Welcome to Salisbury for the most valuable race meeting of our 2023 season. This year’s card looks particularly good in terms of overall quality. The Irish Thoroughbred Marketing sponsored Dick Poole Fillies’ Group 3 race, is again very well supported, and we also welcome a rare Aidan O’Brien runner, in our second race. It is eighteen years since Aidan sent Dylan Thomas and Arabian Prince to finish a close second and third in the Autumn Stakes, which we staged for an at-the-time closed Ascot Our sincerest thanks to ITM, and indeed to all our sponsors, for their generous support today. Our next racing at Salisbury is on Friday 15th September and beyond that, Thursday 5th October will bring the season to a close.
The directors and staff wish you a pleasant and successful afternoon.
Best wishes

17 A guide to the horse’s recent form
STAR RATING EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
DID YOU KNOW: Hector Crouch has a 20% strike-rate (19-93) at Salisbury over the last five years, yielding a level stakes profit of £58.47, and he rides Pick Your Battles (2.40) and Queen Of Mougins (3.40) this afternoon.
RACE ONE
Plenty of chances in this contest with ANGLO SAXSON making most appeal. Patrick Owens' charge showed a willing attitude when scoring over course and distance last time and a repeat of that effort would see him take plenty of beating. The six-year-old will have to defy a 4lb rise in the ratings, but that could prove to be lenient Uncle Dick scored over 1m at Brighton recently, while Racing Demon shouldn't be far away
WIN: ANGLO SAXSON
RACE TWO
DANGER: UNCLE DICK
Immediately the eye is drawn to CAMBRIDGE, who represents the powerful combination of Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore. The son of Dubawi made an eye-catching start to his career when third over the extended 7f at Roscommon a couple of weeks ago and this looks like a good opportunity to get his head in front at the second time of asking. City Burglar is feared most after a close second over 1m at Newbury last time, while Boyfriend is also noted.
WIN: CAMBRIDGE
RACE THREE
DANGER: CITY BURGLAR
Some promising sorts line up in this contest with slight preference for SKELLET, who made a pleasing start to her career when fourth over 7f at Sandown last month. Ralph Beckett's charge was only beaten a length on that occasion and she should only improve for the experience. Serene Seraph looks to be the biggest danger after running with credit when third over an extended 6f at Doncaster in June and that form has worked out very well, while Glitterella heads the remainder
WIN: SKELLET
RACE FOUR
DANGER: SERENE SERAPH
Regal Reality added another Group success to his CV when winning the Diomed at Epsom in June and the gelded son of Intello, a former winner of this contest in 2020, merits respect under his penalty. Chichester confirmed his well being with a comfortable victory at Listed level last time and is another to consider, though MIGHTY ULYSSES edges preference. The Gosdens' charge returned from an absence with a decent fifth in the Summer Mile at Ascot, but he can take a step forward in first-time cheekpieces
WIN: MIGHTY ULYSSES
RACE FIVE
DANGER: REGAL REALITY
This could go the way of AL SIMMO, who is now rated just 2lb higher than when only narrowly denied over this distance at York on her penultimate outing. The six-year-old is fancied to bounce back from her effort in the Group 3 Summer Stakes when last seen in July and she can get the better of The Big Board, who finished a creditable fourth at York last month. Jumbeau is another to bear in mind stepping up in class
WIN: AL SIMMO
DANGER: THE BIG BOARD
Sly Madam is a course and distance winner but may have to settle for a place as she is 4lb above her last winning mark GARDEN ROUTE was an easy winner at Windsor over this trip in June before finding softer ground and 1m2f beyond him at Goodwood last time. Dropped in both class and trip in first-time cheekpieces, the son of Galileo could well bounce back to his best, with Resolute Man the likeliest to follow him home on his second start following a gelding operation.
WIN: GARDEN ROUTE
DANGER: RESOLUTE MAN
There may be more to come from Alice Knyvet after she got off the mark at Leicester recently, but others may improve past her here. Ryan Moore rode LE MANS into second over 7f at Kempton last month and is back on board as the daughter of Kodiac steps up in trip If Richard Hannon's filly sees out the distance, then she may have more to offer on just her third start. Tudor may be happier at this trip and is another to consider seriously

The five race Racing Excellence Apprentice Series at Salisbury is generously sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai. It is specifically designed to assist the education and training of new and inexperienced jockeys
The first race in the Series on 18th May was won by Liam Wright on the Malcolm Saunders trained Redredrobin at 7-2. The second race in the Series on 18th June was won by Alex Jary on the Daniel & Claire Kubler trained Moondial at 7-2. The third race in the Series on 15th July was won by Shariq Mohd on the Rachel Cook & John Bridger trained Beau Jardine at 5-1. The fourth race in the Series on 16th August was won by Olivia Tubb on the Jonathan Portman trained Twilight Dancer at 2-1 fav Today’s race is the final race of the Series.
A points system operates throughout the Series and is allocated as follows:
1st – 5 points; 2nd – 3 points; 3rd – 2 points; 4th – 1 point
Additional points are awarded by the jockeys’ coach for presentation, professionalism, course familiarisation walk and riding ability. At the end of the Series the top three riders in the Series will receive prizes as follows, kindly provided by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.
1st - £1,500 2nd - £1,000 3rd - £500
The current scores are as follows:
Racing Excellence runs alongside the Jockey Coaching Programme (JCP) and is the industry accreditation for all apprentice and conditional races which run under hands and heels or training race conditions. Initially set up by The British Racing School as ‘Support for Young Jockeys’ in 2006, the BHA re-branded the scheme in 2010 as ‘Racing Excellence’
In February 2014 The British Racing School took over the management of Racing Excellence and The JCP The latter gives all Apprentices and Conditionals the opportunity to have a coach. All coaches who are all ex-Jockeys can be on hand to help with fitness, riding technique, nutrition and race reviews A coach will attend every Racing Excellence race to conduct the pre-race course walk and then will also debrief afterwards.
I am particularly pleased to continue our sponsorship of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai - Racing Excellence Apprentice Handicap Series here at Salisbury Racecourse for the 2023 season.
This is a very unique series which will help mould up and coming riders in so many ways. Discipline and respect are the foundation of this series and with the guidance of George Baker, it will be of enormous benefit to the next generation of jockeys into the future.
Salisbury is a racecourse close to my heart as when I was living in the UK as a young man, I visited the track on many occasions and hold some wonderful memories of the venue.
Our investment into this series compliments our other Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai sponsorships across the UK in Newmarket and York.
Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai would like to offer our congratulations to the Board and Management at Salisbury Racecourse on this terrific initiative and wish all those who participate, every success as this series plays out over the summer months.

PLAY SMARTER
Bob McCreery was twice Champion Amateur rider with many notable winners on the flat and over jumps. He later became a highly successful breeder and owner and it is appropriate that the Bob McCreery Memorial Stakes is run today at Salisbury exactly six years after Anna Nerium, sporting his colours, burst through the field to land the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes under Tom Marquand.
McCreery soon became highly influential in the bloodstock world with the formation of the Injured Jockeys Fund, the European Breeders’ Fund (with the help of Peter Willett, Vincent O’Brien and Alec Head) and was a key Chairman of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. Always approachable and friendly, he helped and encouraged many young people looking for a career in the racing and breeding industries.
He developed the Moreton Paddox Stud in Warwickshire before moving to Stowell Hill in Somerset, not far from Wincanton racecourse. His early winners as a breeder included High Top (2,000 Guineas), Old Vic (Irish Derby & French Derby), Anshan, Electric and Gale Force Ten, who all became successful stallions.
More recent Group & Stakes winners include the unbeaten Piping Rock, Middle Club and Billesdon Bess, while the current stars include Billesdon Brook (6 wins, £544.895, incl. 1,000 Guineas and Oak Tree Stakes) and Anna Nerium (5 wins, £178,861, incl Princess Elizabeth Stakes, Epsom). All these have been trained by Richard Hannon Snr & Jnr, leading trainers at Salisbury.

Race Summary: Plenty of interesting newcomers on show but SERENE SERAPH produced a promising first effort when third in a Doncaster maiden back in June and, with improvement on the cards, she can go a couple of places better at the expense of Skellet, who shaped very well having been supported in the betting on debut at Sandown recently. Spinto Soprano and Westray both look debutantes to note so they round off the shortlist.

Race Summary: GARDEN ROUTE may have found his latest Goodwood assignment coming too soon in his development but he’d previously looked a useful prospect when making all on return at Windsor so, back in calmer waters/returned to quicker ground, he gets the nod to come out on top for his leading stable. Windsor-scorer Just Bring It and Resolute Man can give the selection most to think about.
