Thank you so much for your continued support and co-operation. We hope you have a wonderful day with us.

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to Sandown Park for Countryside Day, which heralds the return of Jump racing to the course. We have seven fantastic races to enjoy this afternoon, the highlight of which is the John O'Leary Memorial Future Stars Intermediate Chase, a Listed race over fences that has been won by some top class performers in recent years. In 2015 the race was won by Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Coneygree, while Grade 1 winners Might Bite and Santini took the race in 2017 and 2019 respectively. The race is this year run in memory of professional golfer John O'Leary, an Irish Open Championship winner who was born in Ireland but lived for many years in Esher. John passed away in March 2020 and many of his friends and family are joining us here today for a fundraiser in his honour. We are very grateful that they have chosen to sponsor this race and hope that they have a wonderful time at Sandown Park. Away from the racing we have an artisan market for you to browse and shop, with stalls holders offering brownies and fudge, bath and body products, handmade bags, wax melts and warmers, books, coffee and much more – ideal for getting some early Christmas shopping done. There are also activities for younger racegoers, including a petting farm, autumn crafts and face painting. I wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck today and hope that you all have a wonderful time with us here at Sandown Park. PHIL WHITE London Regional Director, The Jockey Club

PLAY SMARTER

It could be worth chancing COUNT MERIBEL. It’s been a while since he’s run to his useful best but the handicapper has given him a huge chance ahead of a rare run over hurdles and his good record fresh bodes well. His stablemate Beauport is obviously a lot safer on paper having run his rivals ragged in the EBF Novices’ Final here when last seen. Champagne Court and Broken Halo are also considered.

Third Race

PLAY SMARTER

A few in with chances but the vote goes to LAVORANTE. Gary Moore’s charge showed plenty of promise when finishing third on his hurdling debut at Fontwell back in March and, with improvement likely and the yard in red-hot form, he’s taken to score second time up. Olly Murphy has a couple with leading chances and his Lupus Regem is narrowly preferred for the forecast spot over Bombs Away.

A TRIBUTE TO JOHN O’ LE ARY - BY RO D DY C AR R

BYE BYE OLD FRIEND John’s greatest moment came in 1982 when he won the Irish Open. The scene and setting at Portmarnock could not have been more fitting. In those days, the Irish Open was the biggest sports festival in Ireland along with the Irish Derby and was attended by over 100,000 fans for the week. John held on to win by a stroke for a massive win. His contribution to the European Tour over the years has been enormous and something he felt passionately about. He adored his son Marc and was so proud of him and of his first grandchild, which he was lucky enough to experience and love before he left us. Sue, his second wife, looked after him to the end and they spent many good years together in Esher. JJ, it was my privilege and great pleasure to be your friend and I will smile every time I think of you. Rod the Rocket (as you always called me) Roddy Carr

A very smart novice chaser, CHANTRY HOUSE was possibly feeling the effects of a big run at Cheltenham previously when left with a Grade 1 at his mercy at Aintree in April. However, his record under Rules is hard to knock and he can come out on top. That said, The Big Breakaway was shaping encouragingly prior to falling on return at Newton Abbot and the step back up to 3m is a positive.
