Royal Ascot: A Brief History

“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”

These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event - Her Majesty’s Plate - was held here upon her request that very same year For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.

The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.

It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.

Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats - and today, the issuing of the Handbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.

Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.

Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.

2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.

Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005. The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006

In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring

Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes

In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year Further success for Queen Elizabeth II came in 2016 with Dartmouth winning the Hardwick Stakes

The Village Enclosure opened in 2017; the first new enclosure for 100 years offers racegoers a unique perspective from the centre of the track

2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.

2023 saw King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.

In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes was run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty

In 2025, the 200th anniversary of the Royal Procession was celebrated while in 2026 prize money has been raised to record levels with £10.65 million available across the 35-race programme, ensuring that Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the globe.

Race Histories

2.30pm The Chesham Stakes (Listed)

First run in 1919 and named in honour of the third Baron Chesham, the final Master of the Buckhounds from 1900 to 1901, the Chesham Stakes replaced the first leg of the Triennial Stakes, which had been run over five furlongs for two year olds. Now a Listed contest, the race takes place over the longer distance of seven furlongs and is restricted to youngsters whose sire has won over ten furlongs or further. In 2019, champion two year old Pinatubo stormed to victory in a track record time. The race now serves as the opening race on the Thursday card.

3.05pm The King George V Stakes (Handicap)

A handicap for middle distance performers, staged over one and a half miles for three-year-olds only. The initial running was in July 1946, as part of the fixture list expansion to include racing in July, September and October, before the race was transferred to Royal Ascot in 1948 The 2020 winner Hukum proved better than a handicapper in time, going on to Group 1 success. Meanwhile Desert Hero won the 2023 renewal for Their Majesties The King and The Queen - their first winner at the Royal Meeting.

3.40pm The Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2)

This race, which mirrors the conditions of the Oaks, is named after the fourth Baron Ribblesdale, Master of the Buckhounds from 1892 to 1895. First run in 1919, it was originally staged over a mile and open to three and four year olds. It is now restricted to Classic generation fillies and run over the longer distance of a mile and a half. Aidan O’Brien has dominated the race in recent years, securing three consecutive victories from 2023-25.

4.15pm The Gold Cup (Group 1)

Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup (which, contrary to popular opinion is not called the “Ascot Gold Cup”) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Staged over the marathon trip of two-and-a-half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses in Europe.

Many horses have distinguished themselves with multiple Gold Cup wins, enhancing the race’s reputation as a specialists’ event. Sagaro won three times in the 1970s and Stradivarius claimed his third straight success in 2020. But Yeats still stands tallest of all, becoming a four-time winner in 2009. Estimate won the 2013 Gold Cup for Queen Elizabeth II, becoming the first horse to win the Gold Cup for a reigning monarch.

4.50pm

The Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

First run in 1928 over the straight mile of the Royal Hunt Cup course and run under similar conditions today. Open to three-year old colts and geldings only, the Britannia is almost as popular these days as the Royal Hunt Cup. Docklands won the race in 2023 before going on to capture the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes in 2025, highlighting the calibre of talent the Britannia can produce.

5.35pm The Hampton Court Stakes (Group 3)

This 10-furlong event, restricted to three-year-olds, was originally part of the Saturday Heath Day card, under the title of the New Stakes, and joined Royal Ascot as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. It was rechristened The Tercentenary Stakes in 2011, when the racecourse celebrated 300 years since its inauguration and was also promoted from Listed to Group 3 in tandem. The race reverted to being the Hampton Court Stakes in 2017.

6.10pm The Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap)

One of six races added to the Royal Ascot program in 2020, the seven-furlong Buckingham Palace Handicap was reintroduced to the meeting after being removed in 2015 when The Commonwealth Cup was created. Available to three-year-olds and upwards, it was first established in 2002 when a fifth day was added to the meeting to mark the Golden Jubilee. In 2020 it opened the Royal Meeting and is now retained permanently as part of the schedule.

An Extraordinary Journey

There’s nothing more exciting than being here at Royal Ascot with the sound of the hooves, the roar of the crowd, and, of course, those incredible colours of the silks streaking by.

It’s been 243 years since jockeys first started wearing their silks at Ascot to identify horses and riders. And today silk is woven into the very DNA of this famous course. You see it everywhere - from the multi-coloured jerseys and caps galloping down the final furlong to the silk top hats in the Royal Enclosure to the smooth silk lawns that play host to hospitality for the tens of thousands who attend every year.

Silk is Royal Ascot in a nutshell - history, heritage and performance. A little out of the ordinary A little removed from the day to day. A little magical. And that’s what everyone loves so much about this incredible festival of sport

For these few glorious days, we get to exchange the cares of the world for sunshine, colour and pageantry We get to focus on the thrill of world class competition taking on the best of British. We get to sample the cuisine at the world’s most Michelin-adorned sporting event – 32 stars and counting. And, above all, we get to share in the collective joy as the crowd rises to its feet to acclaim the new Gold Cup winner. You can’t bottle those feelings Which is why we’re holding onto our partnership of Ascot for four more years – there’s nowhere else we’d rather be.

James Doyle: The Man For The Big Stage

For most jockeys, one Royal Ascot winner is enough to define a career For James Doyle, it took just 80 minutes to transform his.

It’s now more than a decade on from that extraordinary afternoon on Wednesday 19th June 2013, but the memory remains as vivid as ever Arriving that day without a Royal Ascot winner to his name, Doyle left having ridden three in a rowa breakthrough that changed everything.

“It arguably put me on the map, really I hadn’t had a sniff of a Royal Ascot winner before that day,” he recalls in an exclusive interview with Ascot Racecourse.

“I had three good rides and was quietly hopeful. To get three in a row was beyond my wildest dreams My feet didn’t touch the ground.”

It was a whirlwind couple of hours, starting in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Race, trophy lift, press room for questions, race again, with barely time to reset and gather his thoughts or tactics before the next contest But that winning feeling aboard Al Kazeem, who’d given Doyle his first British Group success the previous year, meant even more.

“He was one of the major horses in my career,” explains Doyle. “He taught me the competitiveness of Group 1 racing. A Shadwell horse [Mukhadram] slipped the field, and we had a bit of ground to make up, but I had a very willing partner on my side To win a Prince of Wales’s Stakes as my first Royal Ascot winner was pretty exceptional.”

Back in 2013 jockeys were permitted to ride at more than one meeting per dayand so after Belgian Bill’s Royal Hunt Cup success and then Rizeena’s Queen Mary Stakes victory at 5.00pm, Doyle had to hot-foot it to nearby Kempton Park for a ride in the 6.40pm. But he wasn’t going to miss out on the celebrations

“The car parks at Ascot are a very cool place to celebrate. So, I actually went from Kempton back to the car park and Belgian Bill’s owners and yeah, we had a couple of drinks…! Obviously, there was racing the next day, so we didn’t go mad, but it was a day I’ll never forget, for sure. ”

Raised in Lambourn and introduced to racing from a young age, his connection to the meeting goes back decades, with visits as a youngster instilling that passion for the sport that endures to this day. He recalls: “My mother used to bring me here when it was actually the old track,

I remember the old pre-parade ring and watching some amazing horses in the pre-parade ring. We used to always come on a Tuesday, for as long as I can remember, it was always a thing - the first day of Royal Ascot. And it’s the Olympics of our sport. It’s where it all comes together.”

Sitting in the Wathnan Racing private box, a luxurious space just past the winning line at Ascot, the 38-year-old is now the retained rider for the global racing stable owned by the Emir of Qatar He admits it was a bit of a gamble to leave Godolphin for a relatively unproven operation at the start of 2024, but he always believed that success would follow.

“I had to really put faith in the people that were at the top of Wathnan Racing, those being Oliver Tait, our manager, and Richard Brown, who I’ve known for quite a number of years - he’s always been on my side. He told me about the aspirations behind Wathnan Racing, which is all well and good, but it needs to come through. And exactly what they said at the time has happened. And each year we’ve built a bigger team, more quality. And our Royal Ascot team has got quite considerably larger

“It’s always nice to get a winner early in the week just to try and steady the ship a little bit But I think it’s to be expected. There’s a lot of money invested as well of course. Look, I think we always try and downplay it a little bit and say, ‘if we get one winner, we’re happy’ But in reality, they’re nice numbers to deal with.”

One of the more memorable moments of last year’s Royal Meeting came on the final day, with Doyle involved – for the wrong

reasons The ecstasy of Lazzat’s triumph in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes was quickly turned on its head, almost literally Says Doyle, with a sheepish grin: “After the winning line, he was good as gold. We turned around, we waved to the crowd a little bit, and we were just getting back to our jubilant trainer [Jerome Reynier] who pulled out the lovely gold sheet, the winning sheets that are presented to the winning horses. And like a matador, he whipped it out to chuck it on him, and he just spooked.

“I ended up landing on my back, which was quite embarrassing. And then the horse proceeded to do a couple of laps at the track, which was not very helpful considering the King and Queen were stood on the podium waiting to give out the winning trophies! I think it’s probably the only time a jockey would have returned to the winner’s enclosure to meet the monarch without the horse, so that was a little bit embarrassing.”

With a growing Wathnan squad of potential stars emerging, and Royal Ascot continuing to be the central focus, the next chapter is still very much being written. And there’s no more captivating stage to demonstrate your talents than Royal Ascot. Just ask Doyle.

“I was asked on the way in just to say one word about Royal Ascot, and without hesitation I said ‘magical’, because it really is the mixture of emotions you can go through. From arriving here in the car park to leaving, it can be so different. Some days you can walk away and you just think, ‘that was a disaster’ And then other days you just float home. It really is a magical place.”

Showcasing Sustainability

At Ascot Racecourse we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our events on every scale. This year, a dedicated area in the Queen Anne Enclosure will showcase our sustainability work to racegoers and provide them with an ideally placed hydration station in the shade.

To incentivise people to travel in a sustainable way, the first 50 racegoers that visit the area on each day will be able to claim a complimentary Royal Ascot water bottle if they have travelled to the racecourse by train, bus, electric car, bike, or walked.

Water bottles will also be available to purchase which can be used at the Hydration Stations around the site as we try to reduce the amount of single-use plastic on site. We will also have Sustainability Ambassadors on hand to talk about the various things we are doing to rescue our environmental impact.

Enable: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Horse

On Tuesday, Their Majesties The King and The Queen, alongside HH Prince Saud bin Khalid bin Abdullah Al Saud and HH Prince Abdullah bin Saud bin Khalid Al Saud, unveiled a statue of the legendary mare Enable on the trackside lawns.

A homebred in the iconic Juddmonte silks and trained by John Gosden, Enable is the only three-time winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes She was ridden on all but two of her starts by Frankie Dettori, who described her as ‘a once-in-alifetime horse’.

The bronze sculpture, created by Charlie Langton, is situated under the Royal Box and faces the famous winning line where she made history in 2020.

Every horse competing at Royal Ascot this week is fitted with two lightweight GPS tracking devices supplied by Longines Total Performance Data uses the live GPS data to power a range of real-time insights for fans, including the live winning probabilities displayed on racecourse screens throughout the race.

These live percentages are calculated using the horses’ positions, speeds and race dynamics, combined with millions of historical race performances, to estimate each runner’s chance of winning at any given moment. As the race develops, these probabilities update continuously, helping fans understand which horses are travelling strongly, gaining momentum, or facing an increasingly difficult task

After each race, you’ll also see a graphical summary of the winner’s performance, highlighting a selection of key speed and stride metrics that help explain exactly how the race was won.

What do the metrics tell us?

Early Speed

How quickly the horse accelerated to 30mph after the start.

Average Speed

The horse’s average speed over the entire race.

Top Speed

The highest speed recorded by the winner at any point during the race.

Late Speed

The horse’s average speed over the crucial final two furlongs.

Run-Out Speed

Measured exactly two seconds after crossing the finish line, this can provide an indication of how much momentum remained at the end of the race.

Fastest Rankings

Shows how each of the speed metrics above ranked against every other runner in the field.

Stride Frequency

Also known as cadence, this measures the number of strides taken per second. While there are exceptions, sprinters typically exhibit higher stride frequencies than horses competing over longer distances

Stride Length

The average distance covered with each stride. Longer-distance Flat horses often produce longer, less frequent strides than sprinters, although stride length is also influenced by the horse’s physical build, the racing surface, and the characteristics of the racecourse itself.

Feature Race Analysis

The staying division has been crying out for a new superstar, and Aidan O’Brien may well have found one in St Leger winner Scandinavia He has followed a path similar to that of the great Kyprios by winning the Saval Beg Stakes and looks the horse they all have to beat at the head of the market. Rahiebb was only a neck behind Scandinavia in last year’s St Leger, and the pair are set to renew their rivalry here. The son of Frankel impressed on his sole start this season when landing the Yorkshire Cup, with re-opposing rivals Al Nayyir (second) and Furthur (fourth) comfortably held on that occasion.

Last year’s winner Trawlerman was initially a doubt for the race, but John and Thady Gosden have given him the green light to defend his crown. He could hardly have been more impressive 12 months ago, cruising home by seven lengths, and this year his task could be made easier with Godolphin also saddling Dubai Future

Sweet William won the key trial for this race, the Sagaro Stakes, where he narrowly held off Caballo De Mar, who subsequently went on to land a Group 1 contest on his next start. Irish challengers Carmers and Al Riffa also warrant respect and could make their presence felt in what promises to be another highly competitive renewal of the prestigious Gold Cup, with the field off 11 concluded by the rank outsider Miss Alpilles

Ascot unveils state-of-the-art jockey facilities

Ascot Racecourse is delighted to have completed a £2.5 million project to redevelop and refurbish the jockey facilities in time for the start of the 2026 Flat season.

The refurbishment has delivered world-class upgrades to the facilities in place for jockeys across the changing rooms, physio rooms, gym area, valet space and lounge suite. The changing rooms have been rebuilt from the ground up to meet modern standards in safeguarding, ergonomics, and operational flexibility with the existing facilities stripped out entirely

The project was shaped significantly by safeguarding mandates issued by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which now apply across every racecourse in the UK A shared central zone for valets to operate between the male and female changing areas has been designed to allow the female facilities to expand when required, with different configurations available depending on the day’s racing programme.

Dedicated under-18 cubicles have been incorporated, alongside carefully considered segregation and privacy measures throughout New ice baths have been installed across both male and female changing rooms,

alongside two dedicated physio rooms and a gym area that opens directly onto the valet tables – keeping jockeys and valets connected throughout the raceday. Saddle racks, wall-mounted hooks, additional benching and washing and drying equipment give the valets everything they need close to hand.

The new Lounge and Kitchen café-style space provides a quiet space for jockeys to rest throughout the day.

Nick Attenborough, Chair of the Professional Jockeys Association, said: “I’d like to thank the Trustees and Directors of Ascot for the superb new weighing room and changing facilities at the racecourse. These will make such a difference to the working lives of both our male and female jockeys. We understand that this upgrade came at very considerable cost when the sport is under financial pressure, so we greatly appreciate what’s been achieved.”

Hollie Doyle, one of British racing’s leading jockeys, said: “The new jockey changing rooms are really outstanding –the best I’ve seen in the UK.”

Fellow rider Tom Marquand was equally positive: “Ascot has done what they’ve always done – put jockeys in world-class changing facilities, as you’d expect at a racecourse of this calibre.”

Aidan O’Brien has captured this prize in five of the last ten years and can add to the tally with the exciting AIX LA CHAPELLE who overcame greenness to make a winning start in a Curragh maiden and can take this step up in class in his stride. Stablemate South Dakota ran a race full of promise when a debut fourth at the same track and could emerge as the main danger. George Scott’s stylish Haydock scorer Sea Venture appeals as the pick of the home contingent ahead of outsider Whispering Moon.

Timeform Summary

INTO THE LIGHT and Heyzoom have both had the form of their latest run boosted and look ahead of their marks. There’s a slight doubt about the latter’s stamina for 1 1/2m so that tips the vote the way of Godolphin’s charge, who is already proven at the trip Ralph Beckett has won this race twice in recent years and Tierra Del Toro is next on the list after his good run in the London Gold Cup. Waterford Castle and Al Azd, another from the London Gold Cup, complete the shortlist. 1. INTO

Johanna Walsh promises to be suited by 1 1/2m and may prove best of the remainder.

Reserves at Royal Ascot

The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.

Reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.

Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage. Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.

Today’s race with a reserve running is The Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap)Winding Stream

All breeders of Stakes winners by a Tweenhills stallion will receive a credit to the value of the nomination to be used toward one or more of the stallions standing at Tweenhills*

Timeform Summary

A typically competitive renewal and preference is for GREAT ACCLAIM, who can build on his Victoria Cup effort and go one better here. The in-form Mezcala could have a plum draw and can make his presence felt once more, with Dance In The Storm and English Oak a couple of the fancies for the placings.

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026.

Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry This includes an estimated £1.98m to Ascot from 16th June to 20th June 2026.
