SANDOWN PARK RACECOURSE
FRIDAY 28 APRIL 2023
OFFICIAL RACECARD - £3.00
Britain’s Most Prestigious Evening Meeting
THURSDAY 25 MAY TICKETS FROM £20
A warm welcome back to Sandown Park as we open our gates for the bet365 Spring Celebration, our first flat racing fixture of the season.
We have seven races today and I would like to take this opportunity to thank bet365 for their continued support across this weekend. We wish them a thoroughly enjoyable day with us.
Our feature race today is the bet365 Classic Trial run over one mile two furlongs, from which a Betfred Derby winner may emerge Last year’s winner, Westover, was a gallant third in the Derby, before winning the Irish equivalent, whilst in 2021 Adayar was a runner up at Sandown Park, before winning the big one in June
Racegoers are encouraged to enjoy our broad range of facilities including a variety of bars and restaurants located in the Surrey Hall in the Grandstand as well as concession stands throughout the course We also encourage those in Premier to explore our newly updated Sandown View Bar, offering something to everyone’s taste.
Off the track there is roaming music entertainment by the Brass Squad as well as members of the Alzheimer’s Society on site to raise funds and provide racegoers an opportunity to gain some key advice on the signs and symptoms of dementia, a condition which 900,000 people are currently living with in the United Kingdom and is the biggest killer outside of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Looking ahead, tomorrow is our final day of the jumps season, bet365 Jump Finale, before the flat season progresses towards the unmissable summer spectacular Coral-Eclipse weekend on Friday 7 & Saturday 8 July We recommend purchasing tickets for all our fixtures well in advance through our website www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/sandown Hospitality packages and restaurant bookings are still available for the Coral-Eclipse but selling out fast.
I hope that you have a fantastic time at Sandown Park today and wish the horses and their connections the very best of luck

Despite the small field, this looks likely to be an informative 3-y-o contest for the season ahead and LOCAL DYNASTY is fancied to make a winning start to life in handicaps and take his record to 4-5 on reappearance. Legend of Leros progressed again after 6 months off when third at Kempton earlier this month so he may emerge as the main danger, ahead of the returning Saxon King,

Hard to see past 2021 Derby hero ADAYAR, who was seen just twice last year but proved he retains all his ability with a fine showing in the Champion Stakes. This looks a good starting point for him ahead of what could be another big year Anmaat went from strength to strength in 2022 and is the obvious danger although he has to concede 5lb to his high-class rival.

LIGHT INFANTRY won a Group 3 in the mud as a 2-y-o so testing ground won’t be a worry and he’s the one to beat if getting close to the level he showed when narrowly denied in the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville last summer Migration produced a really smart effort to defy top weight in the Lincoln and is second choice ahead of William Knight’s Checkandchallenge.
The bet365 Classic Trial has, over the years, proven to be a happy hunting ground for some of the shining lights in Flat racing. The one mile and two furlong race for three-year-olds is a Group 3 contest that provides the perfect stepping stone for major races later in the season, including the Derby at neighbouring Epsom Downs in June.
Some notable names from the races recent history include Western Hymn, Midterm, Cunco, Alenquer and Westover last year Midterm was a regally bred son of Galileo and Midday, both outstanding Group 1 winners in their own right, and looked a very promising prospect when winning the race in 2016.
Cunco was another notable winner due to his breeding. He was Frankel’s first ever winner as a Sire and carried a huge amount of expectation into his career. His most notable win was the bet365 Classic Trial itself. He would only go on to race once more in the UK before retiring to stud himself
The most successful winner came last year in the form of Westover Trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by Rob Hornby, the son of Frankel had a very good two-year-old career before coming to Sandown Park as a three-yearold in 2022. After winning the bet365 Classic Trial by a small margin, he went on to run a huge race in the Derby at Epsom, finishing third to Desert Crown before going even better in the Irish equivalent and bagging a Classic. His success prompted attempts at both the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes later in the season. His return as a four-year-old this year also saw him finish second in the Dubai Sheema Classic.
We look forward to this year’s renewal, with a select field of five set to go to post. Arrest will seek to follow in the footsteps of both previous son’s of Frankel by winning the 2023 renewal.

Course-winner ARREST impressed as an exciting middle-distance prospect at 2yrs so gets the nod on his seasonal return with more to come from this son of Frankel. Charlie Appleby’s Zetland scorer Flying Honours could emerge as the chiefthreat with better days also ahead of him, although Circle of Fire and Salt Bay are two more interesting sorts who need factoring into a fascinating Group 3.

This looks a hot novice for fillies but the obvious one is INFINITE COSMOS, who’s as short as 10/1 for the Oaks after her highly encouraging second in a Doncaster maiden in the autumn. Queen of Fairies looks another exciting prospect but conceding 6lb to the selection may prove tough. TIMEFORM

Probable S.P’s: 2-1 Maasai Mara (GB), 11-4 Ribal (GB), 3-1 Rathgar (GB), 9-2 Feud (GB)
PLAY SMARTER
This looks well-contested for a small-field event and the marginal vote goes to MAASAI MARA, who opened his account impressively at Kempton on his penultimate run and probably bumped into one there last time. Ribal is a big danger and both Rathgar and Feud are likely to improve on their first go in handicaps.

At Sandown Park Racecourse we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather

The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards.
In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
