CO KES EVENING THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
A warm welcome to Betfair Tingle Creek Day here at Sandown Park.
Today promises to be the highlight of our jumps racing calendar and features two Grade One races the Close Brothers Henry VIII Novices’ Chase and the Betfair Tingle Creek. Both run over two miles, the Betfair Tingle Creek is the marquis event for the jumping elite while the Henry VIII Novice’s Chase showcases future stars
Won in previous years by greats such as Desert Orchid, Kauto Star, Moscow Flyer, Sprinter Sacre and Altior, the Tingle Creek is a fast and furious trip over two miles which tests the speed and accuracy of a horse’s jumping. To mark 10 years since his iconic victory in the race, the legendary Sprinter Sacre returns to Sandown Park today. This nine-times Grade 1 winning champion will lead the runners into the Parade Ring ahead of the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase, accompanied by Vicki Roberts, who cares for him in his retirement.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to all those sponsors supporting today’s racing including Betfair, Goffs, Pertemps, Close Brothers and House of Cavani A special mention for the family and friends of Brian Giles, former Racing Editor for the Daily Mail, who have generously supported the first race in his memory We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day here with us
Off the track there is music entertainment by the Brass Squad while you light up your selfie game with Christmas-themed LED displays from the Petal People throughout the day. Continue your raceday experience into the evening with the City Oompah Band providing classic anthems with a Bavarian twist in the Esher Hall and the Cobham Band delivering festive cheer with Christmas carols in the Surrey Hall from 4pm onwards.
In addition, throughout the afternoon we will be showing the live action from Aintree’s iconic Becher Chase Day, whilst selected screens will be showing the World Cup football match from 3.00pm Please do join us after racing, as we are also delighted to welcome Goffs UK who are presenting a unique experience with a point-to-point horse sale in the Winners Enclosure This is the first time this has taken place at Sandown Park and promises to be a real spectacle.
Sandown Park is always striving for opportunities to support our local communities and so for the second year in a row, we are proud to present our Gifting Programme in conjunction with Christ Church and the Lower Green Community Centre You are invited to drop off gifts such as toys, games and clothing for lower-income families and children at our donation boxes located in the ticket collection foyer on entry. If you have gifts you would like to donate at a later point, our collection point will be open until 5pm on Friday 9th December
Thank you for joining us for Betfair Tingle Creek Day, we wish all our racegoers and connections a wonderful day and the very best of luck.

Gary Moore’s AUTHORISED SPEED was highly promising in bumpers and looked a most exciting prospect when making a winning hurdling debut at Lingfield so is taken to make light of his 5lb penatly here before making his mark in graded company. Nicky Henderson has a fine record in this contest so his newcomer Immortal rates the chief threat. William of York and Godot can fight it out for minor honours.

After getting off the mark at Warwick on his previous start, Edwardstone arrived in fine form for the Alan King team.
Tom Cannon was happy for Harry Skelton and Third Time Lucki to get on with things out in front and he positioned Edwardstone in behind the leader
Third Time Lucki made sure they went an honest pace but his early exertions and over exuberance at his fences soon bought him back into the grasp of Edwardstone. He cruised into the lead coming into the turn and quickly put the race to bed once Tom asked for his effort. It was a fine effort in what would turn into a memorable season.

JONBON
A full brother to the impeccable Douvan, whose reputation has rather preceded him throughout his career He hasn’t disappointed however, with the only defeat of his career coming to a certain Constitution Hill. Looked an outstanding chasing prospect when taking the notable scalps of Monmiral and West Cork at Warwick last month and he’s very much the one to beat.
HHHHH
BOOTHILL
Talented handicap hurdler who’s giving the signs that he could be significantly better as a chaser, impressing when winning his two starts to date over fences. This is a significant step up in class but he’s jumped and travelled particularly well so far and could rate as the biggest threat to the favourite.
HHHH
UNEXPECTED PARTY
Lightly-raced for his age but showed plenty of ability over hurdles last term, looking useful when winning a competitive handicap at Ascot in January. He made a good start to his chasing career when second behind the smart-looking McFabulous at Exeter last month and he ought to have learned plenty from that run.

high-class renewal of the Betfair Tingle Creek saw Irish raider Chacun Pour Soi line up for Willie Mullins against some top British opponents that included Nube Negra and eventual winner Greaneteen.
Nicholls was also represented by Hitman but it was all about the Chris Giles owned Greaneteen, who looks set to return this year to defend his crown. He was given a patient ride by Bryony Frost but jumped himself into contention and rounding the final bend he showed an excellent turn off foot to pull away from his rivals and give Paul Nicholls a fourth win in 10 years.

GREANETEEN
The reigning champion, who arrives here on the back of a stunning victory in last month’s Grade Two Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter Paul Nicholls has reported his preparation to have gone much more smoothly this time around and considering he’s won each of his last three starts at Sandown Park all in Grade One company he rates as the one to beat.

EDWARDSTONE
The outstanding novice from last season, who dazzled when winning the Grade One Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival. He suffered defeat on his final outing at the Grand National Festival at Aintree, but that came on the back of a long season and he’s a serious player considering how impressive he was when winning the Grade One Henry VIII Chase on this card 12 months ago

One of the shining novices’ in the 2020-21 season, who looked to be the champion in waiting before suffering a shock defeat in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Tingle Creek had been a top steeplechaser in America prior to joining [trainer] Tom Jones in 1972 I rode him almost every day at home but I never schooled him over a fence. Tom said of schooling him, "He knows more about jumping than you'll ever know." I know what he meant He was a nightmare but he knew everything So when I rode him for the first time in a race, finishing fourth in the Benson and Hedges Chase at Sandown Park in November 1975, it was the first time I'd jumped anything with him.
He used to get wound up anyway but Tom would deliberately wind him up the day before a race so that he would get to the races and just bolt The only choice you had with Tingle Creek was which direction you went in; you didn't have an awful lot of choice about the speed
He didn't really jump the fences as other horses did. He'd gallop over them, literally run over the top of them He was extremely clever and could fiddle a fence if he needed to But when he stood off, he stood off miles He was something else.
People forget just how great a horse he was. Nothing could touch him on good or firm ground He was unbeatable and ran like an out-of-control car.
The following extracts are from 'The Going Up was worth the Coming Down,' the autobiography of jockey Ian Watkinson, who rode more winners on Tingle Creek than any other.
Ian Watkinson will be signing copies of 'The Going Up was worth the Coming Down' in the Surrey Hall today.

STRONG LEADER was impressive in bumpers and wasn’t hard pressed to make a successful start over hurdles at Uttoxeter recently With big improvement on the cards, he’s taken to defy a penalty at the likely expense of Etalon, who made a positive start in this sphere in a novice at Warwick. BROADWAY BOY lacks the relative experience of a few, but he’s made a solid start,
twice finding only one
too good in maiden/novice company, and making a quick
to handicaps from what rates an appealing mark. He gets the nod with the step up to
another likely plus.
There’s strength in opposition though, dangers headed up by fellow improving pair Fenland Tiger and Brandy McQueen.

Ready preference is for DIXON COVE, who looked a filly of real potential when coasting home on debut for Paul Nicholls at Hereford and she’s already proven at a higher level having been third in a French Grade 3 during the spring. Old Victoria, another import from the other side of the Channel, can be expected to leave her Down Royal run well behind and she is second choice. GESSKILLE took really well to these fences when narrowly denied in the Grand Sefton and is taken to go one better now stepping back up in trip The Dan Skelton stable has notched big chase wins on the last 2 weekends and Ashtown Lad heads the dangers on the back of a solid reappearance run over hurdles. Dr Kananga, another who should be sharper for a recent spin over hurdles, likely has more to offer over fences and is also on the shortlist along with last year’s runner-up Hill Sixteen.

The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
