WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE

Welcome to the second day of our two-day August meeting, featuring Salisbury’s feature race of the season, the £70,000 Tattersalls Sovereign Stakes, Group 3.

We are very grateful to Tattersalls for sponsoring this race for a third time. Not only is their financial support very much appreciated, Salisbury is also very proud to have such a significant industry name associated with our big race. Our thanks too, to each of our other sponsors, all of whom are long-standing contributors.

The next racing is just over two weeks away on Friday 1st September, when there will be a Coldplay tribute band on stage after the evening racing.

Beyond that, Thursday 7th September, is another of our top days, featuring the Group 3 ITM Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes.

Thank you again for joining us today and we look forward to seeing you at Salisbury again soon.

Best wishes

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

TODAY’S TIPS

DID YOU KNOW: William Haggas has won two of the past four renewals of the British EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap (4:40) and today the Newmarket handler bids to extend that fine record with Truthful.

RACE ONE

FALLING FOR YOU made a pleasing start to her racing career when finishing a far from disgraced fourth over 6f at Windsor last month. She shaped as though an extra furlong would aid her cause and, with progression likely, gets the vote at the main expense of the grade-dropping Romanova, who failed to get involved in Listed company at Sandown on her debut The unraced Nothing To Fear is related to a few smart types and completes the shortlist.

WIN: FALLING FOR YOU

RACE TWO

DANGER: ROMANOVA

A case can be made for several of these, but it is hard to oppose WELLEEF, who kept on well to score by two and a quarter lengths on his racecourse bow over this trip at Leicester. He does have to shoulder a 7lb penalty for that success, so Crown Dreams can give him plenty to think about having filled the runner-up spot on both career starts Solar Portrait warrants a market check on his debut and is another to consider

WIN: WELLEEF

RACE THREE

DANGER: CROWN DREAMS

BOOM BOOM POW recorded a staying-on success over 7f at Kempton in June and a reproduction of that effort can see her firmly in the picture. She is rated 7lb higher for that success but, with the potential for more to come, can get the better of Eye Of The Water, who has to shoulder top-weight after a pleasing third at Bath most recently The unexposed Kalamunda completes the shortlist.

WIN: BOOM BOOM POW

RACE FOUR

DANGER: EYE OF THE WATER

Regal Reality added another Group success to his CV when winning the Diomed at Epsom in June and the gelded son of Intello, a former winner of this contest in 2020, merits respect under his penalty. Chichester confirmed his well being with a comfortable victory at Listed level last time and is another to consider, though MIGHTY ULYSSES edges preference. The Gosdens' charge returned from an absence with a decent fifth in the Summer Mile at Ascot, but he can take a step forward in first-time cheekpieces

WIN: MIGHTY ULYSSES

RACE FIVE

DANGER: REGAL REALITY

Having opened her account at Newcastle in February, QUEEN REGENT lost nothing in defeat when filling the runner-up spot under a penalty at Wolverhampton last month. A mark of 89 wouldn't appear to be a gift, but there is enough on the dam's side to suggest this step up in trip can suit, and she is open to more improvement than most. Truthful's unbeaten record came unstuck in a Listed contest at Newmarket, but she is of interest on handicap debut, while Mistral Star is also noted.

WIN: QUEEN REGENT

RACE SIX

DANGER: TRUTHFUL

MANTOOG showed plenty across her three runs to date, perhaps most notably when narrowly denied by the now 90-rated Truthful (engaged to run in the 4.40) over C&D in May. It looked another decent novice in which she competed at Chelmsford last time, and the handicapper might have underestimated her with an opening mark of 77 Monty Bay hit the frame over 1m at York last month and he is an obvious candidate upped in trip Malka can chase them home.

WIN: MANTOOG

DANGER: MONTY BAY

Race Summary: Having been thrown in at listed level for her debut at Sandown 3 weeks ago, ROMANOVA unsurprisingly found things all too tough, but sure to have derived plenty from that initial effort, Ollie Sangster’s filly is fancied to go close in much calmer waters. Newcomer Sky Blaze ticks plenty of boxes so she could emerge as the main threat, with Falling For You and La Sonnambula another couple to consider

Kevin's name was added to the race title in 2012. Kevin was also part of the same circle of friends as Pat and as a lifelong, dedicated Stoke fan, Kevin was excitedly looking forward to seeing his beloved Stoke at Wembley in the 2011 FA Cup Final. Cruelly, Kevin suffered a heart attack hours before kick-off and was admitted to hospital rather than heading to Wembley. After major surgery and dedicated care Kevin was able to return home to Shetland in July but sadly passed away the following month. Kevin's ashes are buried in the pitch at Stoke Cit's Bet 365 Stadium.

Kevin's family and fiends are here today to remember a loving husband, a devoted son, a loyal brother and a very close dear friend.
