Welcome to Salisbury for the final race meeting of the 2023 season – Radcliffe & Co Season Finale.
Despite the loss of a Sunday fixture back in early May, it has been a good season out on the racecourse. Highlights include, Relief Rally beating Juniper Berries in mid-May (both now Group race winners); an Aidan O’Brien winner at the beginning of September; a high class renewal of the Listed Cathedral Stakes in its new late May slot; and two dead-heatsincluding for the Group 3 Tattersalls Sovereign Stakes, our main race of the year We have, without question, had some very nice 2 year olds at Salisbury this year, and as always, we will follow their progress with interest. We often see plenty of young horses with great potential at this fixture as well.
Weatherwise, we remember our racing season as having a cold start, only really improving from mid-May onwards. June was a very warm and settled month, but the rest of the summer has been decidedly mixed. Despite a very windy Ladies’ Evening in mid-July, we have been fortunate that all of our race meetings have taken place in dry and pleasant weather The forecast for today is also reasonable, and should that prove to be correct, it will finish the season off nicely.
The sincerest of thanks from the racecourse directors and staff for supporting Salisbury during the course of this season. We very much look forward to welcoming you back in early May 2024.
Best wishes

17 A guide to the horse’s recent form
STAR RATING EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
DID YOU KNOW: Ralph Beckett won both divisions of the Byerley Stud British EBF Novice
Stakes on this card 12 months ago and the local handler bids to repeat the dose today, with La Pasionaria at 1.52 and Sea The Thunder in the 2.25.
RACE ONE
God's Window sets the standard following his debut win at Doncaster last month, but he may struggle to give 6lb to HOUSTONN. Richard Hannon's colt took a big step forward when a short-head second over C&D four weeks ago and he pulled well clear of the third and fourth, who have both won subsequently Matsuri cost 700,000gns as a yearling and has to be of interest on his racecourse bow, while La Pasionaria and Hosaamm are other noteworthy newcomers.
WIN: HOUSTONN
RACE TWO
DANGER:GOD'SWINDOW
Hand Of God has displayed plenty of promise on both of his previous starts and it would be no surprise to see him go well once again. That said, a chance can be taken with MACH TEN, who lacks race experience but he cost 150,000gns as a yearling and is closely related to plenty of winners. Joycean Way and Chequers Court are others with valid form claims, while any market support for Morawig would have to be noted.
WIN: MACH TEN
RACE THREE
DANGER: HAND OF GOD
FINBAR FUREY confirmed the promise that he displayed on debut when filling third place over 6f at Haydock a month ago and the step up in trip should only help his chances here. Qirat is an obvious threat following his win at Kempton in August but a 6lb penalty for that success is an obvious concern. Inversionisahalf-sistertotheUSGrade1winnerWhitebeamandisarguablythepickofthenewcomers, although No Nay Sul and Secret Satire should not be underestimated.
WIN: FINBAR FUREY
RACE FOUR
DANGER: QIRAT
Ralph Beckett has enjoyed an exceptional campaign with his juveniles and INDELIBLE could provide him with further success The standard set by those with previous experience is far from daunting and the Shamardal filly, who is a half-sister to four winners, might not have to be anything special to strike on her debut Waistcoat makes plenty of appeal on paper and must enter calculations, along with both Flashy Apache and Viridian.
WIN: INDELIBLE
DANGER: WAISTCOAT
Maximum Impact has struggled in Pattern company on his last two starts but must be respected down in class, although the vote goes to PALMAR BAY. He has not been seen since defeating subsequent July Stakes winner Jasour here over 5f in May, but further improvement might be enough to see him produce a winning return. Recent Ffos Las victor Jump Jet must enter the reckoning, along with C&D scorer Solar Aclaim.
WIN: PALMAR BAY
DANGER: MAXIMUM IMPACT
Clive Cox has taken the previous two renewals of this contest and it might pay to side with his KATEY KONTENT today. She was sixth in the Queen Mary as a juvenile and has been running well at a higher level than this in 2023. The Havana Grey filly was unfortunate not to have finished closer at Yarmouth last month, when she was denied a clear run, and this drop in class could see her regain the winning thread. Stablemate Bonny Angel should not be underestimated, while Justcallmepete can also play a leading role.
WIN: KATEY KONTENT
DANGER: BONNY ANGEL
Bint Al Daar will be going up 3lb for future contests after her head second at Nottingham last time out and she is well worth another try at a mile and a quarter here. Narrow preference is for KARAKOY, who disappointed at Kempton off 1lb higher on her handicap debut but she looks worth another chance back up to the trip she won with ease over at Chepstow in June. Wind Your Neck In is another to consider if the first-time visor has a positive effect
WIN: KARAKOY
RACE EIGHT
DANGER: BINT AL DAAR
Wilderness is the one C&D winner in this field after he scored off 2lb higher in July 2022, but 11 losing races since is not a positive and a place may be the best he can hope for. African Star was a shock 80/1 winner at Lingfield in August and wasn't disgraced when fifth at Newbury last time, so he may go well if he gets the trip, but SAILING ON could be the one to side with. Second at Yarmouth over this distance last month, if he learns to settle better then he could prove too good for these.
WIN: SAILING ON
DANGER: AFRICAN STAR

Houstonn is the obvious threat having only just failed to peg back the odds-on favourite at Salisbury, with Matsuri making the most appeal of the newcomers.

Race Summary: QIRAT fully confirmed debut promise when running out an impressive winner of a Kempton novice 6 weeks ago and, with the prospect of more to come from Ralph Beckett’s well-bred colt, he’s fancied to defy a penalty and score again. Finbar Furey is going the right way and is a danger tackling 7f for the first time, along with Point Given. Inversion may emerge best of the newcomers.

In loving memory of Colin Ponting, who bravely crossed the finish line of life on February 3rd, 2023. A true racing aficionado, he held Salisbury racecourse dear to his heart, forever in pursuit of those elusive free entry badges!
In his honour, we present the “Colin Ponting Memorial Handicap Stakes,” where horses race with the same spirited tenacity as Colin’s hunt for freebies. While he never owned a racehorse himself, his incredible humour and spirit made him a winner in life’s grand race.
Today, we tip our hats to a man who lived life to the full and raced through it all with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a huge zest for life. He was one of a kind.
Colin, you will forever reign in the winner’s circle of our hearts and we cherish our memories of going racing with you.
You will never be forgotten.

Race Summary: The vote goes to TIRIAC, who finally reproduced something akin to his 2-y-o form when finding just one too good at Goodwood last week and he is appealing off the same mark and with conditions in his favour Haymaker wasn’t disgraced in a valuable handicap at the Doncaster St Leger meeting and he is feared most, while Lord Uhtred could be a threat if able to build on his latest effort and Under The Twilight, who is 2-2 here, also enters calculations.

SIXTH RACE
At this, our last meeting of 2023, we pay tribute to jockey Frankie Dettori, who is currently making his final appearances at racecourses around the world prior to his retirement. His 53rd birthday is approaching in December.
Frankie has been at the top of his profession for most of his career, which has spanned 37 years. He has ridden over 3,360 winners in Britain alone, including 23 classics, topped and tailed by the Oaks winners Balanchine in 1994 and Soul Sister this year. He won three jockeys’ titles, in 1994, 1995 and 2004.
Dettori’s father Gianfranco, the Italian champion jockey 13 times, sent Frankie to this country in 1985, aged fourteen to work for Luca Cumani. He rode his very first winner, while back in Turin a year later, and his first in the UK on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood, in 1987. His breakthrough year was 1989, when he was crowned champion apprentice, riding 75 winners that season, which included his first here at Salisbury on 4th October 1989 - a two-year-old Maiden Stakes on the Cumani-trained El Paso, the 4/5 favourite.
Since then, his notable Salisbury successes included Belenus in the 2006 Group 3 Sovereign Stakes for Godolphin (pictured), for whom he rode for eighteen years; three winners of the Stonehenge Stakes – Assaaf in 2001, Perfectperformance in 2004 (who won the Royal Lodge Stakes next time out), and Streets Ahead in 2006. He also won the Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes on Wimple and Nyramba, in 2002 and 2003 respectively.
His 83rd and final winner at Salisbury was on 20th April 2022, when he came for just one ride and duly steered the Juddmonte owned Samburu to victory for John & Thady Gosden.
