THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Sandown Park today for one of the highlights of the Jumps season, Betfair Tingle Creek Saturday. This fixture is a firm favourite among racing fans new and old and one we all look forward to, with the racing and atmosphere promising to be hugely enjoyable. If this is your first visit, you are in for a treat! We are very grateful to our headline sponsor Betfair, who support four of this afternoon's seven races, including the feature Grade One Betfair Tingle Creek Chase, and to Close Brothers, who sponsor this afternoon's other Grade One, the Close Brothers Henry VIII Novices' Chase. Our first race remembers a great friend of Sandown Park – and indeed Jump racing – Andy Stewart, who passed away earlier this year. Andy Stewart was a passionate supporter of racing and he and his family owned some of the sport's most successful and popular horses. The Betfair Tingle Creek Chase has been won in the past by some of the very best Jumps horses the sport has seen, including Desert Orchid, Moscow Flyer, Kauto Star, Sprinter Sacre and Altior. The race is named after Tingle Creek, a flamboyant and brilliant chaser who won several times here at Sandown Park. We look forward with anticipation to witnessing today's race. Our second race, the Racing Is Everyone's Sport Mares' Handicap Hurdle, recognises a wonderful initiative by Great British Racing to welcome LGBTQ+ participation in the sport of horseracing, bringing the racing community together to champion inclusion for everyone. We are very proud to support this campaign alongside GBR and Betfair. I would like to extend my best wishes to Racecourse Chairman Peter Jensen and to Di Arbuthnot, Nick Attenborough and Stephen Smith, for whom Betfair Tingle Creek Saturday is their last fixture as Racecourse Directors. As members of the Racecourse Committee, they have guided and shaped the direction of Sandown Park for many years between them and we are very grateful for the work they have done to ensure our on-going success. You will see in your racecard we have included 15 races in chronological order, as we have partnered with Aintree Racecourse to show all eight races from their Becher Chase Day on our big screens. We are continuing to recommend wearing face masks in crowded indoor spaces and checking in via the NHS COVID-19 app. QR codes remain located around the racecourse to enable you to check in should you wish to. I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck and hope that you all have a fantastic time with us here at Sandown Park.

Andy Stewart Today’s first race on the card, the “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle, is named in tribute to Andy Stewart, who sadly passed away in September of this year. He was, indeed, a great friend of Sandown Park. Andy has left his own indelible mark, not only on the racing world, but also on the financial and business worlds. He was also a big supporter of the charity sector, in particular, raising awareness for spinal injury charities. There is, no doubt, that BIG BUCK’S was The Stewart Family’s most successful and well known horse. A four time consecutive winner of the World Hurdle between 2009 and 2012, he broke the world record achieving 18 consecutive victories by winning the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury on 1 December 2012. Although, BIG BUCK’S never raced at Sandown Park, his exploits and contribution to racing were recognised when Andy received the bronze Sandown Park “Special” Award presented on the final day of the 2012 Jump Season. One horse, in particular, owned by the family can be associated with Sandown Park and secured them their first Grade 1 win. The horse, in question, was CENKOS, a charismatic chestnut who raced 64 times, winning 18 of them. He ran eight times here, in four consecutive Tingle Creek Steeple Chases, winning it in 2002. He also won two Celebration Chases for good measure. Andy was a great supporter of Sandown Park, in more ways than one, but one race he would always try and target was the Grand Military Gold Cup for Military Amateur Riders. In March 2007, he achieved the victory he desired, when a most remarkable horse called HOO LA BALOO won with Jamie Snowden on board. He ran 15 times at Sandown Park over distances ranging from 2m to 3m 5f over a period of seven years, contesting a Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, a Tingle Creek Chase, and a couple each of Celebration Chases, London Nationals and bet365 Gold Cup races. Sandown Park would like to say thank you to Andy, and his family, for their support over many years. He will be sorely missed but his racing legacy lives on through The Stewart Family.

With some strong bumper form behind him, MIGHT I looked useful when quickening clear of his rivals at Newton Abbot in October and he can leave the bare form of that well behind. There’s depth to this though, with Name In Lights open to progress, while six-figure point recruit Constitution Hill demands a second look.

PLAY SMARTER

Gary Moore has a good record in this contest and his runner NATURALLY HIGH, who ran to a useful on the level in France, looks the one to beat after easily opening his hurdling account at Lingfield. Fellow ex-French recruit Happy And Fine appeals as the one to give him most to do starting out in handicaps off a good mark. City Derby and Colden’s Dream both figure on the shortlist too in an interesting handicap.

Following a promising hurdles debut effort, it was hard not to be impressed with the manner of WHITE PEPPER’s runaway Galway success in October, and with further progress distinctly possible, she earns the vote to follow up. Harry Skelton was his usual positive self aboard the 2/1 favourite in last years renewal. He set a blistering pace that his rivals quite simply couldn’t live with and despite a sketchy jump at the last he was an impressive winner. The Tizzard trained Eldorado Allen couldn’t live with the ferocious gallop and both he and GA Law were forced into jumping errors that eventually cost them any chance in the finish. Second favourite Hitman was keen early on under Harry Cobden and was the only other runner who could go the gallop. He stayed on nicely but had given himself too much ground to make up.

KEY CONTENDERS THIRD TIME LUCKI Already firmly in the picture for this years Arkle, Third Time Lucki should take all the beating for the Skeltons, who won this race last year. He’s 3lb clear of his nearest rival on ratings and a clear round should see him win.

HHHHH EDWARDSTONE A second season Novice, Edwardstone has the most experience in the field but that comes at a cost as no seven-year-old has won this race in the last 10 years. He won well at Warwick on his last start and a similar performance would see him go close.

HHHH MINELLA DRAMA Donald McCains six-year-old has taken a real step forward over fences after putting up some good performances over hurdles. He was second to War Lord but if his jumping can improve, he may reverse that form.

THIRD TIME LUCKI has been an impressive winner of his 2 chase starts at Cheltenham and is fancied to provide Dan and Harry Skelton with back-to-back wins in this contest. Paul Nicholls has a record 7 wins in this so it’s interesting that he fast tracks Il Ridoto to Grade 1 company after his Newbury handicap success last week and he’s feared most ahead of Edwardstone in a good renewal.

The 2021 two day Betfair Tingle Creek Festival marks the last race meeting as Chairman of Sandown Park for Peter Jensen, who is standing down from the position at the end of this year following his five year tenure. We would like to pay tribute to and thank him for his dedication and contribution to this racecourse in particular, to the The Jockey Club and also to the racing industry in general. Peter was elected a Member of The Jockey Club in December 2010. He was formerly a Director of Newmarket Racecourse for ten years and Chairman of Nottingham Racecourse for five years between 2011-2016. In his corporate life, Peter held a number of senior roles in his 21 years with SmithKlineBeecham including Chairman of Consumer Healthcare Europe and between 1998–2001, he held the position of President of Worldwide Supply Operations, based in Philadelphia. Peter is currently Chairman of a number of public and private companies, and is a Director of The Osborne Studio Gallery. He is also Chairman of the BHA’s Racing Group. Apart from his commercial business interests, Peter was Chairman of The Home of Horseracing Trust from its formation, set up by Forest Heath District Council and the National Horseracing Museum, over 15 years ago, with the purpose of raising funds and developing plans for the museum to move from its original High Street site in Newmarket, to a large new centre at Palace House where it could become a modern world class visitor attraction. Over that period of 15 years, more than £19 million was raised to help pay for it. It was a memorable day when HM The Queen opened the new

Peter Jensen Chairman 2017 - 2021 National Horseracing Museum in 2016, “A job well done”. Peter has been involved in the ownership of horses over many years. His best horse, to date, to run in his colours was KEW GREEN. Trained by Paul Webber, in 2005, he notched up three wins including the Rosebery Heritage Handicap at Kempton Park and followed up on his next run with a victory in the Suffolk Heritage Handicap at Newmarket. Peter has been instrumental in setting up the Carbine Club (of which he is President) Racing syndicates. WATER’S EDGE, trained by George Baker, was the first horse to run in the UK in the club colours and has been a stalwart and provided much entertainment winning three times at Windsor. Peter’s colours enjoyed a great success this year with the 2yo filly DESTINY QUEEN, also trained by George Baker, who won well first time out at Ascot in July over 7 furlongs. She has been mentioned in the betting for the 2022 1000 Guineas and will, no doubt, enter the Winner’s Enclosure again next season and beyond. We would like to wish Peter, his wife Sue, and his family every success in the future, both on and off the course.

Previous Cheltenham Festival winners Imperial Aura and Simply The Betts match up again, with the latter coming out on top the last time these two superstars met as Novices’. James Bowen takes the mount on Tiger Roll, a two-time Grand National winner here in 2018 and 2019, and, although this trip might be on the short side, he is always hard to oppose. Sam Brown, The Two Amigos and Wishing And Hoping make up the 8-Strong field.

This race is named in honour of Many Clouds after his victory in 2016. National Hunt racing by nature breeds heroes, equine and human, who capture a special place in the public’s heart. The legacy of 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds continues to live on as racing returns to the scene of his greatest triumph. Trevor Hemmings’ third winner of the Grand National (following Hedgehunter and Ballabriggs) was foaled in 2007, by Cloudings out of Bobbing Back. He was trained by Oliver Sherwood and ridden by Leighton Aspell, who partnered him in all his 27 career starts. He won 12 races worth £927,732 in prize money, completing two Grand Nationals and winning the 2014 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury - the only horse to have won both big races in the same season. He was a horse so hugely and warmly acclaimed that practically the whole population of Lambourn, where he was trained, turned out to welcome him home after his outstanding Aintree victory under 11st 9lb. His honesty and battling determination were the qualities that made people love him, and these attributes were never displayed more vividly than in his final race, Cheltenham’s Cotswold Chase, in January 2017. That day, Many Clouds literally grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat when fighting back in a duel up the famous hill to overcome the brilliant Thistlecrack - but tragically he subsequently passed away. He is immortalised in Grand National history, not only on the boards of previous winners, but in the hearts of the public.

SIMPLY THE BETTS finished behind Protektorat in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham, but that was a most encouraging effort given that he was returning from a year off and the combination of this step up in trip and sharper track could be just the tonic. Politologue really is one of racings favourites and last year he made it two wins in this race. His first came back in 2017 and to win it again three years later shows just what a brave and talented horse he is for Paul Nicholls and connections. He became only the third nine-yearold in the last 10 years to win the race when beating stable mate Greaneteen. Harry Skelton kept it simple from the front and made use of his excellent jumping to come home a comfortable seven length winner. Rouge Vif made a mistake two out when ultimately held and Greaneteen could only pick up the pieces back in second.

TINGLE CREEK won three renewals of the Sandown Pattern Chase, the predecessor to this race, breaking the track record twice in the process. He was widely renowned as the best jumper of a fence of all time and that is why he lends his name to this great race.

KEY CONTENDERS CHACUN POUR SOI Wille Mullins pride and joy, Chacun Pour Soi has done everything but win at the festival and if he can replicate his final run last year, he is going to take all the beating. A two-mile specialist, the only question mark would be fitness.

HHHHH NUBE NEGRA Despite beating Chacun at Cheltenham, Nube Negra was put back in his place after finishing 25 lengths behind him at Punchestown. The season may well have caught up on him and his reappearance at Cheltenham was electric. It should be a cracking match between the two.

HHHH GREANETEEN With no Politologue, Nicholls hopes rest on last years Celebration Chase winner. He could only manage fourth on reappearance but was giving away a lot of weight and is entitled to come on for that run. He finished third last year but if he can continue that upward curve, he should be right there come the line.

TINGLE CREEK PERSONAL MEMORIES FROM WINNING MOST JOCKEY The following extracts are from 'The Going Up was worth the Coming Down,' the autobiography of jockey Ian Watkinson, who rode more winners on Tingle Creek than any other. TINGLE CREEK BY IAN WATKINSON Tingle Creek had been a top steeplechaser in America prior to joining [trainer] Tom Jones in 1972. I rode him almost every day at home but I never schooled him over a fence. Tom said of schooling him, "He knows more about jumping than you'll ever know." I know what he meant. He was a nightmare but he knew everything. So when I rode him for the first time in a race, finishing fourth in the Benson and Hedges Chase at Sandown Park in November 1975, it was the first time I'd jumped anything with him. He used to get wound up anyway but Tom would deliberately wind him up the day before a race so that he would get to the races and just bolt. The only choice you had with Tingle Creek was which direction you went in; you didn't have an awful lot of choice about the speed. He didn't really jump the fences as other horses did. He'd gallop over them, literally run over the top of them. He was extremely clever and could fiddle a fence if he needed to. But when he stood off, he stood off miles. He was something else. People forget just how great a horse he was. Nothing could touch him on good or firm ground. He was unbeatable and ran like an out-of-control car.

Ian Watkinson will be signing copies of 'The Going Up was worth the Coming Down' in the Surrey Hall today.

TINGLE CREEK

SEVEN OF THE BEST

This afternoon’s Betfair Tingle Creek Chase has been one of the highlights of the racing calendar for many years and a glance at the roll of honour reveals some of the greats that have taken this prize. The test of jumping fences over two miles at Sandown Park is like no other and it takes an exceptional horse to excel around here. Ahead of this year’s renewal we have taken a trip down memory lane to consider seven of the greatest Tingle Creek winners in the race’s long and distinguished history.

DESERT ORCHID – 1988 The legendary grey enjoyed a glittering career in which he landed four King George VI chases at Kempton Park, a Cheltenham Gold Cup and an Irish Grand National to name just three. He won the Tingle Creek in 1988 and there was drama at the start as 2/1 favourite Vodkatini refused to race. Thankfully ‘Dessie’ had no such ideas and set off in front, jumping boldly in the hands of Simon Sherwood. He quickened up on the run to the second last to put his rivals under pressure and won with twelve lengths to spare at the line.

FLAGSHIP UBERALLES – ‘99, ‘00, ‘01 He remains the only horse to win the Tingle Creek on three occasions and, of course, was even more unique as he did so in the care of three different trainers. Paul Nicholls saddled him when he won the race as a five-year-old in 1999 as he battled back to get the better of Direct Route. Things were a little more comfortable twelve months on as he won by eleven lengths for trainer Noel Chance. His final success came for Philip Hobbs in 2001 as he showed all of his class to get the better of the well-fancied Edredon Bleu by four lengths.

MOSCOW FLYER – 2003, 2004 A very special two-mile chaser for Jessica Harrington who won the race back-to-back in 2003 and 2004. The latter was a vintage renewal of the race with the previous season’s Champion Chaser Azertyuiop and Arkle winner Well Chief both lining up. There wasn’t much between the three of them jumping the last but the ten-year-old found a bit more for Barry Geraghty on the run to the line and remains the oldest winner in the race’s history. He retired at the end of the 2006 season with ten Grade 1 chase successes to his name.

KAUTO STAR – 2005, 2006 One of the most famous steeplechasers to win this race, the amazing Kauto Star defied doubts over the shorter trip - he won the 3m Betfair Chase on his previous start - to blow away the high-class competition, including Voy Por Ustedes, in a brilliant performance in 2006. He would go on to win 13 more Grade 1s including an unprecedented five King George VI Chases at Kempton Park and two Cheltenham Gold Cups. The Paul Nicholls trained superstar was certainly one of the best-loved chasers of the past twenty years.

SPRINTER SACRE – 2012 For many people he is the best two mile chaser we have ever seen and having dominated the novice chasing ranks, he came here in December 2012 with a lot of expectation on his shoulders. However, you would never have known as the six-year-old travelled strongly throughout before cruising past his main market rival Sanctuaire on the run to the third last. He jumped the final two fences with his usual exuberance and coasted home to demolish his rivals by fifteen lengths. This would become a familiar theme as he notched Grade 1 victories at Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown in the Spring in similarly devastating fashion.

ALTIOR - 2018 Unbeaten over fences beforehand, Altior was Nicky Henderson’s heir to Sprinter Sacre after his retirement and he quickly chalked up a string of Grade 1 victories in similarly stunning style. After Arkle, Champion Chase and Celebration Chase wins, he came back to Sandown Park for the Tingle Creek in 2018 and despite the best efforts of 2016 winner, Un De Sceaux, powered up the hill to win by four lengths. It was his tenth win over fences in a row and his sixth Grade 1 over the larger obstacles, a truly sensational feat.

POLITOLOGUE- 2017, 2020 A dual winner of this race from leading race trainer Paul Nicholls, this ten-year-old made his winning debut in this race in 2017 in the hands of Harry Cobden. He bounced back in excellent style to win again last year by an impressive seven lengths from stable mate Greaneteen. One of his most iconic wins was in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase in 2017, winning by an impressive 17 lengths from Vaniteux. He wasn’t disgraced on reappearance at Cheltenham a fortnight ago, when second in the Shloer Chase, beating odds-on favourite Put The Kettle On by four-and-a-half lengths. He has no doubt been an eye-catching grey, who has been well supported in each of his chasing starts.

With the tongue strap and cheekpieces applied, Conor O’Farrell guided his mount through the field to land the key trial for the Randox Grand National. Held up towards the rear, the 11-year-old always jumped soundly throughout the race, picking off rivals one-by-one. Close up 3 fences from home, David Pipe’s inmate challenged for the lead 2 out, before putting his rivals to the sword to go clear on the run in. A gutsy final effort up the straight saw him run out a very convincing winner by an astonishing 24 lengths, with Kimberlite Candy finishing in the same place as 2020 in second, and joint-favourite Le Breuil back in third.

KEY CONTENDERS VIEUX LION ROUGE This 12-year-old now bids to win this contest for the third time, after taking this race by storm last year, being sent off at 12/1. Despite a poor season return at Chepstow, this should be a lot more to his tune and see him back to his best. David Pipe’s horse seems to love the Becher Chase and he will take all the beating once again, albeit 5lb higher in the handicap this year.

SNOW LEOPARDESS With placed effort in Graded company last season, Snow Leopardess looks a horse with vast potential this season. She scored impressively on seasonal reapperance at Bangor and looks to play a key part in this if taking to the larger fences. Although she arrives on a career high mark of 140, she is right towards the top of the market, with an excellent jockey booking of Aidan Coleman to aid her cause.

CHRIS’S DREAM

Rated 162 and a huge weight to defy, Chris’s Dream is still in with a great chance of taking home the prize money. Henry De Bromhead’s gelding was travelling well before he blundered and unseated Darragh O’Keeffe late on in the Grand National, so it would be no suprise for another big effort today. This 9-year-old has some cracking form in his locker, including a Grade 2 win at Gowran Park, and if the ground is soft enough, he will be a major player.

KIMBERLITE CANDY

CHECKITOUT

Sent off at 14/1 for this race last year, Tom Lacey’s horse ran with a lot of promise into second for the second year running. He hasn’t been seen since pulling up in the Grand National earlier in the year but, this horse has proved time and time again that he goes well fresh. Making his seasonal debut today 3lb better off than last year, this 9-year-old looks to have leading claims once again, with Jonathan Burke in the saddle.

With Nigel Twiston-Davies being the leading trainer in this contest, it would be rude to not give his horse a mention. This 7-year-old was a dual-winner last season over the three-mile trip and his comeback run behind Larry in the Grade 3 Bateaux London Gold Cup Handicap Chase would give him an each-way chance. A 4lb hike in the weights is a slight concern but he is an interesting contender nevertheless.

PLAY SMARTER

Tom Lacey sent out Kateson to land this in 2020 and might be able to stage a repeat courtesy of POUNDING POET, who lost his unbeaten record in handicaps on his C&D return but still shaped well in second so can improve again and strike under Robbie Dunne. Olly Murphy is another trainer who has tasted recent success in this and his Tamar Bridge heads the many dangers along with Storm Nelson.

PLAY SMARTER

ELHAM VALLEY has the distinction of being the only horse to have inflicted defeat on Hudson de Grugy at Sandown, and he looks capable of winning a race of this nature judged on his fine effort at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Hudson de Grugy has clearly improved since finishing second to the selection here 12 months ago and is feared, but the unexposed Samarrive looks a bigger threat.
