Welcome to our third September fixture, and the last of our evening race meetings.
Our feature race tonight is the Weatherbys sponsored Persian Punch Conditions Stakes, a race won by subsequent top stayers Trueshan and Quickthorn in recent years. We didn’t stage the race in 2022, as the meeting was cancelled, being the day after the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
After today, the track gets a bit of a break and will be prepared for our final race meeting of 2023, in just under three weeks’ time, on Thursday 5th October. It always features plenty of promising two year olds, so please do join us if you can.
Many thanks from the directors and staff for coming racing at Salisbury today. We hope you have an enjoyable visit.
Best wishes
Jeremy Martin Executive Director & Clerk ofthe Course

STAR RATING EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
DID YOU KNOW: Hugo Palmer boasts an excellent 32% strike-rate at this venue and Under The Sun is his only representative today. The Golden Horn colt will find the Skytree Restricted Novice Stakes (4.20) less competitive than his most recent assignment
UNDER THE SUN is presented with a good opportunity to open his account at the fourth time of asking. This is easier than the always-informative Convivial he contested at York last month and considering he was a well-supported favourite that day, his connections can be very hopeful now his sights are lowered. Show Biz Kid and Wonder appeal most of the others with previous experience. Portsmouth, a half-brother to the classy Chichester, catches the eye from the newcomers.
WIN: UNDER THE SUN
DANGER: SHOW BIZ KID
Much depends on how Mitwaa breaks from the stalls, but he has the ability to go well at this level and is respected accordingly However, he has been raised 3lb after being run out of things near the finish at Newbury last time and is taken on with SHE WORE NO JEWELS, who was just a half-length away in third that day. On marginally better terms, Clive Cox's filly can reverse the form. Nursery debutants Dufresne and Sub Thirteen are also considered.
WIN: SHE WORE NO JEWELS
DANGER: MITWAA
Lahina Bay, Warminster and Fragrance are the only ones with any previous winning form and each commands respect However, KATAR appeals as one who is potentially well handicapped and, with a tongue-tie and cheekpieces combination tried for the first time, Richard Ford's experienced three-yearold can provide a bit of value off a 3lb lower mark than when he was a close second to Lahina Bay (now 7lb worse off) over C&D in June.
WIN: KATAR
DANGER: LAHINA BAY
This can go the way of CORINTHIA KNIGHT, who bounced back to form with a strong runnerup effort at Chepstow last time out and should be well suited by the prevailing fast ground. The veteran has dropped 14lb below his last winning mark and he may have too much for the in-form Fact Or Fable and On Edge, who did it well over the minimum trip at Chepstow last week
WIN: CORINTHIA KNIGHT
DANGER: FACT OR FABLE
A small but select field, and last year's Ebor winner TRAWLERMAN surely sets the standard on both his rating and form. The Gosdens' five-year-old has not been in action domestically since a cracking third behind Trueshan and Coltrane on British Champions Day last October, but he could be a class apart. Ocean Wind made a pleasing return from the sidelines but has since struggled in the Goodwood Cup and Ebor Berkshire Rocco was well ahead of him on the Knavesmire and should be in the mix if building on that
WIN: TRAWLERMAN
DANGER: BERKSHIRE ROCCO
SCENIC may be a maiden after seven attempts, but the form of her Listed third at York on her penultimate start stands out in this winnable contest. The booking of James Doyle can only aid her cause and her experience and recent match practice should help her to see off Eleanor Cross, who is bound to improve for an encouraging introduction at Nottingham which, admittedly, came a year ago Debut Chelmsford winner Al Anoud can also have a say in proceedings
WIN: SCENIC
DANGER: ELEANOR CROSS

A race has been run in Andy’s memory, since he passed away in 2020 We are very sad to be adding Leo’s name this year Leo, who passed away in February, was a keen and long standing supporter of Salisbury Racecourse
Andy and Leo formed a friendship which started in the 1980’s and continued throughout their lives. They shared a passion for horse racing and football. Both men showed unstinting dedication and support to local football at Bemerton Heath Harlequins for over 40 years. Andy was Club Secretary, and Leo had many roles, including Vice Chairman, quiz master, and Play Your Cards Right host.
They enjoyed many happy days on the racecourse, both at Salisbury and further afield. Although, they had different approaches on-course Andy would be found in the betting ring, with a close eye on market moves and hunting the best price for his fancy. Leo followed his usual routine in life, by talking to everyone and anyone He was always interested to know more about whoever he met, and to hear their life story.
Last year, Leo thoroughly enjoyed meeting Brough Scott, on one of his infamous morning walks, when on a trip with friends to York racecourse
Leo was in awe of Andy’s great knowledge of the horse racing industry, and was always keen to learn as much as he could.
As like most racegoers, the close friends had their favourite trainers. Andy was a fan of the Roger Charlton stable, and always followed his runners, especially on Lockinge Day at Newbury Leo had a soft spot for Amanda Perrett’s stable and it was rare that he didn’t back her runners wherever they raced.
Family and friends are in attendance this evening to remember Andy and Leo. Both men are very sadly missed, and will always be in our hearts.

He may have most to fear from Gatwick Kitten, who shouldn’t be judged too harshly on his latest effort, prior to which he was in good form. Corinthia Knight and Moorgate both make each-way appeal.

This year the Weatherbys Stallion Book celebrates it’s 40th year and we are once again proud to sponsor the Persian Punch Conditions Stakes at Salisbury. Horn was a real burgeoning star in the staying division in 2022. In a first-time hood, Trawlerman landed a competitive handicap at the Goodwood Festival over this trip before landing the lucrative Ebor Handicap from a mark of 101 under an enterprising ride from Frankie Dettori.
