Royal Ascot: A Brief History
“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”
These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event - Her Majesty’s Plate - was held here upon her request that very same year For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats - and today, the issuing of the Handbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005. The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year Further success for Queen Elizabeth II came in 2016 with Dartmouth winning the Hardwick Stakes
The Village Enclosure opened in 2017; the first new enclosure for 100 years offers racegoers a unique perspective from the centre of the track
2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.
2023 saw King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.
In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes was run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty
In 2025, the 200th anniversary of the Royal Procession was celebrated while in 2026 prize money has been raised to record levels with £10.65 million available across the 35-race programme, ensuring that Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the globe.

Race Histories
The Norfolk Stakes (Group 2)
First run in 1843, this race was originally known as the New Stakes contested over just under four furlongs. It was renamed in 1973 in honour the Duke of Norfolk who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972. Open to two-year-olds, it was elevated to Group 2 status in 2006. In 2023, the race was won by 150-1 outsider Valiant Force. From 2026, the race moved from its Thursday slot to Saturday.
3.05pm The Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2)
Named after the fifth Earl of Hardwicke, Master of the Buckhounds between 1874 and 1879, the race was first run in 1879. The Group 2 contest continues to attract the best older middle-distance horses and is often an informative guide to the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July. It is run with no Group 1 or 2 winners’ penalties as a quasi-Group 1 race with top level horses regularly competing.
3.40pm
The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Group 1)
First run in 1868, this six-furlong contest was originally named the Cork and Orrery Stakes after Lord Cork, another Master of the Buckhounds. In 2002 Royal Ascot’s most prestigious sprint was renamed and elevated to Group 1 status to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. In 2023 it was permanently renamed in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. Now worth £1 million in prize money, it is routinely won by some of the best sprinters in the world, including Black Caviar, Undrafted, Blue Point and Lazzat.
4.20pm The Jersey Stakes (Group 3)
The Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919. Named after the fourth Earl of Jersey, who was the Master of the Buckhounds between 1782 and 1783. This specialist seven-furlong contest is framed for three-year-olds who have often competed at the top level, including in the Guineas. The likes of Ribchester, Expert Eye and Creative Force all won the race before going on to Group 1 glory elsewhere.
5.00pm The Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
The inaugural running of the Wokingham Stakes took place in 1813, making this race the oldest handicap at Royal Ascot. This famous sprint is named after the market town seven miles from Ascot Racecourse, and the first dual winner was appropriately also named Wokingham (1881 and 1882). Over the years, the race has developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive handicap and one of the major betting heats of the season.
5.35pm
The Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap)
The penultimate contest at Royal Ascot was among the six prizes added to the race programme in 2020 and one of three newly named contests to be staged. The Golden Gates are the ceremonial entrance point as the Royal Procession arrives at the top of Ascot’s famous Straight Mile. Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race title which is run over a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds only. The inaugural running proved a high-class contest with the winner, Highland Chief, subsequently being placed at Group 2 level.
6.10pm The Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions)
Run over the marathon trip just short of two-and-three-quarter miles, the Queen Alexandra Stakes is not only the longest race of the meeting, but also the longest contest run under Flat racing rules. Named after the consort of King Edward VII, the race was first run in 1864 as the Alexandra Plate over three miles. It will always be associated with Brown Jack, arguably Royal Ascot’s greatest equine legend, who won the race on six consecutive occasions between 1929 and 1934. The Queen Alexandra Stakes always closes the meeting and, perhaps because of its extreme distance in a time when so much emphasis is on speed, it has become a national institution and is affectionately supported by regulars.

Royal Ascot: Global Contenders
Over the last 25 years, any sprinter making the journey from Australia to Royal Ascot has been firmly on the radar when it comes to finding winners. From Choisir’s historic double in 2003, through the likes of Miss Andretti, Black Caviar and Nature Strip, and ending most recently with Asfoora in 2024, horses from Down Under have dominated the sprinting scene in Berkshire. Indeed, four days before Black Caviar’s dramatic success in 2012, Little Bridge – bred, born and originally trained in New Zealandwon the then-King’s Stand Stakes for Hong Kong trainer Danny Shum.
This year, those two countries combine to provide a hot favourite.
Joliestar may be based at Chris Waller’s Sydney training yard but with the handler himself a Kiwi, and owners Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay also hailing from New Zealand, this is very much a
joint production. As Sir Brendan puts it: “We feel like we’re the racing All Blacks at the moment!”
The man on board also hails from New Zealand. James McDonald has ridden Joliestar on her last seven starts including three victories from three this year – two of them at Group 1 level. Says McDonald: “She’s well named, she is a star She’s got this amazing race-winning record at the moment. She’s won all the best sprint races here in Australia. She’s won a Group 1 over a mile. The six furlongs at Ascot is just going to be, you would think, tailor-made for her. Especially that last furlong. She’s at the peak of her powers She’s a five-year-old, well-matured, ready to travel, and she is trained by an absolute master.” With their star mare proving better than ever this year, the Lindsays felt they couldn’t turn down the opportunity of glory on the biggest stage, with Lady Jo admitting: “We’re very fortunate to have a horse that can actually go to Ascot. The most exciting thing is getting to the races on a race day and watching her win.”
Sir Brendan adds: “It’s just too big of an opportunity to come from Australia, to be part of all this, and turn it down. It’s an adventure alright, and we can’t wait to get on the plane and start the adventure Life’s about making new memories This is going to be a new memory that we can make together. This is next-level stuff compared to what we are used to.”
Joliestar will be just one of the star attractions in a high-quality renewal of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, where
Joliestar worked on the Ascot track last Friday ahead of today’s Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes
Japan came agonisingly close to a first Royal Ascot winner last year
Satono Reve was the hot favourite to become Japan’s lucky 13th runner at the Royal Meeting, with journalist and broadcaster Naohiro Goda in attendance for that history-making bid. He explained: “He’s one of the best sprinters in Japan’s history I was very excited, a Japanesetrained horse has never won a race at Royal Ascot. Joao Moreira started to make ground on the stands side, and I lost my mind. I shouted and hit the desk, ‘come on, come on’!
Dreams would be shattered though as France’s Lazzat held on to continue the drought of Japanese winners. But Goda is convinced that the attraction of the week means that duck will soon be broken, saying: “For horseracing fans in Japan, it’s a dream to attend Royal Ascot once in their lives. And it’s a dream for all owners and trainers to have a runner at Royal Ascot. The competition this year is as tough as last year, but I think he has a good chance
to become the first Japanese-trained winner at Royal Ascot.”
And McDonald knows the challenge he is likely to face when piloting Joliestar, adding: “Satono Reve, he’s competed everywhere around the world, he’s got the best form lines in terms of behind Ka Ying Rising, you can’t get better than that.”
McDonald will also be well aware of Overpass’ talents Fourth behind Joliestar in the T J Smith Stakes in April, the Australia-based, Bjorn Baker-trained seven-year-old finished third in the King Charles III Stakes on Tuesday and is declared to run again today over this slightly longer trip - which could suit him even better
The strong international challenge is what has cemented Royal Ascot’s enduring legacy as a global spectacle – that very much looks like continuing this year
You can watch the full series of Royal Ascot: Global Contenders on the Ascot Racecourse YouTube channel.

Every horse competing at Royal Ascot this week is fitted with two lightweight GPS tracking devices supplied by Longines Total Performance Data uses the live GPS data to power a range of real-time insights for fans, including the live winning probabilities displayed on racecourse screens throughout the race.
These live percentages are calculated using the horses’ positions, speeds and race dynamics, combined with millions of historical race performances, to estimate each runner’s chance of winning at any given moment. As the race develops, these probabilities update continuously, helping fans understand which horses are travelling strongly, gaining momentum, or facing an increasingly difficult task
After each race, you’ll also see a graphical summary of the winner’s performance, highlighting a selection of key speed and stride metrics that help explain exactly how the race was won.
What do the metrics tell us?
Early Speed
How quickly the horse accelerated to 30mph after the start.
Average Speed
The horse’s average speed over the entire race.
Top Speed
The highest speed recorded by the winner at any point during the race.
Late Speed
The horse’s average speed over the crucial final two furlongs.
Run-Out Speed
Measured exactly two seconds after crossing the finish line, this can provide an indication of how much momentum remained at the end of the race.
Fastest Rankings
Shows how each of the speed metrics above ranked against every other runner in the field.
Stride Frequency
Also known as cadence, this measures the number of strides taken per second. While there are exceptions, sprinters typically exhibit higher stride frequencies than horses competing over longer distances
Stride Length
The average distance covered with each stride. Longer-distance Flat horses often produce longer, less frequent strides than sprinters, although stride length is also influenced by the horse’s physical build, the racing surface, and the characteristics of the racecourse itself.

Feature Race Analysis
Saturday’s feature will see 19 go to post over six furlongs in what promises to be a fascinating spectacle. Overpass will try to improve on his third-placed finish from earlier in the week. The Australian-raider looks all about speed but may find this a stretch of stamina. The current favourite and fellow Australian representative Joliestar will bid to continue a fine week for James McDonald. The five-year-old has really come into her own this season, and the mare bids for her fourth straight success.
William Haggas’ five-year-old Lake Forest looks the most likely of the British representatives according to the market. He made a successful return at Haydock when taking Listed glory, but still needs to prove he has the speed after being campaigned over further.
The Wathnan pair Flora Of Bermuda and Kind Of Blue will likely prove popular once more. The former finished third in this contest last year and she can go close, while Kind Of Blue offers a similar profile and was given a nice pipe-opener at York last time out Sajir and Stolen Kiss are closely matched on their French form and can both go well but the strongest International runner could prove to be last year’s runner up Satono Reve once again.

Ascot unveils state-of-the-art jockey facilities
Ascot Racecourse is delighted to have completed a £2.5 million project to redevelop and refurbish the jockey facilities in time for the start of the 2026 Flat season.
The refurbishment has delivered world-class upgrades to the facilities in place for jockeys across the changing rooms, physio rooms, gym area, valet space and lounge suite. The changing rooms have been rebuilt from the ground up to meet modern standards in safeguarding, ergonomics, and operational flexibility with the existing facilities stripped out entirely
The project was shaped significantly by safeguarding mandates issued by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which now apply across every racecourse in the UK A shared central zone for valets to operate between the male and female changing areas has been designed to allow the female facilities to expand when required, with different configurations available depending on the day’s racing programme.
Dedicated under-18 cubicles have been incorporated, alongside carefully considered segregation and privacy measures throughout New ice baths have been installed across both male and female changing rooms,
alongside two dedicated physio rooms and a gym area that opens directly onto the valet tables – keeping jockeys and valets connected throughout the raceday. Saddle racks, wall-mounted hooks, additional benching and washing and drying equipment give the valets everything they need close to hand.
The new Lounge and Kitchen café-style space provides a quiet space for jockeys to rest throughout the day.
Nick Attenborough, Chair of the Professional Jockeys Association, said: “I’d like to thank the Trustees and Directors of Ascot for the superb new weighing room and changing facilities at the racecourse. These will make such a difference to the working lives of both our male and female jockeys. We understand that this upgrade came at very considerable cost when the sport is under financial pressure, so we greatly appreciate what’s been achieved.”
Hollie Doyle, one of British racing’s leading jockeys, said: “The new jockey changing rooms are really outstanding –the best I’ve seen in the UK.”
Fellow rider Tom Marquand was equally positive: “Ascot has done what they’ve always done – put jockeys in world-class changing facilities, as you’d expect at a racecourse of this calibre.”

CARRY THE FLAG is the obvious one having been reeled in only late by Tuesday’s Coventry winner Great Barrier Reef in the Marble Hill at the Curragh. This stiff 5f should be ideal for the son of No Nay Never (winner of this race in 2013) and he can provide Aidan O’Brien with a record-breaking fifth win. The remarkably consistent and versatile KALPANA can confirm last year’s strong King George form with Jan Brueghel and record a third Ascot success. The Ballydoyle duo should ensure this is a thorough test, which could play into the hands of Ethical Diamond, who showed an impressive turn of foot off an end-to-end gallop when successful in the Breeders’ Cup last year.

Timeform Summary
A smashing renewal of the Wokingham with any number holding chances. REALIGN had clearly come on plenty for his reappearance and made his class tell when scoring in good style at Carlisle 3 weeks ago and rates a big player again under a penalty. His stablemate Binhareer is feared on the back of an excellent York second, with Double Rush another of definite interest having made it 2-2 for Andrew Balding at Newmarket in May. Sondad, Far Above Dream and Completely Random also make each-way appeal.

Wathnan Racing purchased SAHARA KING and Lost Boys after they finished 1-2 in last month’s London Gold Cup and that pair might fight out the finish to another top handicap The former was narrowly denied at Newbury but is seemingly preferred by James Doyle and is taken to turn the tables in new cheekpieces. Folk Pageant, Harmonics and Spyce, another from the London Gold Cup, are a few of many others to consider in this red-hot race. 1. SAHARA
