Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse. It’s been a quick turnaround for the team following yesterday’s racing, but we are delighted to be back with another exciting afternoon of action on the track. Our third race is the 21 Engineer Regiment Sapper Nursery Handicap, and we are pleased to welcome members of our local regiment for their annual visit – a tradition that has been part of our calendar for well over 30 years. We hope they enjoy their afternoon with us once again. Meanwhile, our fourth race, the Ripon Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse Handicap, features a number of previous Course & Distance winners, alongside a raft of runners who have won over this distance elsewhere. It promises to be an exciting contest. On the bandstand, we are delighted to be joined by Katie James, so please do pop by and enjoy her performances throughout the afternoon. As the season draws to a close, it’s hard to believe we now have just one ﬁxture remaining in 2026: the ever-popular Theakston Beer Festival on Saturday 26th September. Looking ahead, our dates for the 2027 season are printed on the back of your racecard, so do take a look and make a note of them in your diary. Cosmos Raj returned to winning ways at Redcar and is well drawn to have every chance of following up, but the vote goes to HIS FINEST HOUR. Tina Jackson’s inmate ran better than his odds suggested he would when ﬁnishing second over a mile here and can capitalise on an unchanged rating. Poet’s Dawn beat the selection over C&D last month, but has been out of form since and needs to bounce back.

Kumharas changed hands for 200,000gns as a foal and is bred to be quick so she needs to be watched closely in the betting. However, EMPRESS PRINCESS shaped with lots of promise when only ﬁnding an unbeaten rival too good on her introduction at Beverley and, with normal improvement, she will prove hard to beat. Standard setter American Psycho is another to note.

Garden Oasis should run his usual honest race and isn’t without a chance, while Donna Nook won on her only previous start here. CATTON LADY is a bit more interesting, though, as she ran on strongly to score over 7f at Ayr and shouldn’t be inconvenienced by going back up in trip given the manner of that performance. Keep an eye on Kiss Me My Love too.

ALMARADA PRINCE usually runs well in defeat and it was another solid performance at York latest when he claimed second. He certainly deserves to win a race like this and won’t get many better opportunities. Farandaway is another consistent performer to add to the shortlist, and dual course scorer Goyard could go well now connections reach for a ﬁrst-time tongue-tie.

Secret Guest ﬁnished fourth in this grade at Newmarket and has dropped to an attractive mark. Top Juggler is a player based on his Chester success two starts ago, but YES I’M MALI makes plenty of appeal. David O’Meara’s charge was just touched off in a warmer event at Thirsk last Friday and as long as the four-year-old copes with this quick turnaround, he could prove hard to beat.

Lexington Boom took a pleasant step forward to get off the mark at Beverley and is respected on his nursery bow, but the one who appeals most is STAR PEOPLE. The son of Sioux Nation was beaten by the narrowest of margins over this trip at Newcastle and is just 3lb higher for that effort. Ayr victor Roman Crystal completes the shortlist.

FEMME FATALE will no doubt prove popular and a big run is expected assuming she can transfer her good recent all-weather form back to turf. She’s clearly improved for going up to 2m and might be able to gain a breakthrough win on the grass. Si White won under this rider at Southwell in July and cannot be given up on yet, despite letting favourite-backers down twice subsequently. Twilight Safari is another to consider.

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Since 2008, Ripon has proudly served as the home of 21 Engineer Regiment, continuing the British Army’s century long presence in the city. The Regiment plays a critical role in the Armed Forces ability to live, move and ﬁght, backed up by the highly skilled Sappers deploying on a wide range of Operations. Today our moto is ‘Ubique’, which is the Latin for ‘everywhere’ which remains relevant as ever. Over the past two decades 21 Engineer Regiment has deployed on multiple tours of Afghanistan and Iraq along with Humanitarian missions to South Sudan. In addition the Regiment played an integral part to the Governments response to COVID-19, providing vaccinators and support to mass testing.
