Good afternoon & welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse on this sunny afternoon!
It’s hard to believe that we are already a quarter of the way through our 2026 season and that May is nearly behind us. However, there is still plenty to look forward to over the coming weeks here at Ripon Racecourse.
We return next Wednesday evening before an exciting double-header on Wednesday 17th June, followed by our ever-popular and glamorous Ladies’ Day on Thursday 18th June one of the highlights of the summer season.
This afternoon’s feature race, the Ripon Cathedral Handicap at 3:40pm, looks set to be a particularly competitive one. The field includes two previous Course & Distance winners in Spioradalta and Spirit Of Acklam, both of whom clearly enjoy the challenge of racing at Ripon. Joining them is the familiar Garden Oasis, a dual winner at the course who, whilst yet to score over this particular distance here, does boast winning form over the distance elsewhere adding to what promises to be an interesting race.
Alongside the racing, we also have a host of free family activities taking place in the Course Enclosure this afternoon, including the ever-popular Barrel Train, Arts & Crafts and Circus Skills, plus plenty more for children to enjoy throughout the day. We are also delighted to welcome Road Stunner to Ripon for the first time, who will be performing live throughout the afternoon from the Bandstand.

Fern Clyde boasts the strongest piece of form, having posted an improved effort when fourth over C&D, and can have a say in proceedings. Sovereign Beach is related to four winners and is worth a second look, but fellow newcomer ETONNANTE is preferred. A half-sister to a Group 2 runner-up in France, Karl Burke’s daughter of Havana Grey may prove good enough at the first time of asking, with a Group 2 entry in Ireland next month suggesting she’s shown plenty at home.

Hood Wink has disappointed since dead-heating for first at Wetherby back in April. He had HARSWELL RIVER well behind on that occasion but the latter reopposes on more favourable terms, having placed in both subsequent outings, and Roger Fell’s filly is taken to turn the tables That’s Enough may improve for this extra test of stamina and will likely get involved if doing so, while Vega’s Virtue could prove the pick of the remainder

The application of cheekpieces appeared to work the oracle for SOLAR COOPER here last time. He pulled readily clear of the opposition to return the convincing winner and Mark Walford’s charge may well defy a 6lb penalty on that evidence. Simba’s Pride arrives in fine form having scored at Hamilton before going close at this venue. He looks sure to feature once again and is preferred to the maiden winner North West Gal.

El Matador looks worth a try over this longer trip after running too keenly at Redcar and the hopes of any faithful supporter rest on him settling better this time. With that considered, a chance is taken on LONDONER, who is a dual winner over 1m2f and is better than the face value of his record on turf suggests. Spioradalta had a couple of these behind when he won over C&D last month and also warrants close inspection.
RACE 5
JET WARRIOR has hit form at the right time and is hard to oppose under a 5lb penalty after a ready success at Ayr last week. Hurstwood is a four-time C&D winner, including this race twice, and has a feasible chance of making things tough for the selection, while Tarlac is another track-and-trip winner with strong each-way credentials. Tickets is relatively unexposed on turf and could also have a say.
RACE 6
SOMETHING won this last year by over two lengths and, racing off 2lb lower now, he has to warrant serious consideration. He has his first start for Liam Bailey after leaving Stuart Williams and showed signs of a return to form when third in a better race at Doncaster last month. Spartan Times has also won here, but that was off a 13lb lower figure and So Alex could be the bigger danger returning to turf after a deserved break.

South Parade drops to this class for the first time since last August and if she can get anywhere near to her better form, she is racing off a mark well within her capabilities. Our Absent Friends has a good draw, but his better efforts have come on ground with cut in and preference is for HERAKLES. He may be due to go down 1lb for future contests, but won with ease at Nottingham and an added 6lb may not stop him from following up.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
