TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

Just a small field here may see the race turn tactical, but if AL SHAHAM lives up to his breeding (by multiple Group 1 winner Blue Point out of a Pivotal mare), then he could make a winning debut. Angel Dreamer struggled to land a blow on debut at Newcastle but is entitled to have come forward for that effort, and he could beat Spartacus Force to the second spot.

WIN: AL SHAHAM

RACE 2

DANGER: ANGEL DREAMER

Rajak steps up in class after landing the odds last time out by over six lengths at Bath, but he has an added 6lb from the handicapper SOCIAL EXCLUSION kept on strongly overshorterwhen beaten a head into third at Windsorand, if she gets the sixth furlong, she might be able to strike at this level. Baggot Street looks the pick for third.

RACE 3

BOSPHORUS ROSE has won three times since being stepped up in trip, including last time out by three and a half lengths at Catterick. She carries a 6lb penalty here, but Poppy Scott claims 7lb in the saddle which might give her the edge. Say What You See ran on strongly to win by a neck at Ayr latest and is worth a try over this new distance, though Windsor second Silver Chamber may be the bigger danger

WIN: BOSPHORUS ROSE

DANGER: SILVER CHAMBER

RACE 4

Canaria Queen struck in a classified stakes at Nottingham last time and is an interesting contender back in the handicap ranks, but the vote goes to LATIN FIVE.The eight-year-old showed more when making the frame at Beverley last time and could take advantage off an unchanged mark. Mrs Bagerran isn’t ruled out either.

WIN: LATIN FIVE

RACE 5

DANGER: CANARIA QUEEN

Ferrari Gold took a step forward from herdebut effort to shed the maiden tag at Chester latest, and should mount a bold bid despite her penalty. However, ABLOOM has been unfortunate to finish second on each ofherlast two starts, most recentlyat Newmarket, and looks the way to go Renewal wasn’t disgraced in third at Kempton and is far from out of it either

WIN: ABLOOM

RACE 6

DANGER: FERRARI GOLD

BETA READER ran too badly to be true when finishing last of nine at Newcastle last month and may be better judged on his third at Wetherby prior to that Charlie Johnston’s three-year-old returns to turf in first-time cheekpieces and could prove hard to beat. Homeland could only manage fifth at Beverley on his most recent outing and might get closer off 1lb lower. Sweet Cicely completes the shortlist.

WIN: BETA READER

DANGER: HOMELAND

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for two-year-olds only which have been rated from 0 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Our fourth race today is held in memory of David Chapman, a stalwart of Yorkshire racing who passed away in 2011.

David is fondly remembered as an excellent trainer and pioneer with a reputation for taking underachieving and often problematic horses under his wing and turning them into regular winners.

David was especially renowned for his talent for training sprinters including Chaplins Club who recorded 24 wins, including nine in one season on two occasions! Sharp Hat, Soaked, Glencroft, Redoubtable, Soba and Quito were just a few other prolific performers to benefit from David’s training.

David’s granddaughter Ruth Carr has followed in her Grandfather’s footsteps, ensuring that winners continue to flow from the Mowbray House Farm base.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 52 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

PLAY SMARTER

Dual C&D winner LATIN FIVE signalled that his turn is near when an unlucky third at Beverley a fortnight ago, putting in good late work after encountering traffic problems at a crucial stage. There are no firm guarantees that he will build on that given his up-and-down profile, but the risk is worth taking in a race of this nature. Canaria Queen has to be feared on the back of a recent success and Mrs Bagerran will also be a threat if able to shrug off a below-par run last time.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

FERRARI GOLD admittedly had the run of things when landing a 10.3f Chester novice recently, but that nevertheless represented a significant step forward from her debut third and the Showcasing filly may well improve again. She is taken to defy the penalty back down in trip here, with Renewal next on the list ahead of Abloom and newcomer Beauty Blossom.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 60. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

MADRIGAL MOMENT hasn’t shown much in her three starts to date, but it appears as though she has been brought along with handicaps in mind. Now pitched into one off a lowly opening mark and with this step up in trip expected to be in her favour, she is taken to strike Homeland is feared most, while fellow handicap debutante Noss Mayo may prove best of the rest.
