FRONT COVER IMAGE: The 2yo DRAGON LEADER (white cap) is two out of two, both at Salisbury, in Div 2 of the colts & geldings Novice Stakes last Thursday evening.
ABOVE IMAGE: JUBILEE WALK (centre) under Cieren Fallon, wins by a nose, and a neck, in Div 1.
OPPOSITE IMAGE: YEAH NAH is successful in Div 1 of the 2yo fillies Novice Stakes – the second of three wins on the night for trainer Richard Hannon.
Welcome to the first day of our two-day August meeting, which features two Listed races.
We are very grateful to the Trustees of the British European Breeders’ Fund and the Governors of the Irish EBF for their generous support, of the Upavon Stakes and Stonehenge Stakes respectively. Both races have produced very smart winners in the past, particularly the Upavon which saw the 2022 ‘Arc’ winner Alpinista successful, behind closed doors, in 2020.
We last raced on Thursday evening for an eight race card, with five of them having very close finishes, including one dead heat. There was a winning debut for amateur rider Ben Pollard in the Carnarvon Cup; a win for principal sponsor Lord Carnarvon with his horse Yellow Lion, and a comfortable win for Shadwell owned filly Raqiya.
Tomorrow is our big race of the year, the £70,000 Tattersalls Sovereign Stakes, a Group 3 contest for colts and geldings over the distance of one mile. I am sure that many of you here today will be back with us to see it.
The directors and staff wish you a successful and enjoyable afternoon.
Best wishes

17 A guide to the horse’s recent form
STAR RATING EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
DID YOU KNOW: The Gosden team has used the British EBF 40th Anniversary Upavon Fillies' Stakes (4.30) as a springboard to Group-race glory for Journey and Fanny Logan in recent years and can do so again with Running Lion, who hasn't had the best of experiences in the English and French Oaks.
RACE ONE
Abbey's Dream and TWILIGHT DANCER are both allotted a weight-for-age allowance and, while the former has shown a good level of ability on the all-weather, the latter is the more proven on turf and Jonathan Portman's filly looks the one to side with here. The selection has improved since being stepped up to 7f and she has the scope to build on what has been a sequence of decent efforts of late.
WIN: TWILIGHT DANCER
RACE TWO
DANGER:ABBEY'SDREAM
MISTER SKETCH is built for speed on his dam's side of the pedigree and, having made a highly encouraging debut at Newbury last month, he could be hard to beat if taking a step forward here. Avoriaz is a half-brother to six winners and looks the most appealing of the newcomers, although Sedgemoor is another to note in the betting as he represents a team enjoying a solid season with their juveniles
WIN: MISTER SKETCH
RACE THREE
DANGER: AVORIAZ
This is potentially the deeper of the two divisions of this race, with Pianoforte, Flavour Maker and Ten Bob Tony all looking the part on paper, and the betting can be informative where that trio is concerned. However, FINBAR FUREY just shades preference given he is a full-brother to Pennine Hills, a 6f winner on debut as a juvenile, and Grizzel, a Grade 3-winning miler in Canada. The added bonus is his in-form yard's appealing strike-rate with their two-year-olds this season.
WIN: FINBAR FUREY
DANGER: PIANOFORTE
ARABIAN CROWN built on his eye-catching third at Sandown in early July with a ready success at the same venue later in the month. Charlie Appleby's colt could prove tough to beat if reproducing that level of performance and gets the vote There was plenty to like about Arabic Legend's debut triumph at Newmarket last month and the Dubawi colt can't be taken lightly, while Son ran well enough in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood recently to suggest he can get involved here too.
WIN: ARABIAN CROWN
DANGER: ARABIC LEGEND
LANDLORDTOTHESTARS appeared freshened up by a break when recording a second-placed effort at Newmarket last month and a 2lb rise may not be enough to prevent James Evans' gelding from going one place better. Paco's Pride has been running with credit at a similar level of late and should make her presence felt once more, while Racing Demon merits respect now returned to the C&D of his last success
WIN: LANDLORDTOTHESTARS
DANGER:PACO'SPRIDE
RUNNING LION has scored in four of her last five outings, including when bolting up in Listed company at Newmarket on her penultimate run in May. She contested much deeper waters in France last time out and, although that looked a step too far, she is fancied to bounce back to winning form at this level. Ameynah remains unexposed and was not disgraced when finishing fourth in the Valiant Stakes at Ascot last month, so she gets the danger vote ahead of State Occasion.
WIN: RUNNING LION
DANGER: AMEYNAH
Always Fearless recorded a staying-on success over a mile at this track last Thursday and is expected to be thereabouts if anywhere near that form. However, he does have to shoulder a 5lb penalty for that win, so it could pay to side with the improving CHEERS BABE Only narrowly denied at Lingfield earlier this month, Ian Williams' inmate likely has more to offer in the hands of William Buick Trojan Truth is another to bear in mind.
WIN: CHEERS BABE
DANGER: ALWAYS FEARLESS

The five race Racing Excellence Apprentice Series at Salisbury is generously sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai. It is specifically designed to assist the education and training of new and inexperienced jockeys
The first race in the Series on 18th May was won by Liam Wright on the Malcolm Saunders trained Redredrobin at 7-2. The second race in the Series on 18th June was won by Alex Jary on the Daniel & Claire Kubler trained Moondial at 7-2. The third race in the Series on 15th July was won by Shariq Mohd on the Rachel Cook & John Bridger trained Beau Jardine at 5-1.
After today’s race, the final race in the Series will be on 7th September A points system operates throughout the Series and is allocated as follows: 1st
5 points; 2nd – 3 points; 3rd – 2 points; 4th – 1 point
Additional points are awarded by the jockeys’ coach for presentation, professionalism, course familiarisation walk and riding ability.
At the end of the Series the top three riders in the Series will receive prizes as follows, kindly provided by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai. 1st - £1,500 2nd - £1,000 3rd - £500
Racing Excellence runs alongside the Jockey Coaching Programme (JCP) and is the industry accreditation for all apprentice and conditional races which run under hands and heels or training race conditions. Initially set up by The British Racing School as ‘Support for Young Jockeys’ in 2006, the BHA re-branded the scheme in 2010 as ‘Racing Excellence’
In February 2014 The British Racing School took over the management of Racing Excellence and The JCP The latter gives all Apprentices and Conditionals the opportunity to have a coach. All coaches who are all ex-Jockeys can be on hand to help with fitness, riding technique, nutrition and race reviews. A coach will attend every Racing Excellence race to conduct the pre-race course walk and then will also debrief afterwards.
I am particularly pleased to continue our sponsorship of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai - Racing Excellence Apprentice Handicap Series here at Salisbury Racecourse for the 2023 season.
This is a very unique series which will help mould up and coming riders in so many ways. Discipline and respect are the foundation of this series and with the guidance of George Baker, it will be of enormous benefit to the next generation of jockeys into the future.
Salisbury is a racecourse close to my heart as when I was living in the UK as a young man, I visited the track on many occasions and hold some wonderful memories of the venue.
Our investment into this series compliments our other Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai sponsorships across the UK in Newmarket and York.
Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai would like to offer our congratulations to the Board and Management at Salisbury Racecourse on this terrific initiative and wish all those who participate, every success as this series plays out over the summer months.

Race Summary: Though turned over at short odds at Epsom recently, TWILIGHT DANCER shaped like the best horse at the weights and she is taken to resume winning ways off the same mark with faster ground forecast here. If able to bounce back following a couple of low-key efforts, Revolutionary Man could emerge as the main danger ahead of turf debutante Abbey’s Dream.
