WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE

Welcome to day one of our two-day mid-August race meeting.

Today features two Listed races which are generously supported by the European Breeders’ Fund. Last year’s Stonehenge Stakes was won by Godolphin’s Arabian Storm who became one of the favourites for the Derby, before a setback ruled him out The Upavon Fillies’ Stakes, our feature today, is another race we always look forward to staging.

Thank you for coming racing, as we very much appreciate your support. We hope that you have a pleasant visit, and that you will come and see us again soon. The dates of our remaining fixtures are on the back cover. If you have any comments or observations, please do email us at office@salisburyracecourse.co.uk

Best wishes,

The Directors & Staff of Salisbury Racecourse

A guide to the horse’s recent form

RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

SPANISH MANE recorded her 12th career triumph when winning at Lingfield last month and a subsequent 3lb rise should be no barrier to further success Julia Fielden’s nine-year-old is expected to have too much for recent Brighton second Kracking, though it would come as no surprise were he to push the selection all the way. Blacklion can chase the pair home.

TOTEWIN: SPANISH MANE

TOTEEACHWAY: KRACKING

Shout contested a warm novice at Windsor on his debut before getting off the mark over C&D three weeks ago but, although further progress is likely, the penalty will make things tougher With that in mind, a chance can be taken on REDORANGE, who has shown a similar level of form across his two starts and a step up to 6f could hold the key. Others to note include Nascimento and Gesundheit

TOTEWIN: REDORANGE

TOTEEACHWAY: SHOUT

It’s not often that Aidan O’Brien will send a horse to this venue, but he is one from three when doing so and THE PARTHENON can improve that record Pitched into Group 3 company on his debut, the son of Kingman was far from disgraced, before going on to break the maiden comfortably at Gowran. He holds some lofty entries, too, and is expected to have too much for New Century, who chased home the smart Al Qudra in a Listed contest at Ascot. Luther has a bit to find but is by no means ruled out

TOTEWIN: THE PARTHENON

TOTEEACHWAY: NEW CENTURY

MEET ME IN MERAKI relished the quick ground when staying on well to score a shade cosily over this trip at Chepstow last month and, with conditions to suit again, he looks to have a good chance of defying a 5lb rise to complete a double. First-time blinkers could help Forest Hills and he is on a fair mark, while Hey Big Spender ran well in defeat over 1m at Newbury latest and she’s respected stepping up in trip

TOTEWIN: MEET ME IN MERAKI

TOTEEACHWAY: FOREST HILLS

Rainbows Edge has a perfect record coming into this contest after she struck with ease under a penalty at Newmarket last time, and she looks well worth her place at this level. However, the vote goes to the more experienced FRANCOPHONE Charlie Johnston’s three-year-old was victorious in this grade at Goodwood two starts ago before finishing last in the Group 1 Pretty Polly at the Curragh. Sea Of Roses holds an obvious chance too.

TOTEWIN: FRANCOPHONE

TOTEEACHWAY: RAINBOWS EDGE

JIMMY MARK completed a double when accounting for his nearest rival by a length at Ffos Las last month and he is only 4lb higher for that success Stuart Kittow’s four-year-old has been a really consistent performer this year and could prove very hard to beat again. Dappled Light is in good form at present and finished a fair fourth at Chepstow on his latest outing, while Galactic Glow completes the shortlist.

TOTEWIN: JIMMY MARK

TOTEEACHWAY: DAPPLED LIGHT

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, the UAE’s leading distributor of horse feeds and requisites, is proud to partner with Salisbury Racecourse in encouraging young talent and promoting quality racing through support for the five-race Racing Excellence Apprentice Series and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai ‘City Bowl’ Day.

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI – RACING EXCELLENCE

APPRENTICE SERIES AT SALISBURY

The five race Racing Excellence Apprentice Series at Salisbury is generously sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai. It is specifically designed to assist the education and training of new and inexperienced jockeys.

The first race in the Series on 16th May was won by Shariq Mohd on Beau Jardine (11-10f) trained by Rachel Cook & John Bridger. The second race in the Series on 16th June was again won by Shariq Mohd on Tres Chic (17-2) trained by Stan Moore. The third race in the Series on 13th July was won by R M Mulligan on Alpine Girl (7-2JF) trained by James Fanshawe The final race of the Series is on 5th September.

A points system operates throughout the Series and is allocated as follows: 1st – 5 points; 2nd – 3 points; 3rd – 2 points; 4th – 1 point. Additional points are awarded by the jockeys’ coach for presentation, professionalism, course familiarisation walk and riding ability

At the end of the Series the top three riders in the Series will receive prizes as follows kindly provided by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai. 1st - £1,500 2nd - £1,000 3rd - £500

Racing Excellence runs alongside the Jockey Coaching Programme (JCP) and is the industry accreditation for all apprentice and conditional races which run under hands and heels or training race conditions. Initially set up by The British Racing School as ‘Support for Young Jockeys’ in 2006, the BHA re-branded the scheme in 2010 as ‘Racing Excellence’

In February 2014 The British Racing School took over the management of Racing Excellence and The JCP The latter gives all Apprentices and Conditionals the opportunity to have a coach. All coaches who are all ex-Jockeys can be on hand to help with fitness, riding technique, nutrition and race reviews A coach will attend every Racing Excellence race to conduct the pre-race course walk and then will also debrief afterwards.

Race Summary: Just the 3 runners but an interesting affair all the same. NEW CENTURY sets the standard on his second in a Listed race at Ascot last month and, with the potential for more to come at this trip, he has to be considered the one to beat. However, both The Parthenon and Luther bring plenty of potential to the table, particularly the former, who’s bred in the purple.

Race Summary: SEA OF ROSES has knocked on the door at Listed/Group 3 level in the last 2 seasons and this might be the day she comes good. Low mileage 4-y-o Fakhama won’t need to step up much on the form she showed when third at York last time to play a leading role. The unbeaten Rainbows Edge is an interesting contender, while Oh So Grand will also figure if she can translate this winter’s improved AW form to turf after a break.
