Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Excellence runs alongside the Jockey Coaching Programme (JCP) and is the industry accreditation for all apprentice and conditional races which run under hands and heels or training race conditions. Initially set up by The British Racing School as ‘Support for Young Jockeys’ in 2006, the BHA re-branded the scheme in 2010 as ‘Racing Excellence’. In February 2014 The British Racing School took over the management of Racing Excellence and The JCP. The latter gives all Apprentices and Conditionals the opportunity to have a coach. All coaches who are all ex-Jockeys can be on hand to help with fitness, riding technique, nutrition and race reviews. A coach will attend every Racing Excellence race to conduct the pre-race course walk and then will also debrief afterwards.

THE COLIN HINTON & MITCH HINTON NOVICE STAKES The Hinton brothers, Colin and Mitch, are well known and popular characters in the Salisbury area. However, Mitch sadly passed away in 2008 and is very much missed by family and friends. Mitch started his life in the bookmaking industry, when he left school and first worked for Owen Noyce, at his credit office in Brown Street. Mitch then went to work with Philip Swanton and Chris Sandell, who ran Reeves Racing, at their shop in Endless Street. After leaving Reeves, Mitch spent many years as manager of the Tote bookmakers in Endless Street. It was appropriate that when Mitch retired from the Tote, he helped out Philip Swanton’s son Henry, on Derby and Grand National days, at Henry’s shop in Wilton. Mitch was also a familiar face on the ticket gate at Salisbury and other local tracks. Colin has enjoyed a lifelong passion for horse racing and has visited many of the courses across the south and west and also attends the occasional point to point meeting. Colin has also travelled further afield to follow his passion and one of his favourite trips was to Yarmouth. Although, his travelling companion has suggested that he spent more time eating cockles, than he did watching the racing. During his time following the horses, Colin has watched all the great jockeys and, in his opinion, Lester Piggott remains the best he has seen. We wish Colin and his guests an enjoyable day with plenty of winners.

Colin and Mitch are pictured at Lingfield in May 1999 with their good friends, Des Quinn and Colin Wright.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards the breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out up to £100,000 per filly.
