FRONT COVER IMAGE: MIGHT ULYSSES (left) and EMBESTO about to dead-heat in Salisbury’s big race of the year - the £70,000 Tattersalls Sovereign Stakes (Group 3), two weeks ago.
Jockeys Oisin Murphy and David Egan congratulate each other on the shared victory.

OPPOSITE IMAGE: MISTRAL STAAR wins the £50,000 1 mile 4 furlongs handicap for fillies and mares
Welcome to Salisbury for the first of our three September race meetings. We last raced just over two weeks ago and saw a fantastic finish to our feature race of the season, with Mighty Ulysses and Embesto dead-heating in the Tattersalls Sovereign Stakes. Incredibly, it was the second dead-heat at Salisbury in just seven days, with the last one prior to that, coming over four years ago
After the racing has finished this evening, we have the excellent ‘Coldplace’, a Coldplay tribute band, live on stage, followed by popular hits from the decades. Please do stay with us and enjoy the music.
The next racing at Salisbury is on Thursday afternoon. It is collectively our most valuable race day of the season with the highlight being a Group 3 race for 2 year old fillies – the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing sponsored Dick Poole Stakes. Thank you for coming racing. All the team here wish you a successful and enjoyable visit.
Best wishes

17 A guide to the horse’s recent form
STAR RATING EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
DID YOU KNOW: Roger Varian has a 27% strike-rate (21-78) at Salisbury over the last five years and the Newmarket-based trainer's only runner this evening is Debora's Dream at 6.13.
LUNA MAGIC has won the last two renewals of this race and, off 2lb lower than last year's success, Archie Watson's mare has every chance of completing the hat-trick despite being well held on her last three starts Inclement Weather is an obvious threat to the selection following her narrow defeat over course and distance in July, while Havana Goldrush is the pick of the remainder
WIN: LUNA MAGIC
DANGER: INCLEMENTWEATHER
This might prove to be a straightforward task for LEXINGTON BELLE, who is 10lb well in here following her narrow defeat in a valuable 7f nursery at York last week Quickfire is unexposed at this trip and appears to be the biggest threat to the selection on these terms, while Royal Hussar and Tasmanian Legend are both open to improvement on their nursery debuts
WIN: LEXINGTON BELLE
DANGER: QUICKFIRE
PRESSURE'S ON is developing nicely and reverting to 6f on turf could unlock further improvement from the Ed Dunlop-trained colt The son of Land Force sets a reasonable standard with a mark of 77 and returning to novice company could be a profitable move Eighth Army and Assembly Call are noteworthy debutants to monitor in the betting, while Debora's Dream is another who merits a place on the shortlist.
WIN: PRESSURE'S ON
DANGER: EIGHTH ARMY
IMPERIOUSITY finished with a wet sail when just denied over 5f at Goodwood and this looks like a good opportunity to go one better. Amanda Perrett's charge was only beaten a nose on that occasion and is arguably the one to beat off the same mark The Thames Boatman should be on the scene off a dangerous mark, while Thismydream and Jax Edge are also worthy of consideration.
WIN: IMPERIOUSITY
DANGER:THETHAMESBOATMAN
A competitive event but a chance is taken on DREAM OF MISCHIEF, who was a winner over 1m at Windsor on his penultimate start. He then struggled in a deep race at Goodwood, but the gelding can return to form in these slightly calmer waters. Last-time-out winner Playupskyblues should also offer a bold bid raised just 3lb after that success over 1m at Kempton, while Golspie and Get Stuck In head the remainder
WIN: DREAM OF MISCHIEF
DANGER: PLAYUPSKYBLUES
The consistent Capone has been knocking on the door of late and is likely to be in the mix once again. That said, he has been raised a further 3lb for his second over 2m at Nottingham last time and may be susceptible to some better treated rivals, such as CHARLES ST Fergal O'Brien's charge has been running over timber of late and he returns to the Flat on a mark which can be exploited. Captain Kane completes the shortlist.
WIN: CHARLES ST
DANGER: CAPONE

DECLARED RUNNERS 11 2022: HEROISM (IRE) 2 9 7 John Fahy 13-2 (Clive Cox) 12 ran
Raceform Median Time: 1 min 16.50 secs
Tongue Strap worn first time by No 6. Running for the first time since Gelding No 5.
Betting Forecast: 3-1 Debora’s Dream (IRE), 10-3 Pressure’s On (FR), 11-2 Eighth Army (GB), 7-1 Le Geyt (IRE), 8-1 Assembly Call (IRE), 11-1 Solar Aclaim (IRE), 22-1 Darroch (GB), 33-1 Dashing Harry (GB), 66-1 Glamorous Joy (GB), 100-1 Newfangled (IRE), Showpeace (GB)
Race Summary: The Newbury novice DEBORA’S DREAM’s finish on debut in July worked out pretty well and given he looked short on know-how that day, a much-improved display looks on the cards. He’s therefore preferred in favour of the standard-setting colt Pressure’s On, with Eighth Army a newcomer of some interest.

Race Summary: CAPONE found only an improving 3-y-o too good in a deeper handicap than this at Nottingham 17 days ago and with that performance confirming he’s in top form, he could be the answer. Lady Percival’s belated reappearance was a very good one so she demands respect, along with Spritzin’ at the foot of the weights.
