GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP DAY TUESDAY 8 MARCH 2022 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME £3.00
WELCOME TO
THE 157TH GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP A very warm welcome to Sandown Park for the 157th Grand Military Gold Cup Meeting The Grand Military Gold Cup was first run 181 years ago and it is still the most important and sought-after trophy that service men and women, from all three services and all ranks who ride, want to win. We are very grateful to The Army Sport Control Board for its sponsorship of today’s meeting and it is a great pleasure to welcome them to Sandown Park. We are also very grateful to Team Forces (previously Team Ethos) who sponsor the training of our serving UK Armed Forces’ jockeys. This programme has attracted a record number of potential jockeys this year and we are delighted that some will make their debut today. We are also pleased to welcome a party of service personnel from The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall, Loughborough, at the invitation of Sandown Park. The party includes service personnel recuperating from injuries and conditions sustained whilst serving our country. Most importantly, we remain greatly honoured and privileged by the patronage of Her Majesty The Queen, who so generously became our Patron after the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The Queen Mother, who won the Gold Cup a record five times, always said that the Grand Military Meeting at Sandown Park was one of her favourite race meetings. I am sure that I speak for all of you in wishing Her Majesty well in her Platinum Jubilee year noting that this year is the equally important twentieth anniversary of Her Majesty’s patronage of our race meeting. We are once again delighted to welcome to Sandown Park our most loyal of supporters, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who is racing with us today. This unique meeting has a very special feel about it. It’s partly the excitement of seeing service riders taking on Sandown Park’s formidable fences, partly the pleasure in meeting up with old friends, partly the wonderful atmosphere that the racecourse fosters, but mostly because all of you love coming and supporting us. Please really enjoy yourselves today. Cheer, eat, drink, socialise and go home having had a fantastic time. I hope you all have a really enjoyable and, possibly profitable, day’s racing. Lieutenant General Sir Barney White-Spunner KCB, CBE Chairman, The Grand Military Race Committee

The ASCB’s key role will be to support the Army’s retention and recruiting efforts by offering sporting opportunity both as respite against busy programmes and operations but also to assist in honing the competitive edge of our people, so important in a volunteer organisation and one that is, instinctively, competitive in all that it does. ‘Courage, confidence and leadership. Energy, commitment and conviction. Self-belief. To keep going, no matter what. ….. Do you know what this is? You might think I’m talking about sport but what this really is, is fighting spirit. And it’s fighting spirit that makes you winners and it’s the same fighting spirit that turns an Army into a Winning Army. A winning Army founded on comradeship, self-discipline, trust, loyalty and mutual respect. I’m talking about a Winning Army imbued with infectious energy, a ruthless pursuit of professional excellence and a determination not to be thwarted by the inevitable setbacks. And a code of leadership that values the strengths and talents in each and every one of us, that keeps things in proportion; retains a dose of humility and an honest sense of decency. I’m talking about an inextinguishable will to win. And that’s our Army, our Army that we’re all proud to serve. And it’s made of flesh and blood and beating hearts. That’s why sport is so important. That’s why I love it.’ Chief of the General Staff General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, KCB, CBE, ADC Gen Army Sports Awards 2019.

Sandown Park’s ‘No Drinking & No Smoking’ zone is located within the Premier Enclosure. Introduced on the back of public feedback, this area offers racegoers the chance to view the racing without the distraction of smoke and drink (alcoholic or otherwise). The zone is easily distinguished by the painted steps and appropriate signage and will be marshalled by staff.
BEST SHOD COMPETITION THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF FARRIERS The Best Shod Award will take place in The Winners’ Enclosure after The Grand Military Gold Cup. Today’s Best Shod Horse will be judged by Robin May, a Farrier with over forty years’ experience shoeing competition horses and is a former England Shoeing Team member. We caught up with him at his forge in Wokingham to ask him about today’s competition.
1. WHAT IS A FARRIER?
A farrier is the name given to someone who maintains horses’ hooves.
2. CAN A HORSE RUN WITHOUT SHOES?
The rules highlight all horses competing in races must be shod, meaning that they must run with shoes.
3. HOW DOES A FARRIER PLACE A SHOE ON A HORSE’S HOOF?
The shoe and nails are attached to a non-sensitive part of the hoof.
4. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A FARRIER?
To become a Farrier you must undertake a five year training course.
5. CAN ANYONE SHOE A HORSE?
You must be qualified to shoe a horse - it is an offence to shoe a horse without a qualification.
6. WHO GOVERNS FARRIERS?
Farriers are trained and examined by The Worshipful Company of Farriers. A Livery company 661 years old this year and since 1977 the Company has the legal obligation to set the standards for horse shoeing. www.WCF.org.uk
7. CAN WOMEN BECOME FARRIERS?
Yes, the Worshipful Company of Farriers have outstanding female farriers in the UK.
8. WHAT ARE RACING SHOES MADE FROM?
Racing shoes are made from steel or aluminum.
9. CAN RACEHORSES WEAR PLASTIC SHOES?
Racehorses do not wear plastic shoes because they do not have sufficient traction on the ground.
10. HOW OFTEN IS A RACEHORSE SHOD?
In pre-race training, a racehorse is shod every 4 weeks and shod every time a horse runs a competitive race.
11. CAN A HORSE RUN FASTER BECAUSE OF THE SKILL IN SHOEING?
If a horse is well shod and comfortable with their shoes, it can optimise their performance but not necessarily enhance it.
12. IS IT DANGEROUS SHOEING A HORSE?
Working with any animal has its dangers, but half a ton thoroughbred in peak race condition can offer some scary moments!
13. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT SHOEING AND WHAT WILL YOU BE LOOKING FOR TODAY? A well-trimmed balanced foot with shoes suitable for purpose.
14. WILL THE HORSE WINNING THE BEST SHOD WIN THE RACE?
The farrier is a small but important part of the overall training process. It will have a good chance.
ROYAL PATRONAGE The Grand Military Gold Cup has enjoyed Royal Patronage since 1927, when HRH Prince Edward, Prince of Wales took over as Chairman of the Grand Military Race Committee. Subsequently, the Committee’s Constitution was signed by the Prince of Wales in 1931. In 1936, HRH The Duke of Gloucester took over as Chairman and in 1970, HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, became Patron and supported and encouraged the meeting until her death in 2002. She won the race on five occasions, for her Regiment, winning it on three consecutive occasions, with SPECIAL CARGO. The horse is epitomised in a bronze which stands at Sandown Park. In 1981, HRH The Prince of Wales, rides in the Grand Military Gold Cup and in 1987 HRH The Princess Royal rides CNOC NA CUILLE into eighth place. HRH The Princess Royal attends Grand Military Gold Cup Day, representing The Queen, on an annual basis when her diary allows. HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, enjoyed most success, as an owner, at Sandown Park. Not only did SPECIAL CARGO win three consecutive runnings between 1984-1986 of the Grand Military Gold Cup, he also won the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1984 in a dramatic finish and considered to be one of the best and most exciting renewals of this prestigious end of season race. Her last winner at Sandown Park was her homebred, FIRST LOVE, who won a Novice Hurdle on 8 March 2002, Grand Military Gold Cup Day. After the Queen Mother’s death, the horse ran in The Queen’s silks a further 15 times, winning five of them. The most poignant victory he recorded was at Sandown Park on 10 March 2006, winning the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Memorial Hunters’ Chase, once again on Grand Military Gold Cup Day.
HM THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE Following the Queen Mother’s death, HM The Queen became Patron of the Grand Military Race Committee and 2022 sees the 20th anniversary of her Patronage. Alongside the bronze of SPECIAL CARGO, stands a specially commissioned bronze bust of the Queen Mother. It was unveiled by HM The Queen in March 2003 on Grand Military Gold Cup Day. In 1990, The Queen presented her mother, with the fourth of her five Grand Military Gold Cup wins when THE ARGONAUT proved victorious on the day. 2022 sees the Platinum Jubilee of The Queen as monarch. This momentous anniversary will be reflected in and celebrated on the day.

At this year’s meeting, we fondly remember the follo
Andy Stewart Andy Stewart enjoyed great success with CENKOS and BIG BUCK’S amongst others but he was a great supporter of Sandown Park, in more ways than one. One race he would always try and target was the Grand Military Gold Cup. In March 2007, he achieved the victory he desired, when a most remarkable horse called HOO LA BALOO won with Jamie Snowden on board. He ran 15 times at Sandown Park over distances ranging from 2m to 3m 5f over a period of seven years, contesting a Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, a Tingle Creek Chase, and a couple each of Celebration Chases, London Nationals and bet365 Gold Cup races. Sandown Park would like to say thank you to Andy, and his family, for their support over many years. He will be sorely missed but his racing legacy lives on through The Stewart Family.
A N DY S T E WA R T, R JOHN THORNELOE
owing who were great supporters of military racing. Vee Shaw Vee (see image below, with Patrick Charmings), the wife of Ron Shaw (deceased), was a great supporter of all the military races. Together they won the Grand Military Gold Cup four times in 1988, 2002, 2003 and 2008. Ron served his national service in the RAOC and was once commandeered to go to Sandown Park to erect marquees for the Grand Military meeting. At the time he told his ‘squaddie’ mates that ‘’one day I will have a horse in that race’’.
Major John Thorneloe John Thorneloe was a huge supporter of military racing over many years. He rode in The Royal Artillery Gold Cup on three occasions (1954, 1955 and 1957), finishing 2nd at his first attempt on Three B’s. John’s support more recently, as an owner, was fantastic too. His generosity and love of the sport was infectious and it greatly benefited military racing at Sandown Park and the careers of those who rode for him. We offer our thanks to Veronica, his wife, for many happy memories.

THE GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP (SPONSORED BY THE MILITARY MUTUAL)
The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy of Caprice And Foal
The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy of Caprice and Foal will be presented today to the winning trainer of The Grand Military Gold Cup (sponsored by The Military Mutual). Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, graciously presented the trophy in memory of her late husband who was Chairman of the Grand Military Race Committee from 1936 to 1974. 2020 commemorates the 44th anniversary of the gifting of the trophy to Sandown Park with the race run in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Caprice belonged to Captain W H Eve (13th Hussars). She carried him at the head of his squadron in the cavalry charge at the Battle of Lajj, south of Baghdad, on 5 March 1917. Captain Eve was killed and the mare received many wounds. Over a year later, when she had recovered, she was recognised in the ranks of an Indian Cavalry Regiment. She was returned to her own Regiment and taken to her retirement in England. In May 1920, she had a foal by Gay Lally. The Officers of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own) commissioned a statuette representing Caprice and her foal and adopted the statuette as their Regimental wedding present. The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy is the present which the Officers of the Regiment gave to His Royal Highness in May 1935, on the occasion of his marriage. In 1975, Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, gave the statuette to the Grand Military Race Committee, of which her late husband was Chairman for 38 years. This was done with the approval of the Colonel, 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO), and some of the Officers who subscribed to the wedding present in 1935. 13 March 1976 saw the first race for The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy, in the presence of Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

SPORT CONTROL BOARD All soldiers play sport. Sport is important to the Army as it assists in developing our people; participation improves fitness, cohesion, commitment and pride – it makes better soldiers. And as military training hones soldiers’ professional skills, participation in sport hones competitive edge, nurtures team spirit, enables soldiers to be mentally and physically robust and builds confidence. The effect of regular participation in sport is to produce regiments and individuals who are better prepared to withstand the physical and mental demands and stresses of the battlefield. The Army has a long and distinguished sporting history. It has been involved at the inception of many of our national sports and their governing bodies, helping to shape the development of most sports; sport remains an integral part of Army life. The Army recognises and provides support to 46 sports ranging from the long established such as Rugby, Football, Cricket, Boxing and Shooting, through to those with increasing popularity and participation such as Martial Arts, Triathlon, Indoor Rowing and Wake Boarding. Army sportsmen and women participate at all competitive levels from regimental games through to Olympic and World Championships; every soldier is supported and encouraged to be the very best they can be. Sport in the Army is controlled and governed by the Army Sport Control Board, a Board of senior serving officers, supported by a civilian secretariat, whose purpose is to ensure our people have the opportunity and funding to participate and achieve their sporting aspirations - it helps them become better and helps the Army they are part of, to be better.

PLAY SMARTER
The handicapper seems to have underestimated the promising GIT MAKER and Jamie Snowden’s charge is taken to maintain his unbeaten record under Rules over a trip that will suit. West To The Bridge arrives at the top of his game and rates the main threat with Tristan Durrell helping to offset his rise in the weights, while it surely won’t be long before Kamaxos breaks his duck.

Plenty with chances in a competitive finale. DALAMOI’s latest Ffos Las second received a boost when the winner followed up at Leicester so he gets the nod to make a winning handicap debut. Dom of Mary, who has had wind surgery ahead of this switch to handicaps, Bourbali and Has Troke head the dangers.

The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre is the UK’s leading and world renowned military rehabilitation centre, established in 1949 to treat injured pilots and aircrew. Since that time, it has developed into a tri-service organisation with a weekly patient cohort of 120, treating a rangeofinjuries, including significant life changing disabilities. Each and every one of our patients have their own personal stories of their journey through rehabilitation. However, they all share one common goal as they climb the rehabilitation mountain and that is maximising their potential for their future. For some that may mean sporting and professional achievements, for others it is simply to be able to live independently or be able tosupport their families. The DMRC Benevolent Fund is able to support our rehabilitation teams in establishing forward thinking and innovative therapy ideas by which to capitalise on the engagement and motivation of our patients. The competitive nature of our military personnel is captured by these initiatives and Therapeutic outcomes are subsequently outstanding. The DMRC Benevolent Fund enables the patients and staff the opportunity to purchase items that are not accessible via any other means. Everyone’s future is hugely important. In the here and now, the DMRC Benevolent Fund aims to prepare patients to face their challenges through support, equipment and social opportunities.
