Royal Ascot: A Brief History
“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”
These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event - Her Majesty’s Plate - was held here upon her request that very same year For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats - and today, the issuing of the Handbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005. The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year Further success for Queen Elizabeth II came in 2016 with Dartmouth winning the Hardwick Stakes
The Village Enclosure opened in 2017; the first new enclosure for 100 years offers racegoers a unique perspective from the centre of the track
2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.
2023 saw King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.
In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes was run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty
In 2025, the 200th anniversary of the Royal Procession was celebrated while in 2026 prize money has been raised to record levels with £10.65 million available across the 35-race programme, ensuring that Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the globe.

Race Histories
2.30pm The Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2)
Named after the consort of King George V, this race was first run in 1921. The Queen Mary Stakes is the first major race of the season exclusively for two-year-old fillies. Run over the minimum distance of five furlongs and promoted to Group 2 status in 2004, it provides a useful opportunity to assess ability and potential to perform at higher levels. The 2025 winner True Love went on to Group 1 success as a juvenile and then won the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket as a three-year-old.
3.05pm The Queen’s Vase (Group 2)
Promoted to Group 2 and reduced from 2 miles in 2017, the race was named to honour Queen Victoria and first run in 1838. This race became the King’s Vase in 1903 and reverted to its original name of the Queen’s Vase on the succession of Queen Elizabeth II. Run over a-mile-and three-quarters, this contest provides a test of stamina for three-year-olds. Winners of the race often go on to compete in the Gold Cup in future years including Estimate, owned by Queen Elizabeth II, and Stradivarius, the most recent to win the historic Gold Cup in subsequent seasons.
3.40pm The Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2)
Previously known as the Windsor Forest Stakes until 2013 when it was renamed in honour of the then Duke of Cambridge. Created in 2004 as part of an initiative to encourage connections of the leading Classic generation fillies from the previous year to keep their stars in training, it is open only to fillies and mares aged four or over. As a Group 2 race, Group 1 winners carry a penalty, so the option of the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, where no penalties are carried, is still open to the very best fillies. In 2022, Saffron Beach underlined the race’s quality by going on to Group 1 success.
4.20pm The Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1)
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes, first run at Royal Ascot in 1862, is named after the son of Queen Victoria (later to become King Edward VII). Originally staged over a mile and five furlongs, the race often attracted horses that had participated in the Classics.
There was no Prince of Wales’s Stakes from 1946 until 1968, a year before the Prince of Wales’s investiture in 1969, then it was reintroduced and the distance changed to one mile and two furlongs. In 2000, The Prince of Wales’s Stakes was elevated to Group 1 status and restricted to four-year-olds and older. Now worth £1 million in prize money it stands as one of the week’s headline events and has been won by some of the best middle distance horses in the world in recent years including Auguste Rodin and Ombudsman.
5.00pm The Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap)
The Royal Hunt Cup always provides one of the greatest spectacles of the Royal Meeting as a maximum field thunders up Ascot’s Straight Mile course for one of the biggest betting races of the season First run in 1843, it was originally staged over seven furlongs and 155 yards. The current distance of a mile was established in 1955 when the straight course was re-aligned as part of the previous redevelopment.
5.35pm The Kensington Palace Stakes (Handicap)
A new handicap introduced for the first time in 2021 for fillies and mares aged four-years-old and upwards. Kensington Palace, set in Kensington Gardens, has been a residence for Members of the Royal Family since the 17th century. The inaugural winner was Lola Showgirl, a first Royal Ascot winner for trainer David Loughnane and jockey Laura Pearson.
6.10pm The Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed)
First run in 1839 over the straight mile course, this race was originally designed to attract three-year-old colts and fillies that had competed in the early season Classics. It was then reduced to the minimum distance of five furlongs and restricted to two-year-olds in 2004. The 2020 renewal was won by Tactical for Queen Elizabeth II, a home bred son of Toronado Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by James Doyle, he was Queen Elizabeth II’s 24th and final winner at the Royal Meeting. The race was increased to six furlongs from 2026 with sire conditions also introduced meaning it is restricted to two-year-olds whose sire won over seven furlongs or more as a two-year-old, or a mile or further at three-years-old and upwards.
The Longines Master Collection –the Official Watch of Royal Ascot 2026
At Royal Ascot 2026, the winged hourglass brand is proud to present a completely redesigned Longines Master Collection, introducing new models in 30-mm, 34-mm, 39-mm, and 41-mm diameters for both women and men. Powered by state-of-the-art automatic calibres, these timepieces celebrate the art of detail through intricate barleycorn patterns, expressive new dials, and newly imagined cases and bracelets – a contemporary expression of the elegance for which Longines has been renowned since 1832.
Since its launch in 2005, the Longines Master Collection represents the pinnacle of the brand’s horological craftsmanship, where expert mechanics meet enduring style. With this comprehensive redesign, every element has been reimagined – from dial and hands to bezel and bracelet – for timepieces that express a contemporary vision of classic elegance.
At the heart of the new design is the barleycorn pattern – a motif that adorns each dial, creating depth and visual texture that shifts with the light. Framing every dial is a distinctive concave-shaped bezel, its sculptural profile lending each case an architectural quality.
Each timepiece houses an exclusive Longines automatic movement the L592.5 calibre in the 30-mm models and the L888.5 in the 34-mm, 39-mm, and 41-mm models each equipped with a silicon balance-spring for enhanced precision and reliability.
Completing the experience, these watches are available with stainless-steel bracelets featuring the newly designed shortened links, or with leather straps in complementary tones, including blue, bordeaux, and anthracite.
Every detail, from dial to wrist, reflects the considered elegance that defines the Longines Master Collection.
With this renewed Longines Master Collection, the brand reaffirms its dedication to the art of watchmaking creating timepieces where every surface, every proportion, and every finishing speaks to a singular vision of refined design. Now available in four sizes and a range of dial and material combinations, the collection invites each wearer to discover an expression of elegance that is uniquely their own, with more to follow later this year.

Royal Ascot Celebrates Community, Schools and Charity
As part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, a range of initiatives and activities will take place throughout Royal Ascot. Once again, we have created a dedicated schools’ viewing and picnic area on Ascot Heath on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a total of 750 children from 17 local schools set to enjoy the spectacle of the Royal Procession and racing. Racing to School, celebrating its 25th anniversary, will also be in attendance, giving children the chance to experience a virtual race on the Ascot turf using equicisers and VR headsets
This initiative forms part of our wider schools’ engagement programme, which includes sustainability and hospitality tours, annual art, fashion, photography and baking competitions, and history tours featuring a meet and greet with our equine ambassador, Side Glance.
On Monday 15 June, we were delighted to welcome 270 staff members from 37 local charities to enjoy a trial lunch service, enabling our team to refine preparations for the week ahead while recognising these valued guests Throughout the week, we look forward to welcoming members of the local community, including those successful in the annual resident ticket ballot. We remain incredibly grateful for their continued support during Royal Ascot and throughout the year, and wish them an enjoyable afternoon of racing. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank local services and personnel supporting the racecourse and racegoers during the event.

Daryz and Graffard: Ready to Take the Crown
There’s a supreme confidence in the way Francis-Henri Graffard speaks about Daryz this season. Today, Royal Ascot gets to witness that greatness as last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner bids to add the Prince of Wales’s Stakes to his already glistening CV
This time a year ago, Daryz was still a horse being shaped; not yet the finished article. After four straight victories on French soil, his introduction to British racing was an underwhelming one, trailing home last behind Ombudsman in the Juddmonte International at York
“Last year, he was a horse in progression,” Graffard explains “Physically, he needed to strengthen.”
Twelve months on, that process has come to fruition. The horse Graffard now brings to Royal Ascot is one he describes as “much stronger, very powerful, and also much more mature mentally”, a deadly combination that has transformed promise into Group 1 substance and more. Today, he bids to wrest the Prince of Wales’s Stakes crown from his York conqueror, Ombudsman.
What has stood out most to Graffardand the racing world - is the manner of the improvement. Daryz has developed an ability to quicken that marks him out at the top level - a decisive turn of foot, delivered with authority. Last month’s Prix Aga Khan IV was a full three furlongs less than the Arc, on slightly faster ground - yet the end result was even more impressive.
“The power he can develop when he quickens it’s incredible,” Graffard says
“That’s why he is even better this year We are going there to be competitive The race is going to be amazing, but everyone knows how hard it is to win at Ascot.”
For Graffard, Daryz represents more than just a runner at the meeting. “He’s a very important horse for the colours,” he notes, underlining the significant support of the Aga Khan Studs which has produced some truly top-class talent in recent years.
And talking of those silks, Ascot is very familiar with Calandagan, the best horse in the world last year
Calandagan rocketed to the forefront of everyone’s attention when streaking away with the King Edward VII Stakes in 2024. Just over 12 months later, he would return to take the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes – the second of four Group 1s he’d win in the space of six months Next was Ascot’s QIPCO Champion Stakes, the joint-best race in the world last year alongside the Japan Cup, which was also the final race of a remarkable close to 2025 for the all-conquering gelding.
Before Calandagan came Goliath. Trained by Graffard and then owned by Philip Baron Von Ullmann, he arrived at Ascot unheralded and left a giant. A shock winner of the 2024 King George, he’s set to return to the scene of his greatest triumph later in the week in the Hardwicke Stakes.
“We won the King George two years in a row, ” Graffard reflects “It’s very special.”
The trainer knows that better than most. Having spent formative years in Britain under the Darley (now Godolphin)
Flying Start Programme, he has a deep understanding of the racing culture and the demands placed on horses at meetings of this calibre. It is part of what draws him back each summer and what makes success here so meaningful.
“Ascot is very special, and Royal Ascot is very special,” he says “The racecourse is beautiful, they do an amazing job, everything looks fantastic. The people, the dress code - but the level of the races is incredible.”
It is precisely that combination that makes the meeting a defining target for trainers the world over
“This is a meeting you have to be present at,” Graffard continues “Owners want to come, it is very international, and if you want to show what you can do, this is the place.”
In 2026, his presence will be more significant than ever For the first time, Graffard expects to have runners on each day of the meeting, a statement of both the strength of his string and his intent
“It’s going to be a long week,” he says, with a smile. “Very tiring, but we’re really looking forward to it.”
Graffard is under no illusion about the scale of the challenge. Royal Ascot leaves little margin for error, and even the most progressive horses must prove themselves against elite opposition. Today’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes, with a deeply talented field, will be as tough an examination as he’s had in his nine-race career
“We go there with a lot of humility,” he says “Fingers crossed I hope we can have at least one winner.”
Map Of Stars’ Wolferton Stakes win yesterday will have eased those nerves, and now Daryz has a great chance of adding a second. He arrives as a horse who has done everything asked of him this season; the consummate professional. In races like the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, that capacity to respond in the moment is often what separates contenders from winners – as proven by Ombudsman’s electric, decisive turn of foot in last year’s renewal.
Whether Daryz can deliver that same decisive blow on one of racing’s grandest stages will become clear by about 4.23pm today.
Francis-Henri Graffard
Showcasing Sustainability
At Ascot Racecourse we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our events on every scale. This year, a dedicated area in the Queen Anne Enclosure will showcase our sustainability work to racegoers and provide them with an ideally placed hydration station in the shade.
To incentivise people to travel in a sustainable way, the first 50 racegoers that visit the area on each day will be able to claim a complimentary Royal Ascot water bottle if they have travelled to the racecourse by train, bus, electric car, bike, or walked.
Water bottles will also be available to purchase which can be used at the Hydration Stations around the site as we try to reduce the amount of single-use plastic on site. We will also have Sustainability Ambassadors on hand to talk about the various things we are doing to rescue our environmental impact.

Feature Race Analysis
A blockbuster renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes see eight superstars go to post. Last year winner Ombudsman bids to defend his crown but the three-time Group 1 winner will have no easy task and must fend off the challenge of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Daryz, just as he did in the Juddmonte International at York. These two look set for battle in what could be one of the races of the season.
Almaqam, who beat Ombudsman in the Brigadier Gerard last year, could prove the biggest danger to the big two, having won at Group 1 level for the first time at the Curragh to claim victory in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Minnie Hauk won well in the Group 2 Mooresbridge Stakes but was subsequently unable to back that victory up when beaten by Almaqam at the Curragh. She gets a handy fillies allowance, along with the Andrew Balding-trained See The Fire.
Godolphin bid to make their stars life easier by running the likely pacemaker Devil’s Advocate, while Mississippi River will look to do the same for the Coolmore operation.
A strong field of eight concludes with the bet365 Mile winner Dancing Gemini, who has already proven he has what it takes at this level with two strong efforts in the Lockinge.

Ascot unveils state-of-the-art jockey facilities
Ascot Racecourse is delighted to have completed a £2.5 million project to redevelop and refurbish the jockey facilities in time for the start of the 2026 Flat season.
The refurbishment has delivered world-class upgrades to the facilities in place for jockeys across the changing rooms, physio rooms, gym area, valet space and lounge suite. The changing rooms have been rebuilt from the ground up to meet modern standards in safeguarding, ergonomics, and operational flexibility with the existing facilities stripped out entirely
The project was shaped significantly by safeguarding mandates issued by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which now apply across every racecourse in the UK A shared central zone for valets to operate between the male and female changing areas has been designed to allow the female facilities to expand when required, with different configurations available depending on the day’s racing programme.
Dedicated under-18 cubicles have been incorporated, alongside carefully considered segregation and privacy measures throughout New ice baths have been installed across both male and female changing rooms,
alongside two dedicated physio rooms and a gym area that opens directly onto the valet tables – keeping jockeys and valets connected throughout the raceday. Saddle racks, wall-mounted hooks, additional benching and washing and drying equipment give the valets everything they need close to hand.
The new Lounge and Kitchen café-style space provides a quiet space for jockeys to rest throughout the day.
Nick Attenborough, Chair of the Professional Jockeys Association, said: “I’d like to thank the Trustees and Directors of Ascot for the superb new weighing room and changing facilities at the racecourse. These will make such a difference to the working lives of both our male and female jockeys. We understand that this upgrade came at very considerable cost when the sport is under financial pressure, so we greatly appreciate what’s been achieved.”
Hollie Doyle, one of British racing’s leading jockeys, said: “The new jockey changing rooms are really outstanding –the best I’ve seen in the UK.”
Fellow rider Tom Marquand was equally positive: “Ascot has done what they’ve always done – put jockeys in world-class changing facilities, as you’d expect at a racecourse of this calibre.”

Timeform Summary
Having met trouble it was striking how much ground SENORITA BONITA made up inside the final furlong to collar the reopposing Fast Track at Nottingham and she can take the step up in class in her stride. Victorious has to show she can cope with a drop back to 5f but is still feared most. Karl Burke has won this twice in recent years and has two solid contenders in wide-margin Carlisle winner Wild Blossom and York listed scorer Love A Giggle. US raider More Champagne also looked good on debut.
Congratulations to Ryan Moore who has been appointed MBE for his services to racing and British sport in the King's birthday honours list.
Ryan has been the leading rider at Royal Ascot 12 times and had ridden 92 winners at the Royal Meeting prior to the start of this week, including most famously Estimate for Queen Elizabeth II in the 2013 Gold Cup.
Every horse competing at Royal Ascot this week is fitted with two lightweight GPS tracking devices supplied by Longines Total Performance Data uses the live GPS data to power a range of real-time insights for fans, including the live winning probabilities displayed on racecourse screens throughout the race.
These live percentages are calculated using the horses’ positions, speeds and race dynamics, combined with millions of historical race performances, to estimate each runner’s chance of winning at any given moment. As the race develops, these probabilities update continuously, helping fans understand which horses are travelling strongly, gaining momentum, or facing an increasingly difficult task
After each race, you’ll also see a graphical summary of the winner’s performance, highlighting a selection of key speed and stride metrics that help explain exactly how the race was won.
What do the metrics tell us?
Early Speed
How quickly the horse accelerated to 30mph after the start.
Average Speed
The horse’s average speed over the entire race.
Top Speed
The highest speed recorded by the winner at any point during the race.
Late Speed
The horse’s average speed over the crucial final two furlongs.
Run-Out Speed
Measured exactly two seconds after crossing the finish line, this can provide an indication of how much momentum remained at the end of the race.
Fastest Rankings
Shows how each of the speed metrics above ranked against every other runner in the field.
Stride Frequency
Also known as cadence, this measures the number of strides taken per second. While there are exceptions, sprinters typically exhibit higher stride frequencies than horses competing over longer distances
Stride Length
The average distance covered with each stride. Longer-distance Flat horses often produce longer, less frequent strides than sprinters, although stride length is also influenced by the horse’s physical build, the racing surface, and the characteristics of the racecourse itself.
3.05 Second Race
Ascot Racecourse is giving a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the best turned out horse, and a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the winning horse

GALIYAN was notably strong at the line when opening his account in a well-run 1 1/2m maiden at Chester in May, which bodes well for further improvement over this still longer trip, so he’s fancied to take the rise in class in his stride in what doesn’t look the strongest renewal of this Group 2. Limestone has a likeable attitude which is sure to continue to stand him in good stead now that he tackles even better company, while Port of Spain promises to be suited by the further increase in trip.

Races don’t come much better than this. Last year’s winner OMBUDSMAN is rock solid and the fact he’s proven on fast ground tips the vote his way over Arc hero Daryz, who has been most impressive on a couple of return visits to Longchamp this spring. Minnie Hauk, who is closely matched with Daryz on Arc form, had an excuse for a below-par effort behind Almaqam at the Curragh last time and can bounce back to form and also play her part in what promises to be a thriller.

ALOBAYYAH is still unexposed and couldn’t have shaped much better granted her disadvantageous track position over C&D last time. She’s fancied to reverse form with the pair that finished ahead of her and take this competitive event. Miss Nightfall ran well at this meeting last season and is very interesting with the benefit of a positive draw, whilst top-weight Stateira is also appealing reverting to handicap company after a fine effort in a Group 2 last time.
