RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

THE ANDY HARDWICK & CLIVE LEONARD MEMORIAL NURSERY

HANDICAP STAKES

A race has been run in Andy’s memory since he passed away in 2020 We were very sad to be adding Leo’s name to the race, when he passed away in February 2023. He was a keen and long standing supporter of Salisbury Racecourse

Andy and Leo formed a friendship which started in the 1980’s and continued throughout their lives. They shared a passion for horse racing and football. Both men showed unstinting dedication and support to local football at Bemerton Heath Harlequins for over 40 years. Andy was Club Secretary, and Leo had many roles, including Vice Chairman, quiz master, and Play Your Cards Right host.

They enjoyed many happy days on the racecourse, both at Salisbury and further afield. Although, they had different approaches on-course Andy would be found in the betting ring, with a close eye on market moves and hunting the best price for his fancy. Leo followed his usual routine in life, by talking to everyone and anyone He was always interested to know more about whoever he met, and to hear their life story.

In May 2022 Leo thoroughly enjoyed meeting Brough Scott, on one of his infamous morning walks, when on a trip with friends to York racecourse

Leo was in awe of Andy’s great knowledge of the horse racing industry, and was always keen to learn as much as he could. As like most racegoers, the close friends had their favourite trainers. Andy was a fan of the Roger Charlton stable, and always followed his runners, especially on Lockinge Day at Newbury Leo had a soft spot for Amanda Perrett’s stable and it was rare that he didn’t back her runners wherever they raced.

Family and friends are in attendance this evening to remember Andy and Leo. Both men are very sadly missed, and will always be in our hearts.

Race Summary: UP THE PACE caught the eye when a tenderly-handled Kempton fifth last time out so is fancied to take a sizeable step forward now going handicapping and get off the mark Both Tiempo Alegre and Kaiya also appeal as likely improvers on their respective nursery debuts and can chase home the selection in that order.

Graham Daish Memorial British

EBF Novice Stakes

Today’s sponsored race is done in loving memory of Graham.

He was a loving husband, dad, grandad and great grandad.

He was the kindest man you could ever meet.

He loved horse racing, particularly his visits to Salisbury. He would also travel up and down the country, with his beloved wife, to enjoy different racecourses.

He would enjoy having his bets every day, without fail, even up until the end.

Graham would have loved being a part of today, and is deeply missed by everyone.

A massive thank you to everyone that has come today. The family are very grateful for all the help and care given at this difficult time.

Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to once againbesponsoringtheWeatherbys Stallion Book Persian Punch Conditions Stakes at Salisbury this evening, and 2021 winner Quickthorn takeshisplaceamongstafieldoffive.

He no doubt sets a high standard here if back to his best and is the one they all have to beat

Hughie Morrison’s seven-year-old has been well beaten on all three starts so far this term but is the highest rated in this field, with an official rating of 111, on account of his impressive campaign in 2023. The Nathaniel gelding won a strong renewal of the Listed Grand Cup StakesatYorkbeforeslippingthefield on route to an impressive six-length victoryintheGroup1GoodwoodCup. Versatile in terms of ground, he no doubt sets a high standard here if backtohisbestandistheonetheyall havetobeat.

SumoSamisanotherwhohasshown little in 2024 and needs a spark back to form but showed enough in two Group 2 victories last year to suggest she is well capable of taking this at her best. Paul and Oliver Cole’s four-year-old made virtually all to a

dominantwide-marginwinintheLillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood before digging in deep to land the Park Hill Stakes in game fashion. A strong and determined stayer, she perhaps needssoftunderfootconditionstobe seentobesteffect.

Drawn To Dream notched a Listed success in Germany last term and created a good impression on stable debut for Jamie Osborne when sixth in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot. She was disappointing at Beverley last time but should appreciateastepbackupintriphere withSaffieOsbornebackinthesaddle. There have been three three-yearold winners of this contest in the last 18renewals,mostrecentlyin2017,and Nigel Hawke’s Clear Storm should come forward for her stable debut at Kemptonlasttime.TheStormTheStars fillyreceivesplentyofweightallround here, but still has an awful lot to find on official ratings. Salsada too has a lot to find on ratings for Brian Ellison and embarks on her first start on the flat here since a fourth-placed finish over course and distance back in June of 2022. The seven-year-old has been kept busy over hurdles in the meantime but this is far from an easyassignmenttogetbackintothis sphere.
