SANDOWN PARK WELCOMES YOU

CO KES EVENING

Welcome to Sandown Park for Betfair Imperial Cup Day for an exciting afternoon of jump racing.

We have seven races today including three Premier Handicaps and one Listed race on the card, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Betfair for their generous support of today’s racing. We wish them a thoroughly enjoyable day with us.

Our feature race today is the Betfair Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle over two miles which was first run in 1907. Winners of the Betfair Imperial Cup have gone on to succeed at the Cheltenham Festival, just a few days after, on more than one occasion Examples include Gaspara who won the Listed Juvenile Handicap Hurdle just three days later in 2007 along with Blowing Wind who followed up his Imperial Cup triumph with the 1998 Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham

Our Listed race today, The British Stallion Studs EBF Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race is also one worth watching with a keen eye. Last year’s winner, Luccia is currently favourite for the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next week so it would be no surprise if this year’s renewal produced another potential superstar. Our thanks are also extended to the EBF for supporting our card here today.

Away from today’s racing there is no shortage of food and beverage options. We have a variety of options located in Surrey Hall in the Grandstand as well as concession stands throughout the racecourse for you to enjoy.

Off the track there is roaming music entertainment by the Brass Squad as well as guitarist trio Stingin’ It in the Surrey Hall after racing In addition, we will be showing the Italy vs Wales rugby match on selected screens throughout the venue

After today we have just one more jump fixture left on the calendar for the 2022/23 season - bet365 Jump Finale on Saturday 29 April We recommend purchasing tickets for all our fixtures well in advance through our website www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/sandown Hospitality packages and restaurant bookings are still available but selling out fast.

I hope that you have a fantastic time at Sandown Park today and wish the horses and their connections the very best of luck

SPIRIT D’AUNOU is learning by the run, looking more polished as he made it 2 wins from 3 starts to date at Ludlow in January Very much the type to progress again now handicapping, he gets the nod to continue the good work, possibly at the chief expense of Venetia Williams’ Jikala. Start In Front and Jilaijone complete the shortlist.

PLAY SMARTER

This is a deeper race than the one FLOWING CADENZA landed at Ffos Las last time but she could hardly have been more impressive that day and further improvement may well be forthcoming. There are dangers aplenty, headed by Silver Hallmark, who has proved rather hit-and-miss since his Grade 2 novice success but the handicapper is showing mercy and this stiffer test could be just what he needs. Run To Milan, Mucho Mas and Upton Road are others to consider, along with Make Me A Believer.

Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Iconic Muddle (GB), 11-2 Golden Whisky (IRE), 7-1 Eden du Houx (FR), 8-1 Nocte Volatus (GB), Foxboro (GER), 9-1 Zhiguli (IRE), Keep Wondering (IRE), 10-1 Prevaricate (IRE), 12-1 Belargus (FR)

PLAY SMARTER

ICONIC MUDDLE is pretty low-mileage for a 10-y-o and shaped well returning from a lengthy absence when runner-up at Kempton 2 weeks ago He appeals as being favourably handicapped if he can stand more regular racing and gets the narrow vote, with Golden Whisky and Nocte Volatus, with his sights lowered, just two others to note in what rates a tricky finale

So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.

Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
