Sandown Racecard - Saturday 5th February

Page 1

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Sandown Park today for Virgin Bet Contenders Day, a terrific day of racing featuring seven high-class races. We give thanks to Virgin Bet for their support of today's card, which includes the feature Grade One Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Novices' Chase. This two-and-a-half mile race over the bigger obstacles has been won in the past by some wonderful horses, including three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate, three-time Betfair Chase winner Bristol De Mai and Tingle Creek winner Defi Du Seuil. We look forward to seeing who will add their name to the roll of honour this afternoon. Much like the Scilly Isles, the Listed Virgin Bet Contenders Hurdle is a race that can throw up clues for the big spring festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree and although small, today's field looks highly competitive. The Grade Three Virgin Bet Heroes Handicap Hurdle looks like a fascinating puzzle to solve, with some upwardly mobile horses taking on more experienced rivals. The first four finishers in our opening race, the Virgin Bet Novices' Hurdle, could well return to Sandown Park at the end of the season, as they will become eligible for the bet365 Novices' Championship Hurdle Series Final on Saturday 23rd April. We will be showing both International Rugby games from the opening weekend of the Six Nations Championship in the Surrey Hall. Our Diamond Edge bar will remain open after racing for the duration of the Scotland vs England match (last orders 18:15) and some light bite food options will be available. Please consider wearing a face covering in indoor and enclosed spaces where social distancing is not possible. QR codes remain located around the racecourse to enable you to check in using the NHS COVID-19 app, should you wish to. I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck and hope that you all have a fantastic time with us here at Sandown Park. Sarah Drabwell General Manager of Sandown Park Racecourse

PLAY SMARTER

SHALLWEHAVEONEMORE, an impressive winner of a Kempton bumper on his debut in March, has shown plenty of ability on both his starts over hurdles despite pulling hard, and this looks an excellent opportunity back under less testing conditions for him to get off the mark for the season. Balkeo is an interesting recruit for Nicky Henderson who requires close market attention.

Last year’s race looked set to be battled out by Kauto Star novices’ winner Shan Blue and Henry VIII Novices’ runner up Hitman. However, it was the 14/1 shot, Sporting John, who landed the prize for connections. Detached at the back on the pack at the beginning of the race and making several jumping errors early on under Richard Johnson, the sixyear-old never looked the winner until making smooth headway three from home. Despite Hitman was no doubt travelling the best before his fall at the 12th obstacle, Sporting John made full use of the error to win going away by three and a half lengths. Shan Blue finsished in second followed by Paint The Dream.

Staying handicap hurdles don’t get much hotter than this. REE OKKA isn’t as battle hardened as the rest of these but the fact he looks a fluent jumper should hold him in good stead now moving into a big-field handicap and an opening mark of 130 could prove lenient given the way he took care of some decent opposition last time. Beauport, Green Book and Orby’s Legend head the many possible dangers.

PLAY SMARTER

FARINET left his reappearance effort behind to bring up a second course victory here 4 weeks ago, and with further progress on the cards now stepping up in trip, Venetia Williams’ charge gets the vote. PLAY SMARTER

PEEJAYBEE was a warm order for his handicap debut at Doncaster and, while he found one too good, the way he travelled suggests he’s well capable of defying this sort of mark, so he takes marginal preference over Whistleinthedark, who has improved with each run over hurdles to this point. The sponsorship payment of £500 will be distributed equally amongst all horses starting in this race in accordance with paragraphs 24 to 27 of the Stakes and Prize Money Code. This race will be restricted to 18 runners plus two reserves. The two reserves will be nominated as R19 and R20. The procedure for the allocation and operation of the reserves protocol will be as detailed in the notice headed ‘Reserves’ which has been published in The Racing Calendar and which also appears in the important notices following the Standard Conditions on the Racing Bulletin area of the BHA Racing Administration Site. Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they must notify the Racing Calendar Office immediately when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised. The penalty referred to under Rule will be waived for any horse which is deemed a non-runner by 1.00 p.m. on the day before the race.
