WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE

Welcome to Salisbury Racecourse for our Father’s Day Race Meeting.

It is always a great pleasure for us to have these family themed race days, when we see our future generation of racegoers joining their parents for a day out at the races. Racing has been taking place at Salisbury since at least 1584, which is four hundred and thirty-nine years ago, so by coming to Salisbury today, you are supporting a racecourse with a long and interesting history.

There are 7 races to enjoy this afternoon including the opening race for apprentice jockeys - the second in the five race series at Salisbury which has run for over thirty years. Several of the sport’s current leading jockeys will have participated in this series in the early stages of their careers.

It’s the Royal meeting at Ascot next week, which everyone involved in the sport greatly looks forward to, either by attending or watching on television. Hopefully, we might see a previous Salisbury winner or two successful at the meeting.

Once again, thank you for coming racing at Salisbury this afternoon. The directors and staff greatly appreciate your support, and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon. The list of our fixtures is on the back of the racecard and more details are on the website – salisburyracecourse.co.uk

Best Wishes

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE ONE

MOONDIAL'S recent all-weather form looks solid and strikes as a leading contender for a race of this nature. She has shown a tendency to race with up with the pace and, having already won over this trip for her previous yard, has very little to fear dropping back in distance now returning on turf. Penny Be and Duisker both have previous course experience and are feared most, while Desert Swirl also has potential.

WIN: MOONDIAL

RACE TWO

DANGER: PENNY BE

Withjust2lbseparatingthetopfourontheofficialratings,thisiscompetitiveandlikelytogodowntothewire. Under The Twilight arguably holds the strongest form but youth may win the day, with the progressive threeyear-oldTIGERBAYedgingpreference.Shewasn'tbeatenfarinadeeper-lookingraceatGoodwoodlastmonth and another step forward can see her add to her tally Beverley winner Abbadia also warrants consideration.

WIN: TIGER BAY

RACE THREE

DANGER: UNDER THE TWILIGHT

Alyanaabi is out of an unraced half-sister to 1,000 Guineas/Coronation Stakes winner Ghanaati and has to merit a second look in the betting, while Labalaba, who cost 210,000 pounds at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up sale in April, certainly commands interest. However, the one who appeals most is EMBODY, who is a full-sister to Breeder Cup Mile winner, Expert Eye and she adds the most spice to this intriguing novice event

WIN: EMBODY

RACE FOUR

DANGER: ALYANAABI

REDREDROBINwasfoiledinherquesttolandahat-trickwhenrunner-upatChepstowrecently However, she's only 1lb higher here and holds strong claims in regaining the winning thread. Musical Mystery returnedtoformwhensecondonhisreappearanceatDoncasterearlierinthemonthandisfearedmost, aheadofTheCruisingLord, whoofferedsomethingtoworkwithwhenthirdatNewburylastWednesday.

WIN: REDREDROBIN

RACE FIVE

DANGER: MUSICAL MYSTERY

MALKA should have learned plenty from her debut third at Goodwood last month and any natural improvement could make the daughter of Nathaniel tough to beat Mistral Star wasn't disgraced when placing third on her return to action at Newbury in April and also enters calculations Sea Theme looks the most interesting of the two newcomers and any market support for William Haggas' filly requires close attention.

WIN: MALKA

RACE SIX

DANGER:MISTRALSTAR

DUKEMAN is related to a few smart types and made a pleasing return to action when filling the runner-up spot at Redcar last month. He retains the mark from that outing and is fancied to get the better of Savrola, who secured a game win at Wolverhampton on his latest run. Rogue Rocket sports a first-time visor and also warrants a market chec following his first run of the season at Haydock

WIN: DUKEMAN

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: SAVROLA

Graham was only denied by three-quarters of a length over C&D on his latest outing and he is entitled to be in the mix off the same mark The vote, though, goes to GALLIMIMUS, who reverts to turf following a disappointing run at Lingfield earlier this month. He had secured back-to-back victories at Leicester over 1m 2f at the end of May and an extra couple of furlongs may not be enough to hold him back Afloat completes the shortlist.

WIN: GALLIMIMUS

DANGER: GRAHAM

I am particularly pleased to continue our sponsorship of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai - Racing Excellence Apprentice Handicap Series here at Salisbury Racecourse for the 2023 season.

This is a very unique series which will help mould up and coming riders in so many ways. Discipline and respect are the foundation of this series and with the guidance of George Baker, it will be of enormous benefit to the next generation of jockeys into the future.

Salisbury is a racecourse close to my heart as when I was living in the UK as a young man, I visited the track on many occasions and hold some wonderful memories of the venue.

Our investment into this series compliments our other Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai sponsorships across the UK in Newmarket and York.

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai would like to offer our congratulations to the Board and Managment at Salisbury Racecourse on this terrific initiative and wish all those who participate, every success as this series plays out over the summer months.

Race Summary: A few of these arrive with question marks against them so this looks a good opportunity for the consistent and in-form MOONDIAL to open her account for the season. Penny Be got right back on track when fifth here last month and rates the chief threat, with Duisker appealing as the pick of the remainder for place purposes now reverted to a longer trip

Race Summary: Cases can be made for a few, but the tentative vote goes to MICHAELS CHOICE, who needs to put a below-par effort behind him but has dipped below his last winning mark and has his usual pilot back on board. Redredrobin is thriving at present, so Malcolm Saunders’ mare is put forward as the main threat, with Musical Mystery rounding off the shortlist.

The H. S. LESTER MEMORIAL CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP STAKES 51ST RUNNING

H. S. Lester began his involvement in bookmaking in the 1890’s, when as a 16-year-old, he worked for his father William as a bookmaker’s runner on the street corners of the East-end of London. He quickly progressed to making his own books and by 1905, he had made enough money to move to a much better house in Leighton Buzzard. His next house, “Sunloch”, in Banbury was paid for with the profits of betting on the eponymously named winner of the 1914 Grand National.

He started to own horses in 1931, and formed a profitable association with the trainer George Todd, whom he helped buy the stables Manton. Both H. S. and Todd believed that there was no point in owning racehorses unless money could be made from betting. They had some success and H. S. won over 100 races including the Brighton Cup, the Chester Cup, and the Queen Elizabeth Cup at Lingfield.

As the most accomplished risk taker in the family, H.S. would go to considerable lengths to secure the best odds when betting. He is reputed to have driven from Banbury to Brighton and back as he was convinced that he could get better odds on the course in person. The story goes, he drove his Rolls Royce to the course, secured the odds he was looking for, watched the horse come home first, collected his winnings, and drove straight back to Banbury. Petrol must have been a great deal cheaper then!

Not all his attempted coups worked quite as well. On another occasion, he had a horse running on the South coast and drove down to watch, convinced it would win. He carefully told everyone at the course that the horse had no chance, in order to protect the starting price bets he had placed earlier. This might have worked had he not been seen at the last minute placing a bet on his horse. As a result, the starting price tightened considerably - which did not please the trainer!

Away from racing, he was awarded an OBE for his contribution to WW1 and was Mayor of Banbury twice in the early part of WW2.

Raceform Median Time: 2 mins 43.60 secs

Betting Forecast: 8-11 Gallimimus (GB), 11-4 Graham (GB), 6-1 Afloat (GB), 20-1 Quizlet (GB)

Race Summary: GALLIMIMUS lost his chance at the start last time but had looked highly progressive prior to that, so he makes most appeal on the assumption that he breaks a bit better this time. Graham is the main danger and Afloat is also a player.
