WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE

A warm welcome to our late July Saturday evening race meeting.

The forecast for this evening is for pleasant weather throughout, so let’s hope that proves to be correct.

Once the racing has finished this evening we look forward to our celebrity DJ, Roman Kemp, playing his set list from the balcony overlooking the winning line.

After tonight, the track gets a short break before the two-day meeting on 14th & 15th August. Each day features both a £50,000 and £40,000 race, as the racing highlights Details of all our remaining fixtures can be found on the website - salisburyracecourse.co.uk

Thank you for coming racing, as we very much appreciate your support. We hope you have a pleasant visit, and that you will come and see us again soon. If you have any comments or observations, please do email us at office@salisburyracecourse.co.uk

Best wishes,

The Directors & Staff of Salisbury Racecourse

A guide to the horse’s recent form

RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

INVITED has been somewhat unfortunate to bump into a few useful types across his three career starts, but this is a good opportunity and he is taken to record a breakthrough success Simply Blue is officially rated just 1lb below the selection but, although respected, his form doesn’t appear to be quite as strong. Showcasing filly Avalon makes appeal on paper and she warrants a market check for the in-form Ed Walker team.

WIN: INVITED

DANGER: SIMPLY BLUE

Although MICK’S SPIRIT has yet to score on turf from five attempts, the six-year-old posted a creditable third in a class 4 contest over C&D last month. Dropped in class and from a 2lb lower mark, Conrad Allen’s charge looks more than capable of taking home the spoils Media Guest is only 3lb higher than when winning at Bath recently and he holds obvious claims, while The Defiant is most appealing of the remainder

WIN: MICK’S SPIRIT

DANGER: MEDIA GUEST

Makes Sense kept on well for second over 7f here on his debut a fortnight ago and is of real interest. However, a drop in trip doesn’t seem the most obvious route on that evidence and debutante BASIC INSTINCT is preferred. The daughter of Mehmas went for 145,000gns as a yearling and is a half-sister to several speedy types, so it would come as no surprise were she to make an immediate impact Last Outlaw and Study Up are others to note

WIN: BASIC INSTINCT

DANGER: MAKES SENSE

TEN CLUB was too keen for his own good when fading into fourth over 7f at Lingfield but, dropping back down to 6f and eased 2lb, a bold bid is expected. Moe’s Legacy can emerge as the main danger off 1lb lower than when an admirable fourth in a slightly stronger race at Newbury. The step back up in trip should help Johnny Johnson be seen to best effect and he must be of interest too.

WIN: TEN CLUB

DANGER: MOE’S LEGACY

WE’RENOTREALLYHERE was denied in the shadows of the post over 7f at Wolverhampton, before holding his form when fourth over a mile at Lingfield on Tuesday, despite racing wide throughout Off an unchanged mark and with cheekpieces reapplied, he appeals most. Cassias Comet hasn’t cut much ice in her three qualifying runs, but she catches the eye on her handicap debut Chourmo completes the shortlist, for all that the step back in trip asks a question.

WIN: WE’RENOTREALLYHERE

DANGER: CASSIAS COMET

DANCINGWITHMYSELF appeared to relish the step up to 1m2f when running out a ready winner at Ripon and, upped 4lb with her stamina drawn out further here, she should be tough to stop Connections of the well-bred Hutchence will be disappointed if he isn’t able to score in a race of this nature at some point and, sporting blinkers for the first time, he is feared most. Selectivity completes the shortlist now pitched into handicap company for the first time.

The Simon &Nerys Dutfield

MEMORIAL NOVICE STAKES

Nerys, who held atraining licence for just short of 30 years, had many successes at Salisburyfrom her base near Seaton in Devon. Herhusband, Simon, was also agreat supporterofthe racecourse through his regular Axminster Carpets race sponsorships and by having an annual box for several years. They both sadly died within afew months of each other in 2016.

Simon and Nerys were regular visitors to the course, and during her peak period of training, seldom did arace meeting pass by without Nerys having arunner They were ahugely popular and generous couple, and are greatly missed. The family now sponsor arace at Salisbury in their memory every year.It provides agreat opportunity for their children, (there are eight of them!) and grandchildren to get together.

The Dutfield’s eldest son, Harry said: “They both loved Salisbury, asitwas alocal track, which always has agreat ambiance. One of Dad’s favourite moments was when his old stalwart, Royal Axminster, finally brokehis maiden at the grand age of 8, under the yard’s amateur Anna Wallace. Mum had great affectionfor the mercurial Aoninch, who raced at Salisbury fourteen times and finally scored in August 2005, having been placed on her five previousvisits to the track. They had many great days at Salisbury and it is afitting tribute to have arace named in their memory”.
