Royal Ascot: A Brief History

“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”

These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event - Her Majesty’s Plate - was held here upon her request that very same year For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.

The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.

It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.

Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats - and today, the issuing of the Handbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.

Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.

Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.

2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.

Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005. The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006

In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring

Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes

In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year Further success for Queen Elizabeth II came in 2016 with Dartmouth winning the Hardwick Stakes

The Village Enclosure opened in 2017; the first new enclosure for 100 years offers racegoers a unique perspective from the centre of the track

2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.

2023 saw King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse. It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.

In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes was run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty

In 2025, the 200th anniversary of the Royal Procession was celebrated while in 2026 prize money has been raised to record levels with £10.65 million available across the 35-race programme, ensuring that Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the globe.

Race Histories

2.30pm The Albany Stakes (Group 3)

This race was first run in 2002 as the Henry Carnarvon Stakes, honouring the former racing manager of Queen Elizabeth II, and proved so successful that it was promoted to Group 3 status in 2005. Restricted to two-year-old fillies, the six-furlong event provides one of the first opportunities of the season for promising types and often throws up 1,000 Guineas horses. In 2022, Mawj finished a close second to Meditate before returning the following year to win the 1,000 Guineas.

3.05pm The Commonwealth Cup (Group 1)

The Commonwealth Cup was a completely new race in 2015 and joined the King’s Stand Stakes and the then Platinum Jubilee Stakes to become the third Group 1 sprint at Royal Ascot. The race, run over six furlongs, is restricted to three-year-old colts and fillies and was put in place as a Europe-wide measure to create a better Pattern for young sprinters and improve the quality of sprint races across the continent. It has been won by some top-class horses who went on to enjoy Group 1 success in open company including Muhaarar, Advertise and Shaquille.

3.40pm The Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap)

Originally the Bessborough Stakes, named after the fifth Earl of Bessborough, who was Master of the Buckhounds between 1848 and 1866, the race was renamed the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes in 1999. First run in 1914 as a five furlong event for two year olds, it has since evolved into a middle distance handicap for three year olds and upwards.

4.20pm

The Coronation Stakes (Group 1)

First run in 1840 to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Victoria two years previously, the Coronation Stakes is for three-year-old fillies over a mile. It regularly attracts the winners of the British, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas and has also started to attract some of the top American fillies. It was promoted to Group 1 level in 1988. Recent winners often arrive with classic form, with Sky Lantern, Alpha Centauri, and Tahiyra all completing Guineas–Coronation doubles. In 2017 Winter achieved a rare treble by winning the British 1000 Guineas, the Irish 1,000 Guineas, and the Coronation Stakes.

5.00pm The Sandringham Stakes (Handicap)

Originally registered as the Fern Hill Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot It was renamed after the Norfolk Royal residence when the Royal Meeting was expanded to five days as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. This is a competitive handicap over a mile, limited to three-year-old fillies only.

5.35pm The King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2)

Formerly known, and still colloquially referred to as the Ascot Derby, this race was inaugurated in 1834 and regularly featured horses of both sexes that had competed in the middle-distance Classics. First run as the King Edward VII Stakes in 1926, it is now restricted to three-year-old colts and geldings. The 2024 winner, Calandagan, developed into a top class performer, going on to Group 1 successes in Britain, Dubai and Japan.

6.10pm The Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Handicap)

The final race on Friday was among six added to the Royal Ascot race programme in 2020 A five-furlong sprint for three-year olds Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race name, which recognises the Monarchy’s official Scottish residence. A race with similar conditions used to be run regularly on the Saturday Heath Day card and featured as part of the full Royal Ascot programme in 2002 and 2003 as the Balmoral Handicap. Upon its return in 2020, it was won by Art Power who had Group success in Ireland before Group 1 victory back at Ascot in 2023.

Honouring our Heroes

Ascot Racecourse is delighted to welcome the three principal single-Service Armed Forces charities to Royal Ascot: the Army Benevolent Fund, RAF Benevolent Fund and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.

These organisations provide vital lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans and their families, delivering practical, emotional and financial help when it is needed most.

Ascot Racecourse is proud to support their work through donations linked to selected beverage sales, contributions from concessionaires and on-site fundraising, raising over £400,000 in the past nine years. We also offer a 2-for-1 ticket initiative for serving military personnel on Friday and a dedicated Armed Forces Bar.

Today, the charities are our official bucket collectors, with volunteers across the racecourse. If you are able to support them, please do consider donating.

Thank you for your support

Army Benevolent FundGeorge’s Story

Sergeant George Pas served as a Reservist with 6th Battalion The Rifles for over 14 years, completing tours of Afghanistan, Ukraine, America and Cyprus

But in 2011, just before George was due to start his third tour of Afghanistan, disaster struck. He was involved in a serious road traffic accident and sustained catastrophic injuries, which left him paralysed from the chest down.

Yet despite the debilitating nature of his injuries, George’s thirst for a challenge has never waned. Determined to enable George to continue doing as many outdoor activities as possible, the ABF helped fund an Overlander, an electrically powered, off-road mobility vehicle designed to tackle extreme outdoor surfaces; an ideal tool for an injured, but intrepid, former soldier.

“The ABF gave me more than a piece of equipment; it gave me a part of my life back that was gone. It gave my children a part of their dad back that they had lost.”

Now, George is a dedicated ABF ambassador, helping raise funds and awareness, and will be representing the charity at Royal Ascot. Find out more at armybenevolentfund.org

Every horse competing at Royal Ascot this week is fitted with two lightweight GPS tracking devices supplied by Longines Total Performance Data uses the live GPS data to power a range of real-time insights for fans, including the live winning probabilities displayed on racecourse screens throughout the race.

These live percentages are calculated using the horses’ positions, speeds and race dynamics, combined with millions of historical race performances, to estimate each runner’s chance of winning at any given moment. As the race develops, these probabilities update continuously, helping fans understand which horses are travelling strongly, gaining momentum, or facing an increasingly difficult task

After each race, you’ll also see a graphical summary of the winner’s performance, highlighting a selection of key speed and stride metrics that help explain exactly how the race was won.

What do the metrics tell us?

Early Speed

How quickly the horse accelerated to 30mph after the start.

Average Speed

The horse’s average speed over the entire race.

Top Speed

The highest speed recorded by the winner at any point during the race.

Late Speed

The horse’s average speed over the crucial final two furlongs.

Run-Out Speed

Measured exactly two seconds after crossing the finish line, this can provide an indication of how much momentum remained at the end of the race.

Fastest Rankings

Shows how each of the speed metrics above ranked against every other runner in the field.

Stride Frequency

Also known as cadence, this measures the number of strides taken per second. While there are exceptions, sprinters typically exhibit higher stride frequencies than horses competing over longer distances

Stride Length

The average distance covered with each stride. Longer-distance Flat horses often produce longer, less frequent strides than sprinters, although stride length is also influenced by the horse’s physical build, the racing surface, and the characteristics of the racecourse itself.

Showcasing Sustainability

At Ascot Racecourse we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our events on every scale. This year, a dedicated area in the Queen Anne Enclosure will showcase our sustainability work to racegoers and provide them with an ideally placed hydration station in the shade.

To incentivise people to travel in a sustainable way, the first 50 racegoers that visit the area on each day will be able to claim a complimentary Royal Ascot water bottle if they have travelled to the racecourse by train, bus, electric car, bike, or walked.

Water bottles will also be available to purchase which can be used at the Hydration Stations around the site as we try to reduce the amount of single-use plastic on site. We will also have Sustainability Ambassadors on hand to talk about the various things we are doing to rescue our environmental impact.

Andrew Balding’s Enduring Royal Ascot Legacy

Few trainers approach Royal Ascot with greater depth of experience than Andrew Balding, whose long-established Park House Stables operation, passed through generations of the family, continues to deliver runners capable of competing at the very highest level With a team that carries genuine hopes throughout the week, Balding arrives at this year’s Royal Meeting with a familiar blend of anticipation and realism.

“Excitement is always the overriding feeling,” he says “Royal Ascot is such an important fixture for anyone training Flat horses It’s what the first half of the season builds towards, and it’s something everyone in the yard looks forward to.”

That said, even the most promising team can find the meeting a searching test Winners are notoriously hard to come by,

and Balding is quick to underline just how competitive the week can be.

“You can feel you’re going there with a strong hand, but it’s never straightforward. The reality is that it’s very difficult to get winners at Royal Ascot. When you do, there’s a huge sense of relief, especially with the first one of the week That’s the one that really matters, because once you have that on the board, you can begin to enjoy the meeting a bit more. ”

A significant part of that pressure comes from the expectations of owners, many of whom have Royal Ascot firmly in their sights when placing horses into training.

“For most owners, competing at Royal Ascot is a major ambition,” Balding explains “It’s often the reason they are involved in the sport at this level. You want to do well for them all year round, of course, but there’s an added significance here because of what the meeting represents

“You’re thinking about Royal Ascot through the winter, working out which horses might be suited to which races,” he explains “Not every plan comes together, but when one does, it makes all the effort worthwhile.”

Among those owners, none carried more resonance than Queen Elizabeth II, for whom Balding trained the Windsor Castle Stakes winner Tactical in 2020 That success came under the unusual circumstances of a behind-closed-doors meeting during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet it remains a standout moment.

“It was a very different year,” he recalls “Horses hadn’t had the usual preparation, and Tactical had only run once beforehand. That experience proved valuable, and he

ran very well. It was a proud moment for everyone involved, even without the crowd.”

“I remember ringing the switchboard at Buckingham Palace and they obviously have a number identification. So, the lady who was the operator knew it was me. And I said, ‘is it possible to speak to Her Majesty?’ And she said: ‘For you Mr Balding, anything’s possible this year!’

“I was very lucky to inherit her as an owner from my father and my grandfather before, that trained horses for her And she was one of a kind, a very, very special person and it was a huge honour to train for her, as it is for the King and Queen now. We’re lucky to have been given their support as well and it’s a great privilege.”

Balding’s Royal Ascot record includes plenty of winners, with top-level success provided by fillies such as Alcohol Free, who produced a dominant performance in the 2021 Coronation Stakes Her victory came in testing conditions, but one that suited her strengths

“The rain was relentless that day, and there was even a question about whether racing would go ahead,” he says “In the end, conditions played to her advantage. She handled the ground very well and put up a really impressive performance. Winning a Group 1 at Royal Ascot is something very special.”

Success at the meeting, however, depends on far more than ability alone Balding emphasises the importance of the many variables that come into play, particularly in large, competitive fields.

“You need a horse with real class, but you also need luck,” he says “Big fields on the straight course, the way a race unfoldsall of these factors can make a difference. There are plenty of occasions where things don’t quite go your way

“Walking back into the winner’s enclosure at Ascot, with that atmosphere, is something you don’t take for granted. Even winning a handicap here can feel every bit as satisfying as a big race somewhere else.

“It’s not just about the trainer or the jockey There are so many people involved in getting a horse to the race in the right condition. When things go right, it’s a shared achievement across the whole operation.”

Royal Ascot’s international dimension has added another layer to the challenge, with runners arriving from around the world to test themselves against the best of Britain and Ireland.

“It’s good for the meeting,” Balding says “We race abroad and are made very welcome in most places, so it’s right that others can come here and compete Travelling horses is not easy, and it’s something that deserves a lot of credit.”

Asked to sum up the meeting, Balding does so with his usual forthright clarity: “Unique, incomparable and, when you’re fortunate enough to win, overwhelming.”

Feature Race Analysis

The Coronation Stakes could be one of the races of the week as two extraordinary fillies meet for the third time for the Coolmore team. Precise and True Love, the 1-2 in the Irish 1, 000 Guineas at the Curragh, go head-to-head once more. Prior to that, True Love had beaten her stablemate in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Classic winners should fight out the finish.

Balantina is a fascinating contender on her seasonal return, having signed off her juvenile campaign with a polished success in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Unbeaten in two starts and partnered by Oisin Murphy, she remains open to further progress.

Touleen, who finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas, has acquitted herself well in top-class company and could be the main threat to the two strong fancies. She finished ahead of the Jaber Abdullah-pair Rose Ghaiyyath and Timeforshowcasing and it’s difficult to see the placings reversed. Black Caviar Gold is equipped with first-time headgear but has it all to prove on official ratings, as does Sukanya and Moon Target.

Aidan O’Brien: 100 Royal Ascot Winners and Counting

Yesterday, the incomparable Aidan O’Brien saddled his 100th winner at the Royal Meeting when Scandinavia won the Gold Cup.

The Ballydoyle trainer’s Royal Ascot journey started nearly 30 years ago when Harbour Master took the 1997 Coventry Stakes. Since then, his success has been unparalleled, with 13 Top Trainer titles including eight in the ten-year stretch from 2015 to 2024. He has only gone winless at two Royal Meetings, in 1998 and 2003

Plenty of his legendary names have graced the Ascot turf in the last three decades but there’s perhaps none more synonymous with Royal Ascot than Yeats, who won four consecutive Gold Cups from 2006 to 2009 – the only horse in history to achieve that feat

Congratulations to Aidan and everyone at Ballydoyle on reaching this truly remarkable milestone.

Ascot unveils state-of-the-art jockey facilities

Ascot Racecourse is delighted to have completed a £2.5 million project to redevelop and refurbish the jockey facilities in time for the start of the 2026 Flat season.

The refurbishment has delivered world-class upgrades to the facilities in place for jockeys across the changing rooms, physio rooms, gym area, valet space and lounge suite. The changing rooms have been rebuilt from the ground up to meet modern standards in safeguarding, ergonomics, and operational flexibility with the existing facilities stripped out entirely

The project was shaped significantly by safeguarding mandates issued by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which now apply across every racecourse in the UK A shared central zone for valets to operate between the male and female changing areas has been designed to allow the female facilities to expand when required, with different configurations available depending on the day’s racing programme.

Dedicated under-18 cubicles have been incorporated, alongside carefully considered segregation and privacy measures throughout New ice baths have been installed across both male and female changing rooms,

alongside two dedicated physio rooms and a gym area that opens directly onto the valet tables – keeping jockeys and valets connected throughout the raceday. Saddle racks, wall-mounted hooks, additional benching and washing and drying equipment give the valets everything they need close to hand.

The new Lounge and Kitchen café-style space provides a quiet space for jockeys to rest throughout the day.

Nick Attenborough, Chair of the Professional Jockeys Association, said: “I’d like to thank the Trustees and Directors of Ascot for the superb new weighing room and changing facilities at the racecourse. These will make such a difference to the working lives of both our male and female jockeys. We understand that this upgrade came at very considerable cost when the sport is under financial pressure, so we greatly appreciate what’s been achieved.”

Hollie Doyle, one of British racing’s leading jockeys, said: “The new jockey changing rooms are really outstanding –the best I’ve seen in the UK.”

Fellow rider Tom Marquand was equally positive: “Ascot has done what they’ve always done – put jockeys in world-class changing facilities, as you’d expect at a racecourse of this calibre.”
