A guide to the horse’s recent form

RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Raceform Median Time: 1 min 30.50 secs

2024: LUTHER 2 9 7 Kieran Shoemark 15-2 (Charlie Fellowes) 4 ran

Betting Forecast: EVENS Victorious One (GB), 4-1 Island Bear (IRE), 11-2 Lord Cloughan (GB), 9-1 Goodwood Galaxy (GB), 14-1 Labiche (GB)

Race Summary: Quite a trappy maiden but VICTORIOUS ONE makes plenty of appeal after a promising start at Goodwood when looking like he’d relish this extra furlong. The money was down on Island Bear on debut and he’ll reward his supporters at some point on that encouraging showing. 330,000 gns Frankel colt Lord Cloughan might be the pick of the newcomers.

The INSPIRE Foundation are delighted to be back again at Salisbury Races. We are extremely grateful as ever to Whitsbury Manor Stud, who are generously sponsoring the 2.55pm ‘Whitsbury Manor Stud Supporting the INSPIRE Foundation Veterans’ Handicap Stakes’ race.

INSPIRE is a national charity which raises funds for a scientific programme to ‘research independence, quality of life and dignity after spinal cord injury’ (SCI). Spinal cord injuries are always are life changing, usually permanent and affect more than 100,000 people in the UK, with three new cases every day. Unlike other larger research charities, we receive no NHS or Government funding support, so are committed to generating all our funds ourselves.

Please come and support our charity by making a donation, buying an INSPIRE branded product or wearing a free and distinctive INSPIRE Foundation rosette. Better still, why not buy a raffle ticket and the chance to win the mystery prize (just pop over to the INSPIRE Stand to see what it will be on the day).

Race Summary: Only 5 runners but it looks a tricky affair in which a case can be made for all. MIDDLE AGES has cheekpieces added for his handicap debut and gets the narrow vote with the Andrew Balding team in such good form. If Patsy Snugfit can translate her good 1 1/4m course form to the longer trip she may provide the chief threat ahead of Cape Breton, who shapes as if he will benefit from the step up to 1 1/2m.

SIR PERCY’S WIN AT SALISBURY –

23rd JUNE 2005

It was twenty years ago, at the Bibury race meeting, that Sir Percy won at Salisbury. Trained by Marcus Tregoning, and owned by Anthony and Victoria Pakenham, he was successful in the 6 furlongs ‘New Wiltshire Stand Champagne Auction Conditions Stakes’ for 2-year-olds - a race replaced in more recent years, by the Restricted Novice Stakes.

The Tregonings, who train in nearby Whitsbury, have very kindly sponsored the last race of the day to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sir Percy’s win at Salisbury. We are very pleased to welcome them, and also Martin Dwyer who rode Sir Percy in all his races. Martin, who had 1,543 winners in Britain, is now retired from race riding, and works as a presenter and analyst on Racing TV.

Marcus Tregoning said: “Sir Percy notched up his second win of his 2-year-old career at Salisbury on his way to winning the Champagne Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. He was crowned unbeaten Champion 2-year-old in 2005”.

Marcus had boldly predicted that Sir Percy would win these two big 2-year-old races when interviewed by the media, after the Salisbury success. He was to be proved correct.

“The ultimate prize for any trainer or owner is to win the Derby which Sir Percy won the following year on 3rd June 2006. He retired to Kirsten Rausing’s Lanwades Stud where he had a successful stallion career. He remains at Lanwades Stud where is living happily retired, aged 22”.

Martin Dwyer added: “I remember the day at Salisbury well. During the race, I tracked the leaders, and although hampered a furlong out, I drove him out to lead up the last 200 yards to win by just over a length. We knew we had a very good horse”.

“I will always have such great fondness for Sir Percy. After finishing second in the 2,000 Guineas, he provided me with my greatest day as a jockey, winning the Derby. He was so gutsy that day, as he prevailed in a blanket finish of four horses. I can’t believe it is now twenty years since he won here. It is great to be back at Salisbury to remember the occasion”.
