Royal Ascot: A Brief History

“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”

These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event - Her Majesty’s Plate - was held here upon her request that very same year For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.

The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.

It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.

Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats - and today, the issuing of the Handbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.

Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.

Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.

2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.

Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005. The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006

In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring

Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes

In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year Further success for Queen Elizabeth II came in 2016 with Dartmouth winning the Hardwick Stakes

The Village Enclosure opened in 2017; the first new enclosure for 100 years offers racegoers a unique perspective from the centre of the track

2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.

2023 saw King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.

In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes was run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty

In 2025, the 200th anniversary of the Royal Procession was celebrated while in 2026 prize money has been raised to record levels with £10.65 million available across the 35-race programme, ensuring that Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the globe.

Race Histories

2.30pm The Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1)

The Royal Meeting commences with a celebration of the monarch who established racing at Ascot in 1711. Founded in 1840, the Queen Anne Stakes was awarded Group 3 status in 1971, then promoted to Group 2 in 1984 The race attracts Europe’s top older milers and achieved the highest three-year average rating of any Group 2 race in Britain from 1999 to 2002. This saw the race elevated to Group 1 status as of 2003 and it has been the opening race of the week since 2008 with elite milers Frankel and Baaeed winning since then.

3.05pm The Coventry Stakes (Group 2)

First run in 1890, the race was named after the ninth Earl of Coventry, Master of the Buckhounds between 1886 and 1892. This is traditionally the first Group contest of the year for juveniles and as a result attracts some of the very best precocious young horses, forming part of the high-class opening day card. Many top-quality horses have won this race before going on to achieve greatness, including Canford Cliffs, Dawn Approach and Caravaggio, since the race was promoted to Group 2 status in 2004. In 2025 it was won by Gstaad who went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and the Irish 2,000 Guineas last month.

3.40pm The King Charles III Stakes (Group 1)

A Stand Plate was first run on the round course in 1837, becoming the Royal Stand Plate in 1858. The race was renamed the Queen’s Stand Plate in 1860 for two-year-olds, over the sprint distance of four furlongs, finally becoming the King’s Stand Plate in 1901. Today the race remains a sprint, although now run over the minimum trip of five furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards. In 2008 it was promoted to Group 1 and it has been a rich hunting ground for international raiders in recent years with Lady Aurelia winning for America in 2017 and then Nature Strip in 2022 and Asfoora in 2024 for Australia. The race was renamed The King Charles III Stakes for the 2024 renewal.

4.20pm The St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1)

Named after the Tudor royal residence, the St James’s Palace Stakes was first run in 1834, when Derby winner Plenipotentiary claimed victory in a walkover. The race was originally classified as a Group Two however was elevated to Group 1 status in 1988. This race features the best male milers from the Classic generation, often attracting horses that have run in the British, French and Irish 2,000 Guineas. Frankel, Kingman and Palace Pier are recent stars to have won the race.

5.00pm The Ascot Stakes (Handicap)

First run in 1839, the Ascot Stakes is run over two-and-a-half miles. Like the Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes, this race provides a thorough test of stamina. It is one of just four races at the Royal Meeting in which the field passes the winning post twice. The race regularly attracts high class stayers from the Jumps sphere, with dual purpose trainer Willie Mullins having secured four victories. The race normally features horses that will go on to run in the major staying handicaps throughout the season including the Northumberland Plate and the Ebor.

5.35pm

The Wolferton Stakes (Listed)

First run in 2002 as part of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, this is a Listed race over 10 furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards, having been a Listed Handicap until 2017. Addeybb won the race in 2019 before going on to Group 1 success around the world while John Gosden is the leading trainer with five victories, the last with Israr in 2024 as part of a partnership with son Thady.

6.10pm The Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)

Staged over a mile and three quarters, the Copper Horse Stakes was one of the six additional races to be run at Royal Ascot in 2020 Open to four-year-olds and upwards, Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race’s name being included and it now forms part of the permanently expanded programme. It is inspired by the magnificent statue of King George III –mounted on horseback – which marks the end of the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. The inaugural running was won by Fujaira Prince who went on to win the Ebor at York and was then second in the Group 1 Irish St. Leger and third in the British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.

Showcasing Sustainability

At Ascot Racecourse we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our events on every scale. This year, a dedicated area in the Queen Anne Enclosure will showcase our sustainability work to racegoers and provide them with an ideally placed hydration station in the shade.

To incentivise people to travel in a sustainable way, the first 50 racegoers that visit the area on each day will be able to claim a complimentary Royal Ascot water bottle if they have travelled to the racecourse by train, bus, electric car, bike, or walked.

Water bottles will also be available to purchase which can be used at the Hydration Stations around the site as we try to reduce the amount of single-use plastic on site.

We will also have Sustainability Ambassadors on hand to talk about the various things we are doing to rescue our environmental impact.

Welcome from QIPCO

There is nothing quite like Royal Ascot, a race meeting which is always a highlight of the British sporting summer and one which spectators and competitors alike have been looking forward to since the curtain came down 12 months ago.

For our family and our investment company QIPCO, which has enjoyeda flourishingassociation with Ascotasits first ever commercial partner for well over a decade now, the sense of anticipation and excitement remains as strong as ever

Royal Ascot is a colourful celebration of pageantry as well as a showcase for the world’s greatest horses and jockeys We once again extend our warmest wishes to Their Majesties the King and Queen for their patronage. British racing is so fortunate to receive their interest and support.

Our family’s involvement at Ascot was initiated from our love of the sport and the thoroughbred. It has included memorable moments of our own on this very track with Qatar Racing.

Beyond this week, QIPCO has also been a driving force behind the creation of British Champions Day in 2011. We are so proud to see how it has become established as the glittering finale of the Flat season back at Ascot each October

As owners, we have been able to reach the very summit with Champions Day winners Roaring Lion and Simple Verse, as well as Kameko, our brilliant Futurity Stakes victor and the fastest winner of the 2000 Guineas in its long history

Kamekocontinues to spearhead our breeding interests at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire. He is already the sire of a top-level winner from his first crop of sons and daughters and we hope that his offspring will continue to go from strength-to-strength.

It is a privilege just to have a runner at Royal Ascot, let alone to be lucky enough to be among the winners. On behalf of QIPCO Iwisheveryone athoroughly enjoyable week, whether you are taking part or simply enjoying the show.

Bow Echo and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s ongoing influence at Royal Ascot

A mainstay in the pantheon of iconic silks over three decades, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s yellow colours with three black spots have heralded plenty of success at Royal Ascot and beyond. The leading breeder and owner passed away on 29th December 2025 but his legacy lives on, through his involvement in one of the dominant sires in the sport, but also the horses still running in his name.

The most high-profile and exciting of all of those is undoubtedly Bow Echo, who was one of the most impressive 2000 Guineas winners of recent years when bolting up at Newmarket at the start of May. That success was the result of multiple generations of homebred calculation – his dam Aristocratic Lady being out of Dubai Queen, and his sire Night Of Thunder having the colossal Dubawi as his own father Dubai Queen and Dubawi both came from the same mare – Zomaradah – making Bow Echo inbred 3x3 to horses who were both bred by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid. A true homebred success and he will look to assert his dominance over the Classic generation milers in today’s St James’s Palace Stakes, a race won by Rosallion for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid in 2024

In fact when it comes to the Royal Meeting, it all began with Zomaradah, the Group 1 Italian Oaks winner in 1998 and winner of a further three Group 2 races in different countries She was bred by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid and was one of a handful of horses owned by him to run in Great Britain that year

She might not have been the most celebrated of those on the track, with the 1998 Derby winner High-Rise – also second in that year’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes – also amongst that year’s cohort. But Zomaradah’s lasting influence would come at stud, her first foal coming from the ill-fated Dubai Millennium’s only crop – a colt, born at Godolphin’s Kildangan Stud under the Darley banner, called Dubawi. After a successful career on the track, his now legendary time at stud has produced over 60 individual top-level winners and counting Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s part in creating one of the dominant sires of recent decades should not be understated.

It would be over a decade later that Sheikh Mohammed Obaid tasted Royal Ascot success for the first time. Afsare was unraced as a juvenile but made rapid progress in the space of just 46 days in 2010, progressing from a second-placed effort on debut at Kempton at the start of May, to victory in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes by the middle of June. By Dubawi, out of his own broodmare Jumaireyah, this was a true homemade success.

Closer to home, another of Jumaireyah’s offspring would deliver plenty of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s biggest names Reem Three, a Mark Of Esteem mare, enjoyed a relatively modest career on the track but managed to produce a remarkable

Bow Echo

nine flat winners, by nine different sires The best of those was undoubtedly Triple Time who caused one of the biggest shocks at Royal Ascot 2023 when winning the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes on seasonal debut, beating the likes of Inspiral, Modern Games and Native Trail. Cape Byron also enjoyed success at the Royal Meeting but his success was far more predictable, justifying favouritism in the Wokingham Stakes from near the top of the handicap The most-raced (and winningmost) of Jumaireyah’s progeny was Ostilio, another Royal Ascot winner when taking the Britannia Stakes in 2018

Ajman Princess was narrowly denied in the Ribblesdale Stakes but, yet again, it was testament to the strength of the Sheikh Mohammed Obaid bloodlines that she would produce another Group 1 winner in Inisherin. The only surprise with him was that he proved far more adept at sprint trips, most notably when winning the 2024 Commonwealth Cup over six furlongs – half the distance his dam had thrived at

And even one of Reem Three’s unraced progeny got in on the act Rosaline may not have made the track but her best son was the sensational Rosallion. A Group 1 winner at two, he won the Irish 2,000 Guineas the following year and then the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot a month later. That would be his last victory although a string of seconds at Group 1 level as a

four-year-old, including in the Queen Anne Stakes, marked him down as surely one of the unluckiest horses in training last year.

Rosallion and Inisherin marked the fifth and sixth Royal Ascot winners racing in Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s colours out of either Jumaireyah, her daughter Reem Three, or her granddaughters The Group 1 double of Rosallion and Inisherin in 2024 was to be Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s final flourish at Royal Ascot, without a winner in 2025 But his racing bloodlines have left an indelible mark on the Royal Meeting, and with top-class talent still racing in his colours this year, there’s no doubt that his legacy will live on - at Royal Ascot and beyond.

Every horse competing at Royal Ascot this week is fitted with two lightweight GPS tracking devices supplied by Longines Total Performance Data uses the live GPS data to power a range of real-time insights for fans, including the live winning probabilities displayed on racecourse screens throughout the race.

These live percentages are calculated using the horses’ positions, speeds and race dynamics, combined with millions of historical race performances, to estimate each runner’s chance of winning at any given moment. As the race develops, these probabilities update continuously, helping fans understand which horses are travelling strongly, gaining momentum, or facing an increasingly difficult task

After each race, you’ll also see a graphical summary of the winner’s performance, highlighting a selection of key speed and stride metrics that help explain exactly how the race was won.

What do the metrics tell us?

Early Speed

How quickly the horse accelerated to 30mph after the start.

Average Speed

The horse’s average speed over the entire race.

Top Speed

The highest speed recorded by the winner at any point during the race.

Late Speed

The horse’s average speed over the crucial final two furlongs.

Run-Out Speed

Measured exactly two seconds after crossing the finish line, this can provide an indication of how much momentum remained at the end of the race.

Fastest Rankings

Shows how each of the speed metrics above ranked against every other runner in the field.

Stride Frequency

Also known as cadence, this measures the number of strides taken per second. While there are exceptions, sprinters typically exhibit higher stride frequencies than horses competing over longer distances

Stride Frequency

The average distance covered with each stride. Longer-distance Flat horses often produce longer, less frequent strides than sprinters, although stride length is also influenced by the horse’s physical build, the racing surface, and the characteristics of the racecourse itself.

Royal Ascot Celebrates Community, Schools and Charity

As part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, a range of initiatives and activities will take place throughout Royal Ascot. Once again, we have created a dedicated schools’ viewing and picnic area on Ascot Heath on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a total of 750 children from 17 local schools set to enjoy the spectacle of the Royal Procession and racing. Racing to School, celebrating its 25th anniversary, will also be in attendance, giving children the chance to experience a virtual race on the Ascot turf using equicisers and VR headsets

This initiative forms part of our wider schools’ engagement programme, which includes sustainability and hospitality tours, annual art, fashion, photography and baking competitions, and history tours featuring a meet and greet with our equine ambassador, Side Glance.

On Monday 15 June, we were delighted to welcome 270 staff members from 37 local charities to enjoy a trial lunch service, enabling our team to refine preparations for the week ahead while recognising these valued guests Throughout the week, we look forward to welcoming members of the local community, including those successful in the annual resident ticket ballot. We remain incredibly grateful for their continued support during Royal Ascot and throughout the year, and wish them an enjoyable afternoon of racing. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank local services and personnel supporting the racecourse and racegoers during the event.

Ascot and Retraining of Racehorses mark final year of Royal Ascot partnership

Ascot Racecourse Supports will once again donate £5,000 to Retraining of Racehorses for each winner that Ryan Moore rides this week

RoR is British horse racing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing. Last year, Ryan succeeded in winning six times across the meeting, equating to a charitable donation of £30,000.

“We are absolutely delighted that Ascot Racecourse Supports has chosen to partner with RoR once again for Royal Ascot. The visibility this initiative brings, combined with the generous financial support, plays a vital role in helping us drive forward our charitable mission. Feature Race Analysis

George Boughey’s star performer Bow Echo will face five other rivals to bid to maintain his perfect record. The mightily impressive 2000 Guineas winner at Newmarket makes his second start in Group 1 company and looks all the rage in the market after already beating the re-opposing Gstaad.

Gstaad, who won the Coventry Stakes as a juvenile on this card last year, was beaten by the market leader in the 2000 Guineas but quickly bounced back on home soil in the 2,000 Irish Guineas by three lengths. These two look set for battle once again, while Aidan O’Brien, who has landed this twice already in the last 10 years, also saddles Puerto Rico, who was fourth in the French equivalent at Longchamp.

Godolphin won this with Coroebus in 2021 and this year rely on the talented Talk Of New York He put in a career-best performance when winning the Listed Heron Stakes at Sandown by five-and-a-half lengths but now steps up markedly in Grade.

Among the outsiders are Lord Britain, who represents the newly formed training partnership of Ismail Mohammed and Jose Santos, and the Amo Racing-owned Power Blue, who finished fourth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas behind Gstaad.

Ascot unveils state-of-the-art jockey facilities

Ascot Racecourse is delighted to have completed a £2.5 million project to redevelop and refurbish the jockey facilities in time for the start of the 2026 Flat season.

The refurbishment has delivered world-class upgrades to the facilities in place for jockeys across the changing rooms, physio rooms, gym area, valet space and lounge suite. The changing rooms have been rebuilt from the ground up to meet modern standards in safeguarding, ergonomics, and operational flexibility with the existing facilities stripped out entirely

The project was shaped significantly by safeguarding mandates issued by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which now apply across every racecourse in the UK A shared central zone for valets to operate between the male and female changing areas has been designed to allow the female facilities to expand when required, with different configurations available depending on the day’s racing programme.

Dedicated under-18 cubicles have been incorporated, alongside carefully considered segregation and privacy measures throughout New ice baths have been installed across both male and female changing rooms,

alongside two dedicated physio rooms and a gym area that opens directly onto the valet tables – keeping jockeys and valets connected throughout the raceday. Saddle racks, wall-mounted hooks, additional benching and washing and drying equipment give the valets everything they need close to hand.

The new Lounge and Kitchen café-style space provides a quiet space for jockeys to rest throughout the day.

Nick Attenborough, Chair of the Professional Jockeys Association, said: “I’d like to thank the Trustees and Directors of Ascot for the superb new weighing room and changing facilities at the racecourse. These will make such a difference to the working lives of both our male and female jockeys. We understand that this upgrade came at very considerable cost when the sport is under financial pressure, so we greatly appreciate what’s been achieved.”

Hollie Doyle, one of British racing’s leading jockeys, said: “The new jockey changing rooms are really outstanding –the best I’ve seen in the UK.”

Fellow rider Tom Marquand was equally positive: “Ascot has done what they’ve always done – put jockeys in world-class changing facilities, as you’d expect at a racecourse of this calibre.”

Timeform Summary

A mouth-watering renewal of the Queen Anne. MORE THUNDER made giant strides forward in his first season with William Haggas last year, and his second to Notable Speech in the Lockinge on his first try at 1m fully confirms he belongs at the highest level. The stiffer 1m should play perfectly to his strong-finishing style and it’s reasonable to believe he can reverse the Lockinge form with Notable Speech, who may not be ideally suited by a return to Ascot. Opera Ballo is a fascinating runner, too.

A gelding operation has seen NIGHT RAIDER start to fulfil his immense early promise, supplementing his Newmarket win despite a slow start forcing a change of tactics in the Temple Stakes and he could be the answer. Australian representatives have enjoyed plenty of success over the years and Overpass (providing he copes with a bare 5f) has the form to be a major factor, while the re-application of headgear will also surely see the classy Asfoora in a much better light.
