PARADE OF CHAMPIONS

Today we are delighted to be able to welcome some of the standout performers from the 2022/23 season to Sandown Park Head to the parade ring immediately after the first race to see three champion horses one more time before their summer holidays!

CONSTITUTION HILL

Undoubtedlythestarofthe2022-23season,ConstitutionHillistheflagshipperformer ofNationalHuntRacing, andhehascertainlynotdisappointedthisseason.Aflawless campaign, culminating in victories at both the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree, has seen him win four Grade One’s, taking his winning streak to seven. Trained by Nicky Henderson, and always ridden expertly by Nico de Boinville, Constitution Hill in full flow is a joy to watch. We are delighted to welcome him to Sandown Park today and look forward to what the future may hold for this exciting horse.

SHISHKIN

Having started the season with a lacklustre display in the Betfair Tingle Creek, it was exciting for all those watching to see Shishkin step up in trip later in the season, and he did not disappoint! A fifth Grade One victory at Ascot was followed up by a tilt at the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, where he flew up the hill only to be denied a short distance by Envoi Allen. Stepped up to three miles for the first time at Aintree, Shishkin came alive and a good jump at the last fence sealed his first victory over this extended distance Trainer Nicky Henderson has said that the Ladbrokes King George at Kempton Park could be on the cards for next season as Shishkin looks to prove himself as one of the greats

YOU WEAR IT WELL

Nine years on from his first Festival success, trainer Jamie Snowden experienced the thrill of a Cheltenham winner again when You Wear It Well made all under a well-timed ride by Gavin Sheehan. This tough mare, who only suffered two defeats this season, both when in against the opposite sex, was also a winner here at Sandown Park, when taking the Grade 2 Jane Seymour Novices’ Hurdle The future certainly looks bright for her.

CHAMPION TRAINER

PROFILE: Paul Nicholls needs no introduction. From his base in Ditcheat, Somerset he has conquered just about everything that Jump racing has to offer. With wins stretching far and wide across the country, it is no surprise to see Paul claim his 14th Trainers Championship this year.

His feature wins this year include Bravemansgame winning the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase at our neighbour course, Kempton Park and Stage Star winning at this year’s Cheltenham Festival Expect him to be back for more next season

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEASON

There is only one place to start, and that is with the superstar Bravemansgame. King George conqueror and Gold Cup second. The son of Brave Mansonnien is an absolute joy to watch in full tilt and you’d struggle to find a more natural jumper,we can’twaitto see him again nextyear

Stage Star built on his excellent handicap win before the Festival when taking the Turners’NovicesChaseundertheexcellent Harry Cobden. The horse was in a terrific rhythm, and despite being headed three out he battled back gamely to take the prize.

The 2022/23 season has been no different for JP McManus with over 60 winners and £1,500,000+ in prize money. This year will see him win for the seventh successive season, and the 15th time this century in Britain and sets a record that will take some surpassing in the future.

With over 40 wins this season to date, he has shown an abundance of potential that is sure to land him significant rides over the years to come. His association with Trainer, Ben Pauling has been a huge benefit to Luca, with wins aboard horses such as Shakem Up’Arry, Bangers And Cash and Slipway all featuring in a memorable season. The 22 year old won’t forget this season in a hurry and no doubt will have many more big seasons to come.

PROFILE: Following in the footsteps of giants is never an easy thing to do, but Brian Hughes is already establishing his own legacy as a multiple Champion Jockey. Before winning his first title, the previous two winners of the Champion Jockey title were Richard Johnson and AP McCoy so the bar was already very high, but since his first title in 2020, Brian has gone from strength to strength. Today will see him claim his third title in the last four years and he doesn’t look to have any intentions of stopping there!

CONSTITUTION HILL

There are very few adjectives out there to describe Constitution Hill accurately. Stunning. Spectacular. Perhaps even unbeatable?Ifhe carriesonfor theremainder of his career in the form he has shown this season then unbeatable could very well be the word After a dominant Novice campaign in the 2021/22 season which saw him take the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, expectations were high coming into this season Those expectations were well placed Still unbeaten under rules, the 2022/23 season has seen him secure four Grade 1 victories (from four starts) and thatincludesthis year’s ChampionHurdlewhich he won withoutever leaving third gear. Is there anything out there that can stop him? It doesn’t look like it at the moment and we’re grateful to have such a star lighting up Jump racing every time he sets foot onto a course.

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS

We may not get to see him very often, but when we do see him it is more than worth the wait The Willie Mullins-trained sevenyear-old was widely touted as a strong Cheltenham Gold Cup chance at the start of the season, heading many a market, and that confidence was to prove wellplaced as he took racing’s showpiece under the calmest of rides by Paul Townend. His season started out in the John Durkan chase in December 2022, where he made very light work of a select, but still talented, field. He wouldn’t be seen again until February at the Dublin Racing Festival in the Irish Gold Cup. This was the race that everyone expected him to show his class, and he did just that, fending off any challenge with the simplest of efforts All roads pointed to Cheltenham and, despite looking a long way back throughout, his talent shone through and Jump racing’s showpiece travelled home with the Willie Mullins team Same again next year? He will take some pegging back despite a recent defeat at Punchestown

HONEYSUCKLE

What could we possibly say about Honeysuckle that hasn’t already been said? Her partnership with Rachael Blackmore has lit up the Jump racing scene for the last few years and this year would prove to be her final year A final chance to show just how good she is Early indications were that she might just have been past her best coming into this season. Her seasonal reappearance came in the Hatton’s Grace (a race she had won for the last three years prior) but it wasn’t to be a fourth success, tiring in the latter stages and finishing third The emergence of Constitution Hill combined with a second defeat, to State Man this time, in the Irish Champion Hurdle led connections to re-route her to the Mares Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival Punters were hopeful rather than certain of a victory, but confidence would have been well placed as Jump racing’s power couple got up onemoretime, onwhatwastobeherfinalouting, tosendthecrowdintoraptures. Alwayswillingtobattletotheveryend, awininthisyear’sawardwouldbeafitting testament to not just her achievements this year, but in her career as a whole.

Racing Post host their annual jumps horse of the year award and this year we’ve had some real stars, so lets take a look at the contenders...

BRAVEMANSGAME

Paul Nicholls and staying chasers are a match made in heaven and yet again that is proving to be the case with his latest prodigy, Bravemansgame. The Ditcheatbased trainer has, over the years, worked with and nurtured some of Jump racing’s most iconic names and there is a chance this horse could go on to achieve similar feats if his accomplishments this season are anything to go on Starting out in the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Weatherby, Bravemansgame had gone slightly under the radar due to the highly rated favourite, Ahoy Senor. However, it was to be the former that would come home first, with a commanding victory in the Grade 2. Next stop en-route was the King George VI ChaseatKemptonPark–aracePaulNicholls has held particularly close to his heart over the years. It would be yet another win for trainer and horse as Bravemansgame saw off all challengers to land the prestigious Grade 1 contest. It was always suggested the Gold Cup may not suit him, but he proved all doubters wrong with an incredibly game performance to finish second to another of our finalists, Galopin Des Champs. A horse that has had a fantastic season and one to watch out for next year

CORACH RAMBLER

The flag-bearer for Scotland in the 2022/23 season. Corach Rambler had already established himself as a top quality staying chaser in the 2021/22 season having won the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore campaigned him very shrewdly this year with just the one run before this year’s Cheltenham Festival which came in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury. He finished a staying on fourth that day so connections battened down the hatches and waited for the Grand National weights. Protecting his mark would prove to be the right call as a second win in the Ultima at Cheltenham was followed by a victory in the Randox Grand National at Aintree in April. Smart training and pure talent have rightly put this horse on the shortlist for horse of the year

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2023

It’s all come together for KANSAS DU BERLAIS this spring and he’s selected to complete a hat-trick now switching to handicap company for the first time. The J P McManus-owned Nicky Henderson pair Iberico Lord and Under Control likely have more to offer and head the many dangers. Paul Nicholls’ excellent record in this also earns Killaloan a place on the shortlist.

THE bet365 CELEBRATION CHASE

RACE DESCRIPTION: The highest class race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb although fillies and mares do receive a 7lb allowance.

GRADE 1 RUN OVER ONE MILE, SEVEN FURLONGS AND 99 YARDS

13 FENCES TO BE JUMPED

Paul Nicholls Greaneteen rounded off what had been a fantastic season when capturing the bet365 Celebration Chase. By winning, he also made it back-to-back wins after his success in 2021, when he defeated the legendary Altior, himself a three-time winner of the race. He had already claimed the Tingle Creek earlier that season and looked in a league of his own when bolting up by 12 lengths.

BET365 GOLD CUP HANDICAP CHASE

As we reach the end of the National Hunt season, all eyes turn to Sandown Park and one of the biggest Jump racing meetings of the year – bet365 Jump Finale. This fixture is the traditional end point for the Jump season and as such we get to celebrate everything that has taken place in our current season and look forward to what the next has in store

Ourfeaturerace isthebet365GoldCupHandicapchase, runoverthree miles and five furlongs. The race was first run here in it’s current format in 1957 and is a race steeped in history and heritage, much like the fixture it takes place at.

The first winner of the race was Much Obliged in 1957. Back then, the race was known as the Whitbred Gold Cup due to it’s sponsorship by Whitbred Brewers. From there the race has grown into the prestigious handicap that we see today with horses such as the mighty Arkle, Mill House, Diamond Edge, Desert ‘Dessie’ Orchid and Tidal Bay all putting in tremendous performances to lift the trophy. NoperformancewasmorespectacularthanthatofArklein1965.Despitehislofty weight of 12st 7lbs (a weight not seen today on course) he took down a talented field in what is defined as one of the greatest weight-carrying performances in racing history.

The race’s most successful trainer to date is Fulke Walwyn who has won the race seven times. His first winner was in the second running of the race courtesy of Taxidermist in 1958 before, in 1967, Mill House produced another stunning weight-carrying performance off of 11st 11lbs to win the race. This would be Mill House’slastmajorwinonaracecourseashewasretiredthefollowingseasondue to consistent injury issues.

Itisimpossibletoflickthroughthehistoryofthebet365GoldCupwithouttaking a moment to talk about racing’s beloved ‘Dessie’ Desert Orchid His beautiful white-like appearance ensured he was a fan favourite throughout the 1980s and a win here in 1988 under top weight only further enhanced his reputation as a true great of Jumps racing. He would go on to win four King George VI Chases, a Tingle Creek Chase and, of course, the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1989.

Recent years have also seen some memorable renewals. Tidal Bay was another hugely popular horse among racing fans and he was yet another horse to win this race off of top weight under the guidance of Daryl Jacob in 2012 His uncharacteristically high head carriage meant that he was a challenging ride but his abundance of talent was more than enough to compensate.

Father and son duo, Peter and Sean Bowen teamed up for a family affair in 2017 thanks to Henllan Harry and, just last year, Hewick took the short trip over the Irish Sea to plunder the race for his trainer Shark Hanlon Hewick would go on to win the American Grand National later that year

History tells us that this race can produce superstars and we wait with bated breath to see if another steps up to the mantle this year

THE bet365 GOLD CUP HANDICAP CHASE

RACE DESCRIPTION: This historic event is a handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards run over three miles, four and a half furlongs Unlike most other handicaps there are no ratings restriction here, so some classy performers may be tempted to take part in a race that has a rich history. However, the same principle of handicapping exists, so a horse officially rated 145, such as Tea Clipper, carries 5lb more than the likes of Kitty’s Light and Annual Invictus both rated 140.

Hewick has been a real star for connections over the last couple of years and it was great to see him here at Sandown Park last year. The Irish raider came into last year’s race having pulled up after a bad mistake in the Midlands National but more than made amends in this race 12 months ago. He seemed to relish the quicker ground and fairly bounced away jumping the Pond Fence to record a famous victory.

KITTY’S LIGHT was an unlucky second here in 2021 before placing third off a 5lb higher mark 12 months ago so can make it third time lucky onthe back ofhis Scottish National success where he travelled more sweetly than is often the case in refitted cheekpieces, which are again sported here. Upwardly-mobile novice Coolvalla could emerge as the chiefthreat in his bid for a remarkable sixth win ofthe term, with Revels Hill and handily-weighed Tea Clipper completing the shortlist. THE bet365 OAKSEY CHASE

RACE DESCRIPTION: Grade 2 races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up here. Initially, the weights in this two mile, six and a half furlong steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or 2 success. TOTAL PRIZE FUND

GRADE 2 RUN OVER TWO MILES SIX FURLONGS AND 164 YARDS

21 FENCES TO BE JUMPED

LASTYEAR’S WINNER SAINT CALVADOS

Saint Calvados benefited from a change of tactics and was given a soft lead under Harry Cobden. He jumped excellently throughout the contest and despite being shaken up in the back straight he always looked to be in control. He’s a horse that has a serious amount of ability but has sometimes struggled to put it altogether on the track, so it was great to see him winning a big one last year.

HEWICK was running well before he came down in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and, provided he’s none the worse for that, he should be able to capitalise on this drop in grade. Solo will be a danger if allowed his own way in front and Fantastic Lady deserves a mention on the back of an excellent second in the Topham.

THE bet365 SELECT HURDLE

RACE DESCRIPTION: Another high-class Grade 2 contest on today’s card, this time a two mile, five and a half furlong hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. This race, again much like the other Graded contests today, has the weights allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 2 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success.

After being beaten 18 lengths at Aintree a few weeks prior, Paul Nicholls charge looked vulnerable conceding weight to all his rivals. Stablemate Scaramanga was the pick of Harry Cobden but it was Lorcan Williams and Paul Nicholls who returned the prize to Ditcheat. He put in a gutsy performance from the front, with two slick jumps in the straight securing his third Grade 2 success.

PLAY SMARTER

Having been unable to lay a glove on Honeysuckle at the Cheltenham Festival, THEATRE GLORY should find this assignment much easier, so Nicky Henderson’s 6-y-o gets the verdict to notch a first pattern success. Thyme Hill couldn’t get into any sort of rhythm in the Brown Advisory last month, so he’s put forward as the main danger back hurdling, with Knappers Hill completing the shortlist.

ICEO has been kept fresh for this since his Imperial Cup win and, with the longer trip a potential source of further improvement, can provide the Paul Nicholls stable with a third successive win in this concluding race of the season. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards.

In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
