WELCOME TO bet365 JUMP FINALE DAY

Welcome to Sandown Park for our bet365 Jump Finale, the last day of the 2021/22 Jump Season. It was on 24th April 1875 that Sandown Park first opened its gates, so as we approach our 150th birthday, we are proud to still be welcoming guests to this, our original fixture, bet365 Gold Cup Day. We would like to thank bet365 for its generous and long-standing sponsorship of this raceday, which began over 15 years ago. We have seven superb races to savour, including the Grade One bet365 Celebration Chase, the Grade Two bet365 Oaksey Chase and our feature race, the Grade Three bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase. The bet365 Gold Cup has a long and storied history, with some of the greatest horses in the sport featuring on its roll of honour. Preceding the enthralling action on track, we are delighted to be crowning the Champion Jockey, Champion Trainer, Champion Owner and Champion Conditional for the Jump season. Please make sure to join us around the Parade Ring at 12.45 as we celebrate those that have been successful this season. We would like to extend our congratulations to Brian Hughes, who will be crowned Champion Jockey for the second time this afternoon, having become only the fourth ever Jump jockey to achieved 200 winners in a season. The Champion Owner trophy will be going to JP McManus for a remarkable 15th time, having amassed well in excess of £2.5million in prize money. Paul Nicholls will be collecting his 13th Champion Trainer prize, having won over £2.6million in prize money this season, with big wins including the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase here in December. This year’s Champion Conditional title goes to Kevin Brogan, who will be lifting the trophy for the first time after a wonderful season. Presenting the Champion Conditional trophy will be recently retired amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen. Sam called time on his riding career earlier this month after winning the Randox Grand National on Noble Yeats, crowning an outstanding 23 years in the saddle. Sam also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, two King George VI Chases and the bet365 Gold Cup here at Sandown Park. We are also celebrating some of the horses who have achieved great things this season, with an equine parade before the Championship presentations. I hope that you have a fantastic time with us at Sandown Park and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck. Sarah Drabwell General Manager of Sandown Park Racecourse

PARADE OF CHAMPIONS The Parade of Champions pays tribute to the equine stars of the past and present, with today’s line-up having won countless Graded contests between them. Join us at the Parade Ring to pay tribute to these horses and salute their achievements on the racecourse. The following horses will partake in today’s Parade of Champions, which starts at 12.20pm.

CONSTITUTION HILL A real Sandown Park specialist. Constitution Hill won twice at Sandown Park before going onto win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. We first got to see Constitution Hill under rules at Sandown Park back in December where he dispatched the promising novice Might I in fantastic style. The Tolworth Hurdle awaited him, and he was sent off the warm 2/5 favourite. The ground was very testing that day, but Constitution Hill went through it like it was nothing and won by an emphatic 12 lengths. He’s certainly one to look forward to next season.

KNIGHT SALUTE Milton Harris has seen a real resurgence this season and that is in no small part down to this superstar. Bought over from Andrew Balding, Knight Salute took to hurdling like a duck to water and quickly made it five from five. Paddy Brennan has built up a fantastic relationship over the season and despite finishing down the field at Cheltenham, he won Grade One glory at Aintree. In what was a cracking finish with Pied Piper.

EDWARDSTONE It’s great to see Alan King with another brilliant racehorse. Edwardstone had a couple of tries over fences back in 2020, where things didn’t go to plan. However, this season he is a reformed character and could do no wrong over fences. He has won five races this season, including four Graded races and will be one to look forward to next season in open company.

L’HOMME PRESSE L’Homme Presse has been another to improve through the ranks at a frightening pace. He began with a win in a Class Three at Exeter back in December and ended the season winning the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham. Along the way he was a mightily impressive winner in the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase, and it will be great to see him back at the track today.

SIRE DE GRUGY Sire Du Grugy is a bit of a legend at Sandown Park and needs no introduction. The Gary Moore trained gelding has won four times at the track, including an unbelievable two Tingle Creek’s and one Celebration Chase. He wore his heart on his sleeve and we can’t wait to see him back here today.

SANDOWN PARK AWARDS

In March 2001, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother unveiled the life-size bronze of SPECIAL CARGO which stands overlooking the Winner’s Enclosure. The bronze was commissioned, from Caroline Wallace, by a group of Patron Sponsors, including Sandown Park, in recognition of the Queen Mother’s support and commitment to Jump Racing. SPECIAL CARGO had won the Grand Military Gold Cup on three occasions, and in 1984 won what was then known as the Whitbread Gold Cup and now run as the bet365 Gold Cup. His last-gasp victory, from what appeared to be a hopeless position, was considered to be one of the best races ever run. When bet365 Gold Cup Saturday was officially recognised as the bet365 Jump Finale, Sandown Park presented bronze heads of SPECIAL CARGO, known as “Specials” to the season’s champions including trainer, owner and jockey. In 2010, the racecourse asked Caroline Wallace to produce a maquette of the life-size bronze for presentation by Sandown Park on bet365 Jump Finale in recognition of and to someone who, it was felt, had made a significant contribution to the racing industry. This perpetual trophy’s first recipient was Jonjo O’Neill and the subsequent years have a distinguished Roll of Honour: 2011: Trevor Hemmings 2012: Big Buck’s 2013: David Johnson 2014: Gary Moore 2015: A. P. McCoy 2016: Nicky Henderson 2017: Sprinter Sacre 2018: Cue Card 2019: Noel Fehily 2020: Meeting not held 2021: Richard Johnson The trophy will, once again, be presented this afternoon. The “Special” stands on a replica of the racecourse, showing the famous uphill Sandown Park finish, which has seen so many exciting finishes in its history.

RACING POST HOST THEIR ANNUAL JUMPS HORSE OF THE YEAR AND THIS YEAR WE’VE HAD SOME REAL STARS, SO LETS TAKE A LOOK AT THE CONTENDERS... L’HOMME PRESSE If one horse encapsulates Venetia Williams’ fine season, it is surely L’Homme Presse. A relentless galloper, he has proved an improving chaser this season, graduating from a handicap win at Exeter to Grade 1 honours at Sandown Park and Cheltenham. He stamped his authority on a competitive race at Ascot to really mark him as a novice to follow, before wins in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham and Grade 1 success in the Scilly Isles at Sandown Park put him firmly in the frame for Cheltenham Festival success. He duly obliged in one of the performances of the week.

HONEYSUCKLE Very few horses have the class and resolve of Honeysuckle. Henry de Bromhead’s stable star made it backto-back wins in the Champion Hurdle when seeing off subsequent Aintree Hurdle winner Epatante to extend her unbeaten winning thread to 15. Often underappreciated, she has the class few Champion Hurdler’s possess, and her Cheltenham achievements will live on and mark her as a once in a generation mare.

CONSITUTION HILL The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is never won in record time by 22 lengths. That statement would have been true until around 13:35 on the 15th of March 2022, until a certain Constitution Hill. A winner of his two previous starts at Sandown Park, he was commanding in victory in the Festival opener this season, dominating a classy field and running out one of the most impressive winners ever seen in the Supreme. The Champion Hurdle beckons in 2023.

A PLUS TARD The red, white and blue of Cheveley Park Stud were carried to further success at the Cheltenham Festival with the perfect performance of A Plus Tard in the Gold Cup. The old adage that the best horse always wins the Gold Cup was proved firmly correct this season, with Rachael Blackmore guiding the Henry de Bromhead-trained eight-year-old to a wide margin success in the Festival showpiece. With time on his side still, the world really is his oyster when it comes to future success.

EDWARDSTONE If there has ever been an advertisement for giving novices plenty of experience, then Edwardstone is it. Edwardstone began his season with an unfortunate tumble at Warwick before returning there to break his duck before running away with the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown Park on only his third chase run. Backto-back Grade 2 wins at Kempton and Warwick set up a perfect tilt at the Arkle at the Festival and he was dominant in victory again, seeing off some smart types in what was a perfect jumping performance.

EPATANTE JP McManus’ eight-year-old mare added to her 2020 Champion Hurdle win with a sublime performance in the Aintree Hurdle a few weeks ago, blowing the field away under Aidan Coleman. A mare who has had her issues, she put it all together on the big stage to win by 14 lengths and add to her Grade 1 tally for the season – supplementing the wins in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle where she shared the honours with Not So Sleepy in a dead heat, and her cosy success in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Congratulations Congratulations to to Kevin Kevin Brogan Brogan on on winning winning the the Conditional Conditional Jockeys’ Jockeys’ Championship Championship from from all all at at Biowave Biowave

CHAMPION APPRENTICE JOCKEY

KEVIN BROGAN PROFILE: Kevin Brogan hails from County Kildare and has really made a name from himself over the past two seasons. This season has been exceptional and he more than deserves to be crowned champion.

TOTAL PRIZE MONEY

£397,879

£232,533 FROM WINS

Kevin Brogan’s biggest win of the season came aboard the Harry Fry trained Phoenix Way. He took home the winnings at Ascot in the bet365 Handicap Chase over two miles five furlongs. He rode him again at Kempton and despite being well backed he didn’t make it passed the third fence after a heavy fall, thankfully both were fine.

His improvement is illustrated by the table above, 100 winners may not be off the cards next season.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEASON Kevin Brogan rode the veteran chaser Cobolobo at Ascot in February. The tenyear-old gave him a great spin round but unfortunately the pair could only manage sixth. He ran well for a long way, and they may be reunited next season.

Your Darling has been a bit of a hard luck story this season but each time the young jockey has given him an excellent ride. The closest the pair came to victory was at Kempton where he was just touched off by Jacamar in a close finish.

Clan Des Obeaux put in an unbelievable performance at Aintree to win comfortably under Harry Cobden. The 2021 winner of the Bowl Chase had been a little unlucky all season, but Nicholls has done an excellent job of getting him back to his brilliant best to win the race again. The first-time blinkers were a master stroke from the Champion trainer.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEASON Bravemansgame has matured into a truly brilliant jumper and has done all those at Ditcheat proud throughout the course of the season. He was found to have Ulcers at the end of the season and will be back next year to hopefully win more Graded races. Greaneteen continued Nicholls’ fine form in the Tingle Creek. He has now won the race three times in the last five years and Greaneteen was another excellent winner. Ridden by Bryony Frost, the pair defeated Nube Negra and Chacun Pour Soi.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 CELEBRATION CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION The highest class race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb although fillies and mares do receive a 7lb allowance.

THE bet365 GOLD CUP HISTORY & HIGHLIGHTS

As we reach the end of our National Hunt season, Sandown Park hosts its annual end of season two-day card. An excellent card is headlined by the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase, run over three miles and five furlongs for five-year-olds or older. 1957 saw the inaugural race taken by Much Obliged and jockey Johnny East. Back then the race was known as the Whitbread Gold Cup, due to it being sponsored by Whitbread Brewers. Talking of great horses, none other than Arkle 'himself' won the race in 1965 carrying a record 12st 7lb - another tremendous achievement for arguably the greatest racehorse to ever step foot on a racecourse.

Arkle soars over the last ahead of Mill House in the 1965 renewal. The race’s most successful trainer, Fulke Walwyn, registered his second victory in the race with Mill House two years later. It was to be his last major win after being plagued by a series of back injuries, which ultimately stopped him the following year, instead the race was won by Larbawn. 1984 served up one of the most memorable finishes, which epitomized what horse racing is all about. Diamond Edge was returning to the race to try and be the first to make to make it a hat-trick of wins in the race and looked to have things sewn up 100 yards out, until Special Cargo and Kevin Mooney came from the clouds to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Special Cargo

It was four years later that another racing great took home the spoils. Four King Georges, amongst numerous other unbelievable achievements, underpinned the great Desert Orchid's career and he was a horse who was loved and adored by many. His win in the race in 1988 saw a brilliant ride by jockey Simon Sherwood, who was merely playing with his rivals coming to the last and when it looked like it might be a tight finish.

Desert Orchid In more recent history, Topsham Bay and Ad Hoc became the next two horses to win the race twice in the 1990s and early 2000s, joining the likes of Larbawn and Diamond Edge. Ruby Walsh rode Ad Hoc to victory on both occasions for trainer Paul Nicholls who has also won the race in 2012 and 2015 courtesy of Tidal Bay and Just A Par, making him the trainer to fear in modern times. In 2008, our partners bet365 took over as regular sponsor of the race and Monkerhostin was the inaugural bet365 Gold Cup winner for Philip Hobbs and the recently retired riding great, Richard Johnson. There have been plenty of brilliant contests in the bet365 Gold Cup since, but perhaps Sean and Peter Bowen's family success in 2017, where Henllan Harri defied monster odds of 40/1 to win by the narrowest of heads to Vyta Du Roc was the most thrilling of all the renewals in the last decade.

Controversy in last year's race saw Potterman awarded first place After we sadly missed the contest in 2020, it was fantastic to see a new name engraved on the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase trophy last year. Potterman took home the spoils for Alan King and Tom Cannon. King won the race in 2019, so he'll be looking to make it a hattrick with Potterman returning to defend his crown.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 GOLD CUP HANDICAP CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION

This historic event is a handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards run over three miles, four and a half furlongs. Unlike most other handicaps there are no ratings restriction here, so some classy performers may be tempted to take part in a race that has a rich history. However, the same principle of handicapping exists, so a horse officially rated 149, such as last year’s winner Potterman, carries 9lb more than the likes of Domaine De Lisle and Fidux, both rated 140.

POTTERMAN This race was decided in the stewards’ room after Enrilo was adjudged to have hung across the track and was thus demoted to third. The race looked like it was then going to go to Kitty’s Light but he was just pipped to second place by the eventual winner Potterman. Alan King is making a bit of a name for himself in this race after winning it in 2019 with Talkischeap. Enrilo and Kitty’s Light both return along with Potterman, so we could be in for another thriller.

PLAY SMARTER

ENRILO travelled much like the best horse when first past the post in this last year off 1lb lower but was subsequently disqualified for hanging into the fast-finishing Kitty’s Light, which handed the race to the untroubled Potterman. There shouldn’t be much to choose between them again with all 3 arriving at the top of their game, but Enrilo is better off at the weights so is taken to make amends. Win My Wings is another obvious contender after her romp in the Scottish National 3 weeks ago.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 SELECT HURDLE RACE DESCRIPTION

Another high-class Grade 2 contest on today’s card, this time a two mile, five and a half furlong hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. This race, again much like the other Graded contests today, has the weights allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 2 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success.

GRADE 2

RUN OVER TWO MILES, FIVE FURLONGS AND 110 YARDS

YOUNEVERCALL Younevercall was rated only 1lb lower than his 2019 victory but is more than a fair performer on his day. David Bass again got a brilliant tune out of the tenyear-old and despite drifting right kept on well. Indefatigable had been far from disgraced in Grade One company on her last two starts and gave it a real go after what had been a long season. She was just held by the eventual winner in what was an excellent spectacle.

Tough to split this quartet but tentative preference is for SCARAMANGA. Paul Nicholls’ charge was an improved model over timber last spring, and having taken the final race on this corresponding card last season, he’s taken to pick up where he left off in this sphere. There were more positive signs for stablemate Mcfabulous at Aintree earlier this month so he shades the vote for second over Indefatigable.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEASON Jonbon was a little unlucky to bump into stablemate Constitution Hill at Cheltenham, but he got his career back on track with a Grade One win at Aintree. He’d already won three times this season and will make into a gorgeous chaser. Epatante rounded off what has been a brilliant season, when winning the Aintree Hurdle a few weeks ago. Aidan Coleman has got a real tune out of her since Barry Geraghty’s retirement, and they’ll be looking for more success next season.

BRIEF AMBITION maintained his 100% record over fences when comfortably seeing off Muckamore (successful since) at Ludlow in March and, with further improvement on the cards, he’s a solid choice to go in again. Flic Ou Voyou and Beakstown could emerge as the main dangers.

A 3lb rise for FIFTY BALL’s latest Ascot win still leaves him on a lower mark than when second in last year’s Betfair Hurdle at Newbury and he looks sure to make a bold bid in this season’s finale. Samarrive’s last 2 runs have been underwhelming but they were in top-end handicaps and he could easily get back on tracked returned to calmer waters and upped to a trip which promises to suit. Nicky Henderson’s good record in this also earns Glynn a place on the shortlist.
