WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE

We are very pleased to welcome you to Highclere Castle Gin Race Evening.

Our thanks to Lord and Lady Carnarvon for supporting the evening, with the three race sponsorships, and of course to our other race sponsors as well.

We are now at the halfway stage of our season and we have already seen some nice performances out on the racecourse. Congratulations to the connections of Caburn, a Salisbury winner in late June, after the horse’s final strides success in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury on Saturday. It is the second year in succession that a Salisbury winner has taken this prestigious race, after Relief Rally last year This card, which is our additional BHA fixture, has a 2-year-old Novice Stakes for colts and geldings, and one for the fillies, and there is bound to be some smart types among the runners.

There is racing here again in three days’ time, which is the last of our Saturday evening fixtures, and followed by music with celebrity presenter and DJ, Roman Kemp. Beyond that, the track gets a short break before the two-day mid-August meeting. All details of our remaining fixtures are on the back cover, and on the website: salisburyracecourse.co.uk.

Thank you for coming racing and we hope you have a pleasant visit.

Best wishes,

The Directors & Staff of Salisbury Racecourse

A guide to the horse’s recent form

RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Gilt Edge has won twice in the last month or so and has a 4lb penalty for her Chepstow triumph, although she was never a factor at the Welsh venue in between those victories so may not be entirely reliable. Letter Of The Law arrives on the back of a success at the same track, while Essme has been edging closer to the winner’s enclosure but has an underwhelming strike-rate LADY WINGALONG has held her form admirably since joining David Evans and she could be the safest option.

WIN: LADY WINGALONG

DANGER: LETTER OF THE LAW

Priapos made the best possible start to his career when getting up at Windsor and there should be plenty more to come. The form is untested, though, so perhaps a chance can be taken on SHOUT, who went into plenty of notebooks when missing the start before sticking on into fifth in a warm novice event, also at Windsor The form of Yakfeek’s debut fifth seems decent, while Redorange stepped forward to make the frame at Sandown and could do so again.

WIN: SHOUT

DANGER: PRIAPOS

DREAM VOYAGE looked in need of the experience but showed she has an engine when third on her introduction at Newmarket The runner-up didn’t do a lot for the form back at HQ last week, but Hugo Palmer’s daughter of Kingman should have a race of this nature in her Mirage Mistress is possibly the pick of the others with form, but her Kempton fifth was only satisfactory so it may pay to look to the newcomers for dangers. True Power and Tropical Heat are the most interesting of them.

WIN: DREAM VOYAGE

DANGER: TRUE POWER

Notre Maison bounced back to form in style when tried in a first-time visor at Windsor last month, but a 7lb rise for that success is likely to make things tougher With that in mind, the vote goes to the consistent BAMA LAMA, who returned to winning ways at Ffos Las a fortnight ago and is expected to back that effort up off a 2lb higher mark Katar and Under Curfew appear best of the remainder

WIN: BAMA LAMA

DANGER: NOTRE MAISON

TIMES EDITION didn’t appear to benefit from the hood being taken off at Lingfield in November With that piece of equipment reapplied on handicap debut, a repeat of her Nottingham second may suffice on her return to the track Echo Lima has produced a couple of solid efforts since her debut outing and is a player off what seems to be a workable mark, with Sheila’s Paradise and Great Acclaim others to consider

WIN: TIMES EDITION

DANGER: ECHO LIMA

Clearance has won his last two starts over hurdles at Newton Abbot and is a fascinating contender returning to the level, especially with the booking of Oisin Murphy in the saddle. However, he faces rivals who are less exposed and the vote, therefore, goes to GODSEND A winner on his penultimate start at Ripon, the extra couple of furlongs and the application of cheekpieces for the first time appear likely to yield further improvement Fair Dinkum completes the shortlist.

ROGER JOWETT 1938-2020

Roger Jowett died on 20th April 2020.

A family doctor who served the communities of Salisbury and Winterslow for 45 years as a General Practitioner.

Roger’s main recreation was his lifelong love of horses. He loved hunting and served as Treasurer & Chairman of the Wilton Hunt for many years. Racing was his other great passion and his pleasure was enhanced by his job as Medical Officer at Salisbury Racecourse for 30 years. He bred owned and trained point-to-pointers and more recently relished following his horse’s progress and successes when they were trained by Seamus Mullins.

Salisbury Racecourse was ‘dear to his heart’, he lived 500 yards from the mile start, he loved the friendly atmosphere at the course and his close contact with the whole racing community meant an enormous amount to him.

Roger was a wonderful husband, father and also friend to so many.
