To be precise, two have been “Good”; eleven “Good to Firm” (including the expected ground today) and one “Firm”, which was shortly after the exceptional heatwave in mid-July With just two more racedays after this one, it will be interesting to see if we get any ground on the slow side of Good before the season ends The most likely of course is the meeting at the end of this month. Our enormous thanks to everyone supporting us today our sponsors, corporate clients, owners, and customers in the enclosures The directors and staff wish you all a very pleasant afternoon racing.

Today is always one of our most eagerly anticipated race meetings of the season. It has the final race in the apprentice series; plenty of nice two year olds on show; and the Lochsong fillies’ handicap This year, we also have a new Class 3 handicap over 1 mile added to the programme. Much has been said about the dry weather this summer Salisbury Racecourse has only had 21mm (less than an inch) of rain throughout both July (3mm) and August (18mm). This is 17% of the average total for the two months combined (124mm / 5 inches).

The lack of regular rain has meant that all fourteen race days at Salisbury so far have been on Good ground or faster

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating Marmalade Mr A. WIN: ROMAN SPRING DANGER: CIRCLE OF FIRE

RACE TWO

WIN: MARIA BRANWELL DANGER: TAGLINE

There are a few in with a decent chance of landing this contest, but perhaps none with a better chance than ROMAN SPRING, who made a pleasing racecourse debut over 7f at Chelmsford. Richard Hannon's charge was rallying late on, shaping as if this step up to 1m will be a positive. Circle of Fire represents Her Majesty and he appears likely to come on for his debut effort when third of six over 7f at Leicester. Tabaretta is another to note

RACE FIVE MAKAROVA was runner-up at Goodwood on her latest outing to a rival who backed up that victory by winning two valuable prizes at the Shergar Cup and at York last month. The daughter of Acclamation races off a 3lb higher mark, but she is capable of further improvement with the booking of Ryan Moore a significant one. The return to 6f may benefit Cuban Breeze with Owen Lewis taking 7lb off, while others to note include Another Romance and Al Simmo

RACE SEVEN

QUANTUM LIGHT has made a good start to life on the racecourse and has been threatening to get her head in front Ralph Beckett's two-year-old was beaten by just three quarters of a length when second of nine over 7f at Kempton when last seen, and a repeat of that effort would see Frankie Dettori's mount go close. Honeymooner is an improving type and is noted, while the well-bred Doom should be respected on debut

RACE SIX PERSIAN ROYAL looked ahead of the handicapper when bringing up his hat-trick at Newbury last month and the son of Al Kazeem is expected to add another success to his tally, despite an 8lb rise in the weights Having bolted up at prohibitive odds last time out, Indemnify could pose a serious threat on his handicap bow, along with Cabinet Of Clowns, who tackles 1m for the first time. Recent Windsor scorer Grey Fox shouldn't be underestimated either

RACE THREE

WIN: MAOKAI DANGER: AJRAD

RACE FOUR MARIA BRANWELL wasn't completely disgraced on her first attempt at 6f in the Lowther at York and David O'Meara's filly boasts strong credentials in her bid to get back to winning ways Tagline would be a solid threat to all if returning to form after her latest effort when finishing last at Sandown, while Funny Money Honey, who makes her second start for Jessica Harrington, and Ivory Madonna are both capable of a decent showing.

WIN: QUANTUM LIGHT DANGER: HONEYMOONER

RACE ONE MAOKAI was staying on powerfully on his previous outing when scoring by one and a half lengths over 1m at Chepstow, and this looks a nice opportunity to follow up that success Ajrad is also a last-time-out winner, scoring by two lengths over 7f at this venue, and this could be within his reach. Sandy Paradise was denied a hat-trick when he was last seen over the extended mile at Wolverhampton and also commands respect

WIN: MAKAROVA DANGER: CUBAN BREEZE

WIN: PERSIAN ROYAL DANGER: INDEMNIFY

WIN: MAKINMEDOIT DANGER: MIRAMICHI

TODAY’S TIPS

A chance is taken on MAKINMEDOIT Harry Eustace's charge drops in class and, having performed well from a 4lb higher mark at Chester in June, the three-year-old might be able to take advantage of a sliding handicap mark Miramichi has been consistent of late and ought to remain competitive along with General Lee, who finished a good second at Newbury last month. Handicap debutant American Flag could be well treated on the pick of his form.

BOB McCREERY

Bob McCreery was twice Champion Amateur rider with many notable winners on the flat and over jumps. He later became a highly successful breeder and owner and it is appropriate that the Bob McCreery Memorial Stakes is run today at Salisbury exactly five years after Anna Nerium, sporting his colours, burst through the field to land the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes under Tom Marquand.

McCreery soon became highly influential in the bloodstock world with the formation of the Injured Jockeys Fund, the European Breeders’ Fund (with the help of Peter Willett, Vincent O’Brien and Alec Head) and was a key Chairman of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. Always approachable and friendly, he helped and encouraged many young people looking for a career in the racing and breeding industries. He developed the Moreton Paddox Stud in Warwickshire before moving to Stowell Hill in Somerset, not far from Wincanton racecourse. His early winners as a breeder included High Top (2,000 Guineas), Old Vic (Irish Derby & French Derby), Anshan, Electric and Gale Force Ten, who all became successful stallions. More recent Group & Stakes winners include the unbeaten Piping Rock, Middle Club and Billesdon Bess, while the current stars include Billesdon Brook (6 wins, £544.895, incl. 1,000 Guineas and Oak Tree Stakes) and Anna Nerium (5 wins, £178,861, incl Princess Elizabeth Stakes, Epsom). All these have been trained by Richard Hannon Snr & Jnr, leading trainers at Salisbury. The EBF has raised many millions to boost prize money and Goodwood have featured the Peter Willett Stakes for several years.

TEMPUS

The hot favourite Modern News (Shamardal) was smartly away and set a modest early pace up front, tracked by Tempus (Kingman), and the tempo did not quicken until after half way. Modern News soon poached a three-length lead but Tempus gradually wore him down in the closing stages, pouncing late on to get his head in front in the last few strides He passed the post three quarters of a length to the good, with Sinjaari (Camelot) two and a half lengths further back in third. The winning six-year-old trained by Archie Watson, was sold out of the Juddmonte draft for just 25,000gns at Tattersalls a year ago and this was his third and biggest victory since. He had also twice finished second in Listed contests, including when beaten more than four lengths by Modern News at Windsor in May, and FRIDAY, 12TH AUGUST 2022 Tempus (Kingman; right) swoops late to catch Modern News (Shamardal) in yesterday’s Gr.3 Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury.
