is also looking to do the same. If history is anything to go by, keeping a close eye on the outcome of this Novice Grade 1 could be a shrewd move. GRADE 1 TOTAL PRIZE FUND OF

JONBON
13 FENCES TO BE JUMPED
Jonbon continued his impressive progression over fences when taking last years renewal under an excellent Aidan Coleman. The well bred brother to Douvan kept things simple front the front and fairly routed his three rivals. He was entitled to do so at odds of 2/11 and duly obliged in the fashion of a supremely talented animal. He’ll be hoping to continue his fine Grade One form when landing our feature race today, the Betfair Tingle Creek.

TODAY'S RACE
REMEMBERING SIRE DE GRUGY (2006-2023) With the staging of the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown Park today we celebrate the life of one of its past heroes, Sire De Grugy, who took the honours in the Grade One contest a decade ago in 2013 and again in 2015. Trained by Gary Moore throughout his career and ridden by his son Jamie on all bar two of his 42 starts (his brother Josh took the ride on the other two occasions), the Preston Family’s son of My Risk was a true superstar of the two-mile chasing division. While he had shown good form over hurdles, including when winning the Grade Two Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle at Kempton Park, it was when sent over fences that Sire De Grugy really came into his own. His novice season culminated with an impressive success over more experienced rivals in the 2013 Celebration Chase on Jump Finale at Sandown Park. That promise was more than built on in the 2013/14 season when Sire De Grugy won six of his seven starts including all four of the UK’s Grade One two-mile chases – the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase, Ascot’s Clarence House Chase, the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and the Celebration Chase back at Sandown Park.
While injury interrupted his 2014/15 season, he returned to form in the 2015/16 campaign which was capped with a battling three-quarter length victory in the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase. On his final Tingle Creek appearance in 2016, he was the gallant length runner-up to Un De Sceaux. At the time of his retirement in December 2017, Sire De Grugy had won 17 of his 42 starts and earned almost £900,000 in prize money. Always the sweetest and gentlest of souls, Sire De Grugy spent time with Retraining Of Racehorses at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket in between enjoying his well-deserved retirement at Gary Moore’s yard in West Sussex, where he was doted upon. Sadly, Sire Du Grugy passed away at the age of 17 in August this year. Paying tribute, Jamie Moore said: “He meant the world to me and was part of the family. “He’d call for me every night and day from his stable and he was doing that right until the very end. He was everything to me and he had the heart of a lion.” Truly the horse of a lifetime, Sire De Grugy will always be remembered.
FACTS
& STATS
THE BETFAIR TINGLE CREEK
One of the stand-out two mile chases of the season, the Betfair Tingle Creek attracts the best of the best. First run in 1969 as the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, the race has been graced by some of the true greats in its deep history. Desert Orchid is a name that jumps out on any roll of honour and won the race back in 1988 under Simon Sherwood. 11 years later the races’ most successful horse, Flagship Uberalles won the first of this three consecutive victories, spanning 1999-2001. Paul Nicholls won six renewals on the bounce from 2005-2010 with Kauto Star, Master Minded and Twist Magic sharing two wins a piece. Paul Nicholls himself is the race’s leading trainer with a remarkable 12 wins in total. Fast forwarding to more recent times and the list of illustrious names doesn’t stop, with Sprinter Sacre (2012), Sire De Grugy (2013 & 2015) and Altior (2018) all etching their names into history. Today could see us add another name to that list as the seemingly unflappable Jonbon lines up as a strong favourite. Having already won two Grade 1s at Sandown Park alone in his career, it will take an impressive performance to stop him. GRADE 1 TOTAL PRIZE FUND OF

13 FENCES TO BE JUMPED
An excellent looking renewal of the Betfair Tingle Creek went the way of Edwardstone and Alan King. Aidan Coleman set out to once again make all aboard Gentlemen De Mee. The pair led for most of the race but were headed four out and could find no extra. Shishkin had been well punted before the race but could only manage third. Greaneteen was prominent throughout but did not have the extra gear to go with Edwardstone, who came home an emphatic nine length winner.

Following a lengthy absence, HIGHLAND HUNTER shaped with plenty of promise when runner-up at Kelso 6 weeks ago. With the forecast rain very much in his favour, he’s given the nod to confirm the promise of that run now. Last year’s winner Ashtown Lad was below his best on return but this has likely PLAY SMARTER been on his agenda for a while and better can be expected. Last month’s Grand Sefton runner-up Percussion, Undersupervision and potentially well-treated Now Where Or When complete the shortlist.
