WELCOME TO
bet365 CLASSIC TRIAL DAY Welcome to Sandown Park for the opening day of our 2022 Flat Season, bet365 Classic Trial Day. Today is the first of two days of racing at Sandown Park that can be traced back to our inaugural meeting on the 24th April 1875. I always enjoy that for a fixture so grounded in history, you will almost inevitably see a star of tomorrow. We would like to take this opportunity to thank bet365 for its continued, generous sponsorship of today's racing, including the Group Three bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes, the Group Two bet365 Mile and the Group Three bet365 Classic Trial. We are extremely grateful to bet365 for its support of this meeting, having been involved for over 15 years. The bet365 Classic Trial is a leading trial for the Cazoo Derby, held at our sister course Epsom Downs in June. Two past winners to have gone on to succeed in the World's Greatest Flat Race are Shergar and Shahrastani, while more recently, Adayar was runner up in the 2021 renewal before heading to Epsom Downs where he was triumphant by more than four lengths. The bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes, named in memory of the great jockey Sir Gordon Richards, who was Champion Flat Jockey 26 times throughout his career, is a Group Three run over just shy of one mile and two furlongs. It is often a starting point of the season for some of the leading middle distance horses, with previous winners including Crystal Ocean, Al Kazeem and Brigadier Gerard. The bet365 Mile is often the first chance to see some top class milers in action as they bid to get their seasons off to a winning start. Won in previous years by Hurricane Alan and Paco Boy, the 2021 renewal was lit up by one of the best milers of recent times, when Palace Pier was victorious for jockey Frankie Dettori. With such a fantastic afternoon of racing in store, I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Sandown Park and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck. BLUE TRAIL was a touch disappointing last time but he looks fairly treated on the pick of his AW efforts and might be worth another chance with the Charlie Appleby team in such good form. Al Marmar has made a promising start and is feared most for the Andrew Balding team. Wanees should have more to come on the back of his two 7f novice wins last September and is also on the shortlist.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 GORDON RICHARDS STAKES RACE DESCRIPTION The bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes is run over a mile and a quarter and is for horses aged four years old and above. This is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.

WALDKONIG Waldkonig made heavy work of things but eventually ground out the result to win by just under two-lengths. Frankie Dettori kept it simple and set more than steady fractions, in turn stacking up his rivals. Coming down the home straight there were challengers all over the track but once Frankie got into the driving seat he began to draw away. Desert Encounter stayed on best of all and his effort could be marked up as he was the only one to get into it from the rear.

CAREER IN FOCUS
PALACE PIER PROFILE
Few horses have achieved as much in a short space of time as Palace Pier. An outstanding miler at three and four-years-old, the son of Kingman raced in the colours of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and was expertly trained by John and Thady Gosden.
CAREER He faced a tough test in Champion Juvenile Pinatubo and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Wichita, who had just been touched off a neck by Kameko in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas. Held up under Frankie Dettori, he made smooth headway on the outside of the field and travelled into contention a furlong out, needing only to be ridden out to win cosily and see off Pinatubo by a length. In the Prix Jacques le Marois he faced the top-class filly Alpine Star and Queen Anne Stakes winner Circus Maximus. Nevertheless, Palace Pier notched up his second Group 1 win, giving weight to Alpine Star and beating her by just under a length, with five lengths back to Circus Maximus. Sandown Park and the Group 2 bet365 Mile is where Palace Pier opened his four-year-old campaign. He showed that he retained all his ability, and had likely even found improvement, to win by eight lengths and set up a tilt at the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. He was again dominant, winning easily by a length and a half.
It proved to be a titanic battle at Deauville in the Prix Jacques le Marois but Palace Pier defended his crown by a neck, coming out on top in one of the races of the season.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 MILE RACE DESCRIPTION This one mile race for four-year-olds and older is a Group 2 contest and will attract some of the best milers around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty and any winner of a Group 1 contest is given a 5lb penalty to shoulder. RUN OVER ONE MILE
PALACE PIER John & Thady Gosden had quite the day last year and made it back-to-back wins. Palace Pier was another short-priced favourite and on paper it looked a bit of a penalty kick for the son of Kingman. His closest rival in the betting Khuzaam took them along but once shaken up failed to find anything and slipped back through the field. It ended up becoming a rout as Palace Pier quickly put lengths between him and the field to win by an eventual eight lengths.

BET365 CLASSIC TRIAL REVIEW LAST YEAR’S RACE GAVE US THREE SUPERSTARS The winner, Alenquer, may have been a big price for his Sandown Park success but proved a horse of the highest nature. He won the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot on his next start before put in a string of good efforts in the Grand Prix de Paris, the Juddmonte International and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on his next three runs, finishing third, second and ninth respectively.
Third-placed Yibir was highly tried in the Chester Vase and the Cocked Hat Stakes on his next two starts before a gelding operation really saw him turn a corner. He was a fine winner of the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket’s July meeting on his next run afterwards, before landing the Great Voltiguer at York two starts later.
However, despite all the success to have come from the 2021 bet365 Classic Trial, the standout is undoubtably Adayar. Godolphin’s son of Frankel improved from a second in the Derby Trial at Lingfield to win impressively at Epsom, given a masterful ride by Adam Kirby. The pair took up the running in the Classic two furlongs from the finish, quickly extending clear and keeping on strongly to win by over four lengths from Mojo Star. He proved that was no fluke when running out a clear winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in late July.

FACTS & STATS THE bet365 CLASSIC TRIAL RACE DESCRIPTION This one mile and two furlong race for three-year-olds is another Group 3 contest – this time a chance for the Classic generation to strut their stuff. It takes a high-class three-year-old to win a race like this and it is designed to be a stepping stone to Classic success later on in the season. Initially, the weights are allocated as 9st 1lb for colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses which have won at a higher level already – 3lb for a Group 2 or 5lb to those successful in a Group 1. PREVIOUS

ALENQUER As far as Classic Trials go, this has to be one of the best in recent years. Tom Marquand decided to keep it simple on Alenquer and took him to the front early on. He showed signs of greenness in the home straight and began to wander a bit in the final furlong. Adayar did his best to close him all the way to the line, but the winning post came in time for Alenquer, to give William Haggas a great winner on the day.

As you would expect from a Classic Trial, all bar Groundbreaker hold a Derby entry, with River Thames feared most.

An interesting novice that looks sure to throw up future winners. OBLONG SONG posted an excellent second at Nottingham when last seen and seems sure to carry on progressing now her stamina is drawn out further, so she receives the vote. Darmoiselle very much catches the eye on paper for the Gosden team and strong market support would have to be taken seriously. Stablemate Emily Upjohn impressed on her debut at Wolverhampton and is seemingly the choice of Dettori.

PLAY SMARTER
A tricky finale to unravel despite the small field but preference is for AL QAREEM, who looked well suited by the step up in trip when making a winning start on the turf at Nottingham earlier this month. He still looks a shade rough around the edges and ought to have a bit more to offer. The unbeaten Giavellotto is by no means the finished article either so Marco Botti’s charge heads up the dangers, ahead of Monet’s Sunrise.
