EVENING RACING
TUESDAY 16 MAY 2023

TUESDAY 16 MAY 2023
Britain’s Most Prestigious Evening Meeting
THURSDAY 25 MAY TICKETS FROM £20
Welcome to Sandown Park where we are looking forward to an action-packed evening of racing – our first evening meeting of the 2023 Flat season.
We have six races on today’s cards, including two very competitive Novice races and our feature race, the Listed Heron Stakes
The Heron Stakes is a race that Sandown Park has hosted since 2007 and prior to that, was hosted by our neighbour course Kempton Park It was formerly part of our Brigadier Gerard card, which comes later this month, but was moved to this meeting in 2021
The Heron Stakes has some impressive winners on its roll of honour since moving to Sandown Park in 2007 Without Parole, Zonderland, King of Comedy and last year’s winner, My Prospero are just some that jump out to demonstrate the calibre of horse drawn to this contest
Last year’s renewal saw the above mentioned My Prospero battle it out with Royal challenger, Reach For The Moon who was one of the later notable runners for Queen Elizabeth II It was My Prospero that came out on top that day, but the Royal association continues into this year as the much-touted Slipofthepen takes his chance ahead of a possible tilt at this year’s Betfred Derby, at neighbouring Epsom Downs. Sandown Park is hugely proud to be able to provide such fantastic opportunities for talented horses like the ones that can be seen on today’s card
I would like to take this opportunity to thank today’s sponsors – Chasemore Farm and Darley. Their generous support is integral to this raceday and we wish them an enjoyable day with us
This is just the start of our Flat racing season and we have many more racedays just over the horizon. Brigadier Gerard evening on Thursday 25 May offers unrivalled evening racing, featuring the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes, or if you’d like to join us for a weekend raceday then Gentlemen’s Day takes place on Saturday 17 June before our attention switches to the Coral-Eclipse Summer Festival on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 July.
I hope that you have a fantastic time at Sandown Park this evening and wish the horses and their connections the very best of luck

Mostly newcomers, and the market should provide further clues, but George Boughey’s GRACEFUL THUNDER is bred to be sharp, and makes plenty of appeal on paper Andrew Balding’s Flora of Bermuda cost a pretty packet when re-sold as a 2-y-o and has to be highly respected, along with once-raced Miss Mach One.

GERT LUSH should be all the sharper for her recent Bath reappearance and the booking of William Buick catches the eye so she’s the suggestion. Last year’s winner New Heights hasn’t fired in 2 AW outings this spring but it could be a different story back here and she’s feared most ahead of Tom Dascombe’s Mountain Queen.

At Sandown Park Racecourse we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather

All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
