OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufﬁcient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

MARK HERITAGE

Remembering Jane

It’s a year since Jane’s passing, but it seems nothing like that. She is in the thoughts of family and friends constantly, as she fully deserves to be.

Today is a day to celebrate Jane. We’ll remember her courageousness and strength during a dreadful last 4 years, but also her compassion, kindness, thoughtfulness and consideration towards those whose lives she touched.

Jane and Mark were together for 22 memorable years. It’s been heard before, but they really were complete opposites. Mark’s passion for cricket was steadfastly countered by the oft heard statement ‘poxy cricket’, as another summer Saturday was ruled out for joint adventures

Mark was able to interest Jane eventually in his other passion, National Hunt racing. That brand of racing principally takes place in winter, a season that’s known for being a tad chilly at times. Jane was quite content to sit inside until the last possible moment. She also encouraged him to become an owner of horses, although long drives to far off racecourses tended to be declined.

Jane and Mark were able to take many foreign and UK holidays together, and it’s fitting that the ‘cloud’ contains the many photos that were taken on these memorable trips. Most memorable is Mark’s 60th birthday in 2020. It coincided with a worldwide ‘event’ that affected everybody one way or another

Jane was determined that the day would not be forgotten. A cake was baked, a flask of coffee prepared and off they went to Southsea seafront. It blew a gale that day but it has special memories.

The sadness of losing her has left a Jane sized hole in the hearts of the many who knew and loved her but, at the same time, the memories we all share will always keep her close.
