WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE

Welcome to Salisbury for our traditional mid-June Sunday race meeting, which this year once again falls on Father’s Day.

We last raced on Tuesday for a busy afternoon with eighty four runners in the eight races. Oisin Murphy, a leading Salisbury jockey in most of our recent years, won the last three races of the day.

Thank you to our race sponsors for their generous contribution this afternoon. The list includes Darley, a new sponsor at Salisbury, and supporter of our feature race. It is one of four races being shown on the ITV Racing programme today, which we are delighted about.

It is the Royal meeting at Ascot next week and as always, we will watch horses that have performed well at Salisbury with great interest.

Thank you for coming racing today. We greatly appreciate the support from all our different customers, and hope that you will come back to Salisbury again soon. Finally, for all those of you who are planning to watch it tonight – get home safely, and enjoy the football!

Best wishes,

The Directors & Staff of Salisbury Racecourse

RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Just half a length separated Orbital (winner) and Never Mind Me (second) at Chelmsford last time and they are likely to be closely matched again on revised terms, but a chance is taken on OTTOMAN FORCE. The son of Land Force is related to a few speedy types but has found sprint trips too sharp of late He is edging down the weights and a step up to 7f could spark some improvement Rothay Park is also noted.

WIN: OTTOMAN FORCE

DANGER: NEVER MIND ME

TWILIGHT DANCER, a winner at Brighton on her penultimate start, was a little disappointing over the same course and distance off a 5lb raised mark last time. That effort did come in a higher grade, though, and Jonathan Portman’s filly could resume her progress now eased in class Beau Jardine likes it around here and he must be considered off a competitive rating, while others to note include Pumalin Park and Bantry.

WIN: TWILIGHT DANCER

DANGER: BEAU JARDINE

Hello Cotai pulled hard on the way down to post at Nottingham a fortnight ago, so it was to his credit that he was able to claim the runner-up spot. Should he settle better, Adam West’s charge will be a threat to all. However, the vote goes to NEVER DREAM, who made a winning handicap debut over 7f at Goodwood and looks set to improve for the step up to a mile. Beach Point heads the remainder

WIN: NEVER DREAM

DANGER: HELLO COTAI

NEW CHARTER failed to fire in the Woodcote at Epsom a couple of weeks ago, but Richard Hannon’s filly had shown plenty of promise on her debut at Newmarket and can be given another chance here. Her stablemate An Outlaw’s Grace is a noteworthy newcomer having cost 80,000 pounds and he is a half-brother to the Listed-placed Thanks Monica. Aysgarth should not be discounted, while similar comments apply to El Madar

WIN: NEW CHARTER

DANGER: AN OUTLAW’S GRACE

EJAABIYAH confirmed the promise that she displayed on debut when filling second place in a 1m2f Listed race at Newbury last month and the daughter of Frankel is hard to oppose on the back of that performance. Catch The Light took a step forward when a close third at Bath on her return to action and she edges out Song Of Appin to be best of the rest

WIN: EJAABIYAH

DANGER: CATCH THE LIGHT

On The Cards failed to justify favouritism when he finished third in this grade at Brighton last time, but he sports first-time cheekpieces now which could eke out more. However, the vote goes to CHIPS AND RICE, who hit the crossbar at Lingfield last month and goes off an unchanged mark James Fanshawe’s five-year-old is well treated and can go one place better, while God Of Fire warrants a market check

WIN: CHIPS AND RICE

DANGER: ON THE CARDS

TARITINO recorded a double in fine style over 1m6f at Bath recently and he is only 7lb higher for that triumph. Joe Tickle’s four-year-old should have no issues with his drop back in trip and he could prove very hard to beat The main danger is Vin Rouge, who hit the frame in this grade over 1m6f here last time and should go well off the same mark, while Wilderness can also get involved on her return to turf.

WIN: TARITINO DANGER: VIN ROUGE

Racing Excellence runs alongside the Jockey Coaching Programme (JCP) and is the industry accreditation for all apprentice and conditional races which run under hands and heels or training race conditions. Initially set up by The British Racing School as ‘Support for Young Jockeys’ in 2006, the BHA re-branded the scheme in 2010 as ‘Racing Excellence’

In February 2014 The British Racing School took over the management of Racing Excellence and The JCP The latter gives all Apprentices and Conditionals the opportunity to have a coach. All coaches who are all ex-Jockeys can be on hand to help with fitness, riding technique, nutrition and race reviews. A coach will attend every Racing Excellence race to conduct the pre-race course walk and then will also debrief afterwards.

The George Jeffery Memorial Handicap Stakes

George was born in Portsmouth in April 1933. He was bombed out of his home in Portsea as a child on two separate occasions, where his mother was a welder in Portsmouth Dockyard. He grew up with two brothers and two sisters, one brother being a twin. He trained as a painter and decorator spending his entire life in the building industry either working for himself or in a supervisory role for building & factory maintenance companies.

Dad married mum in 1956 and they had four boys Dad was very much a family man leaving a total of four sons, nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, with more on the way even now. He loved his holidays and travelled regularly with mum both abroad and at home.

Dad picked up his passion for the horses from his own mum. Horse racing was always part of the family weekly events. Not many weeks went past in Dad’s life where there wasn’t a small bet. Most of the family at some point would be sent to the local betting shop to place a bet or to take him to place his own bets and chat with the guys in there on the day. It was a very rare occasion that any of us went to pick up any winnings - we’re not sure there ever was!!! We remember weekend mornings with Dad, in the kitchen, flipping through the racing pages of the papers. Never big bets and never big wins. There were the regular annual visits with “the boys” to the local racing tracks including Salisbury, Fontwell, Brighton, Goodwood and Sandown. Of course, we can’t forget the coach trips to the local meetings organised by The Ship Inn in Cosham. These were big day outs always leaving a huge smile on Dad’s face regardless of how successful the day was.

Dad passed away in 2023 with his interest in horse racing taking him right to the end. He would be tickled pink to know he finally has his own race It was a lifetime sport and passion for him and has certainly been passed on to various members of the family today.

VINAKA: Following its run on 18/10/2023 it was reported that the horse was slow away

BANTRY: Following its run on 14/5/2024 it was reported that the horse was slow away

Race Summary: A case can be made for a few of these but BEAU JARDINE goes really well here and arrives at the top of his game so edges the vote Snuggle could emerge as the main danger on the back of his good recent Windsor second, although Sayifyouwill, Bantry, Pumalin Park and Twilight Dancer can all have a say too in a very open handicap.

THE H. S. LESTER MEMORIAL CHALLENGE CUP

52nd Running

H. S. Lester (HS) began his involvement in bookmaking in the 1890’s, when as a 16-year-old, he worked for his father William as a bookmaker’s runner on the street corners of the East-end of London.

He quickly progressed to making his own books and by 1905, he had made enough money to move to a much better house in Leighton Buzzard. His next house, “Sunloch”, in Banbury was paid for with the profits of betting on the eponymous winner of the 1914 Grand National.

HS worked as a foreman in a munitions factory during the first World War and earned the O.B.E. medal for his efforts. This was a special honour created for civilians and others who made a significant contribution to the war effort against the Kaiser and was transmuted into what we now know as the British Empire Medal in 1922.

He started to own horses in 1931, and formed a profitable association with the trainer George Todd, whom he helped buy the stables Manton. Both H S and Todd believed that that there was no point in owning racehorses unless money could be made from betting. They had some success and H S won over 100 races including the Brighton Cup, the Chester Cup, and the Queen Elizabeth Cup at Lingfield.

As the most accomplished risk taker in the family, H.S. would go to considerable lengths to secure the best odds when betting. He is reputed to have driven from Banbury to Brighton and back as he was convinced that he could get better odds on the course in person. The story goes, he drove his Rolls Royce to the course, secured the odds he was looking for, watched the horse come home first, collected his winnings, and drove straight back to Banbury. Petrol must have been a great deal cheaper then!

HS (left in bowler hat) watching Lester Pigott after winning his first Derby on Never Say Die in 1954

HS gradually increased his ambitions and eventually reached the pinnacle of British flat racing by entering a horse in the 1953 Derby. Unfortunately this proved to be one of his less successful ventures, but you can bet he had some smart money bets placed on the day!

Following his death, his surviving sons founded the H. S. LESTER MEMORIAL CHALLENGE CUP to be run at Salisbury, one of his and George Todd’s favourite racecourses

This year we welcome the 4th generation of the family in to the sponsorship of the race, James Lester, the great-great-grandson of HS

We hope that all your winners today are at suitably attractive odds
