AFTERNOON RACING THURSDAY 21ST JULY 2022 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME £3.00
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOME TO WELCOMES YOUEVENING CORAL HERON STAKES Welcome to Sandown Park for an afternoon of summer racing, featuring seven races. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for this afternoon, James Lindon-Travers, European Breeders Fund and Guild of the 19 Lubricators for their generous support. The feature race this afternoon is the The European Bloodstock News EBF Star Stakes. This race is for two year old fillies and has been a springboard to success in previous years, including in 2021 when won by Inspiral who has gone on to be a dual Group One winner. Looking ahead, we have two more music nights to look forward to at Sandown Park with Nile Rodgers & Chic live after racing on Wednesday 27th July and Simply Red on Thursday 4th August. Tickets for these fixtures are on sale through the Sandown Park website. I hope that you have a fantastic time with us at Sandown Park and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck. Sarah Drabwell General Manager of Sandown Park Racecourse

PLAY SMARTER
The eyes are immediately drawn to unexposed handicap debutant ACRION, who looked promising when scoring twice over 6f on the all-weather earlier this year. He hasn’t been treated too kindly by the draw, but this stiff 5f could be just the ticket now switched to turf and his opening mark could turn out to be a pretty lenient one. Saaheq will be a threat if able to build on his latest success and he is feared most ahead of Han Solo Berger.

THE MARTIN DENSHAM MEMORIAL EBF MAIDEN STAKES
Martin Densham was a most popular fixture at Sandown Park for more than 30 years. His father, Pat, founded the family Bookmakers firm of SUNDERLANDS in the mid-1940s and the name continues to be represented on the racecourses to this day. Martin joined the family business in about 1977 and was responsible for the long lasting and popular Sunderland Bonus attached to the winner of the Imperial Cup run at Sandown Park in March of each year, if that horse could win any race at the Cheltenham Festival the following week. This initiative adds significant interest and betting activity to the historic Imperial Cup and has been paid out three times during its history and is now a huge £100,000 supported by its current sponsor. Martin embraced a distinctive style operating from the senior pitch ‘on the Rails’ at most racecourses. He was a larger than life character much loved by his clients and was a very generous host when entertaining clients who became firm and loyal friends. Prior to becoming an old fashioned credit clients’ and racecourse bookmaker, Martin had a versatile and varied career from briefly being a male model while living in Australia, through to living in Bordeaux when he had entered the wine trade, an activity he much enjoyed, and then, finally, the gregarious and ever popular bookmaker who added colour and conviviality to the horse racing and sports betting scene. Martin, for over 30 years, had been a leading member of the Charity Guild of the Nineteen Lubricators which had been formed in the late 1930s by members of the oil industry. The winning connections of the Martin Densham Memorial race will receive a perpetual trophy commissioned by the Guild of the Nineteen Lubricators of a solid silver sculpture of a Sunderland Flying Boat, an aircraft flown by Pat Densham during the Second World War, and the inspiration for the business name of Sunderlands Bookmakers.

TODAY’S HEADLINES RACING REVIEW
CHURCHILL COLT VADENI ECLIPSES RIVALS
Vadeni (Churchill) came from last to first under Christophe Soumillon to land the Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes, providing his owner His Highness the Aga Khan with his first Gr.1 winner in the UK since Harzand won the Derby in 2016. He was also justifying his connections’ decision to supplement him for this race at a cost of £50,000. Dropped out last in the early stages, Soumillon was in no rush with the Jean-Claud Rouget-trained colt as, when his rivals began making moves inside him approaching the two-furlong marker, he pulled his mount out wide, coming with a safer run on the outside. Once in the clear, he ran on strongly to edge to the front, holding the late challenge of the unlucky-in-running Mishriff (Make Believe) by a neck, with Native Trail (Oasis Dream) a head further back in third. Rouget said afterwards: “He was very relaxed in the first part of the race. I was a little bit anxious at the beginning of the straight, as he looked not very well [placed], but with his turn of foot he won
The Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Vadeni (Churchill) holds off the running-on Mishriff (Make Believe) to win yesterday’s Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, becoming the first French-trained winner of the race since Javelot in 1962 and the first for the current Aga Khan. © Shamela Hanley

FAIRY CROSS had loads to spare when off the mark at Newmarket last time and the runner-up has boosted the form since, so she makes plenty of appeal up in grade. Tagline is a bit more exposed but does set the standard on form, so she’s respected, while Dance In The Grass’ claims can’t be ignored following an impressive winning debut over C&D.

PLAY SMARTER
SAIGON is a lightly-raced sort who still looks on a good mark following a 2lb rise for his Salisbury win, so he’s fancied to go in again. Scarlet Dragon hasn’t won for a long time but shaped well in a falsely-run affair at Windsor last time and is able to run off the same mark in first-time cheekpieces.
