Sandown Park Racecard - Saturday 12th March

WELCOME TO

PADDY POWER IMPERIAL CUP DAY Welcome to Sandown Park today for Paddy Power Imperial Cup Day, a terrific day of racing featuring seven high-class races. We would like to thank Paddy Power for their support of today's card, which includes the feature Grade Three Paddy Power Imperial Cup. This race was first run in 1907 and is always fiercely contested. As an interesting piece of trivia, the amateur jockey riding 1977 winner Acquaint was Nicky Henderson, who is now best known as one of the country's leading Jumps trainers. The increased value of this year's race to £100,000 is part of The Jockey Club's commitment to investing in prize money levels across its portfolio. Another highlight on track is the Grade Three European Breeders’ Fund Paddy Power ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final, which was claimed in 2007 by the hugely popular dual Ryanair Chase winner Albertas Run. Our two Listed races are the Paddy Power Novices' Handicap Chase – which was previously held at the Cheltenham Festival – and the British Stallion Studs EBF Mares' Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race. Our thanks go to the European Breeders' Fund for their ongoing support of British racing. We will be showing both international rugby games from the Six Nations Championship in the Surrey Hall, inside the main grandstand. Our Diamond Edge bar will remain open after racing for the duration of the England vs. Ireland match. Please consider wearing a face covering in indoor and enclosed spaces. QR codes remain located around the racecourse to enable you to check in using the NHS COVID-19 app, should you wish to. I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck and hope that you all have a fantastic time with us here at Sandown Park. Sarah Drabwell General Manager of Sandown Park Racecourse

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty are in with a shout in an ultra competitive Imperial Cup. Dan Skelton landed this event 12 months ago and his LUCKY ONE signalled he’s ready to strike when third at Ascot last time so can capitalise on a much-reduced mark. Balco Coastal arrives on the up and is feared most on his handicap debut, although a case can also be made for Onemorefortheroad, Hystery Bere and Grisbi de Berce.

Fourth Race

PLAY SMARTER

LUCCIA took a while to hit full stride at Warwick first time out but she was really pouring it on at the finish, so Nicky Henderson’s 4yo gets the marginal vote ahead of the unbeaten (under Rules) Mullenbeg, who boasts obvious claims. The authoritative debut of Eabha Grace can’t be forgotten despite a poor showing since, so she’s another one to consider.

POWERSTOWN PARK has much improved since upped to this sort of trip, winning 2 of his last 3 starts, and the manner of his win at Hereford 6 weeks ago suggests a 6lb rise isn’t insurmountable. PLAY SMARTER

NOCTE VOLATUS continues to go from strength-to-strength over fences, adding a third success to his tally with the minimum of fuss at Huntingdon 6 days ago, and he may well be difficult to contain under a penalty with the prospect of more to come. Foxboro is enjoying a good, if frustrating, campaign and is respected also, along with Mahler’s Promise, who twice ran well here late last year.
