Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the first meeting of the 2025 season at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse.

Building on the significant investment made in the Weighing Room during 2023/24, which enhanced the facilities for all users, this winter we focussed on the first phase of a two-year project aimed at upgrading the Stable Staff accommodation. We will now have 15 ensuite bedrooms, with an additional four to be added next winter. This initiative is part of our commitment to continuously invest in the infrastructure throughout the entire racecourse.

In addition to the Stable Staff accommodation, our catering partners, CGC Event Caterers, have completed a comprehensive refurbishment of the coffee shop in the Club Enclosure. This revamped space has been named The Garden Oasis, in recognition of the racecourse’s reputation as Yorkshire’sGarden Racecourse and the six-time course and distance winner of the same name graces us with his presence in the final race of the day, The Go Racing in Yorkshire Apprentice Handicap.

We have some great action on the track this afternoon with the Ripon ‘Cock o’ the North’ Handicap, the Ripon Silver Bowl and the Armstrong Memorial all looking highly competitive and featuring some names which will be very familiar to Ripon regulars such as Fortamour, Dakota Gold & Ey Up it’s the Boss. This afternoon we are thrilled to have Steve Marsden on the bandstand who will be performing before and between the races.

We hope you have a fantastic afternoon and look forward to seeing you again soon!

THE QUIET GENT (2.00) & THE OUTLAW (4.50) trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, distance of 250 miles MIDDLE AGES (2.35) trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, distance of 228 miles LAST SHAMARDAL (4.50) trained by J Channon, West Ilsley, distance of 213 miles FLAGON DRY (4.50) trained by W Greatrex, Upper Lambourn, distance of 211 miles FAR ABOVE THE LAW (3 10) trained by A Haynes, OVERNIGHT OATS (5.25) trained by J Owen, HIGH POINT (4.15) trained by K P De Foy, CAIRDEAS (3.10) trained by W Haggas, all Newmarket, distance of 172 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

THE QUIET GENT can give weight and a beating to his rivals on his seasonal bow. He posted two solid efforts on the all-weather towards the back end of last year, building on his Wolverhampton debut second when making all at Kempton, and is likely to be an even better three-year-old. Miss Yorkshire met trouble in running when runner-up on her debut over 7f at Newcastle and must enter calculations, while the upped-in-trip Marajito also holds solid claims. Kennedys Pass makes most appeal of the newcomers.

WIN: THE QUIET GENT

RACE 2

WIN:

RACE 3

DANGER: MISS YORKSHIRE

Middle Ages was green when eighth on his debut over 7f at Sandown in July last year and he may have improved during his time away from the track. However, it could be worth focusing on a couple of newcomers, namely EMERALD ISLAND and Gravitas. The latter is a full-brother to Group 3 winner River Of Stars and will likely know his job, but David Menuisier’s Galiway colt edges the vote as he is certainly bred to have plenty of ability

GREEN PURSUITran out an impressivewinneron his seasonal/stable debut at Catterick last Wednesday and, with the promise of more to come, he is fancied to follow up under a 6lb penalty. Lord Roxby showed plenty as a juvenile and is likely to be better at three, while the top-rated Cairdeas mayimprove having undergone a gelding operation. Far Above The Law and American Style are others to keep an eye on.

WIN: GREEN PURSUIT

RACE 4

DANGER: LORD ROXBY

FORTAMOUR counts the 2022 and 2024 editions of this race among his six previous C&D victories and is weighted to be a key player from just 1lb higher than his latest winning mark. The selections’s lack of a recent run is a potential stumbling block and creates some hope forlastyear’s third, Danzan, who could have a big sayfrom 5lb lower this time. Wobwobwob, Rock Opera and Cairn Gorm are others to keep a close eye on in the betting market

WIN: FORTAMOUR DANGER: DANZAN

RACE 5

EY UP ITS THE BOSS is already a dual C&D winner and, having finished a creditable third off this mark in a similarly competitive handicap when last seen, there is a lot to like about the six-year-old’s chances ofmaking awinning seasonal debut. Lord Protector is feared most resuming off 10lb below his last winning rating, although Financer and Wintercrack are others with solid place claims in this company.

RACE

6

The Outlaw has won both starts since being stepped up to a mile but he is yet to place on the turf despite three attempts, which has to be a concern for his supporters. FlagonDryprogressednicelyasatwo-year-old,withafifthandasecondatWolverhampton before a narrow win at Southwell, and he could have more to offer this season, but LAST SHAMARDAL may have their measure. Another making his turf debut, an added 3lb might not be enough to stop him completing the hat-trick.

RACE

7

Creatif changed hands for €140,000 after finishing third in France last time and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the market. However, AL AMEED looks the way to go. The son of Kodiac has filled the runner-up berth at Kempton the last twice and he sets the standard with a rating of 84. Lady La Fay is another to keep an eye on after her fourth at Doncaster

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Owner: The Quiet Gents

Trainer: Ralph Beckett, Kimpton Down

Sponsor: R M Beckett Ltd

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of six furlongs. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful. There are a variety of reasons why the three to five-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACEFORM

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a mi nimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

5-2 Last Shamardal (IRE), 11-4 The Outlaw (IRE), 5-1 Flagon Dry (IRE), 15-2 Bebside (GB), 10-1 Epicurian Lad (GB), 16-1 Criminal Shore (IRE), 28-1 That Lucas Fella (IRE), 100-1 Orchestral Wave (GB)

Progressive hat-trick seekers THE OUTLAW and Last Shamardal will likely come to the fore here, assuming that they’ll both translate their all-weather form to turf Choosing between them isn’t easy and the percentage call is The Outlaw, who did the job well from the front at Kempton last time and perhaps the addition of blinkers will help eke out a bit more from him. Bebside is best of the rest, though it’s still early days where Flagon Dry is concerned and he also needs a second look.

Trainer: Harriet Bethell, Arnold

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70 This race is also restricted to apprentice riders only

6 10 0 (1)

Jockey: Warren Fentiman (3)

Form: 040113- CD

Breeder: Daniel Shapiro

TIMEFORM VIEW C&D winner who had an excellent 2024, gaining a fourth success of the campaign at Haydock (1m, heavy) in October. Far from disgraced despite seemingly finding stamina stretched when third of 4 in handicap at Newmarket (10f) on final start and respected on return under promising young rider Star Rati

2 DUTCH DECOY (GB) (187)

Ch g Dutch Art - The Terrier

Owner: Owners Group 052

Trainer: Charlie Johnston, Middleham

Sponsor: Owners Group

8 10 0 (5)

Jockey: Archie Young (3)

Form: 324600- D

Breeder: Bumble Bloodstock & Cheveley Park Stud

TIMEFORM VIEW Tough, useful handicapper who ran right up to his best when runner-up in Golden Mile at Goodwood in August. Ended the season below his best but the assessor has given him a chance on return and he’s certainly worth a second look back from 6 months off.

3 BOWOOD (GB) (84)

5 9 10 (6)

Jockey: Elle-May Croot (6)

Owner: Making Headway Racing & Star Racing Form: 0622-40 CD

Trainer: Ivan Furtado, Wiseton

Breeder: Papillon Stables Sarl

TIMEFORM VIEW Made an excellent start for this yard, the second leg of his hat-trick coming over C&D in August Not at quite the same level in a couple of AW starts earlier this year but his present mark does demand that bit more back on turf

4 YERMANTHERE (IRE) (184)

Ch g Fast Company (IRE) - Fast Jazz (IRE)

7 9 10 (2)

Jockey: Tom Kiely-Marshall

Owner: Habton Racing Form: 001600-

Trainer: Tim Easterby, Malton

Sponsor: Easthorpe Hall Stud

Breeder: Kilnamoragh Stud

TIMEFORM VIEW Capitalised on an easing mark down in class when narrowly prevailing in 9-runner handicap at Carlisle (6.9f) in August. Unable to replicate that in trio of starts thereafter however, albeit seemingly not 100% when well-beaten last of 10 at Leicester on final outing. Star Rating

Jockey: Cian Horgan (6)

Form: 330000- D

Breeder: Haras D’Etreham

TIMEFORM VIEW Capitalised on reduced mark when landing 14-runner handicap at York (8.8f) last June. Respectable placed efforts next 2 starts but he ended the campaign on a low-key note, fitting of a visor not having desired effect when seventh of 9 in handicap at Hamilton (9.2f) in September

10 9 6 (4)

Jockey: Jake Dickson (10)

Form: 123263- CD

Breeder: Meon Valley Stud

TIMEFORM VIEW 6-time C&D winner who was successful twice here during a productive 2024, ending the campaign with a good third in a first-time visor in 12-runner handicap at Pontefract (1m) in September Likely he’ll give another good account returned to this venue. Cheekpieces back on. Star Rating

7 OVERNIGHT OATS (GB) (13)

B g Muhaarar - Integral

Owner: GTS Racing

Trainer: James Owen, Newmarket

5 9 5 (3)

Jockey: Mason Paetel (8)

Form: 210510 D

Breeder: Cheveley Park Stud Limited

TIMEFORM VIEW Had a highly-productive AW campaign, his Southwell victory last month his seventh since November In need of stronger gallop (pulled hard) when down the field back at that venue 13 days ago and he appeals as the type to bounce back.

BROKEN SPEAR (GB) (15)

Owner: Mr Tony Coyle

Trainer: Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood, Norton

9 8 13 (8)

Jockey: Rhys Elliott (3)

Form: 0-33134

Breeder: Heather Raw

TIMEFORM VIEW Latest win at Newcastle in March. Creditable fourth of 9 in handicap (11/1) at Southwell (6.1f) 15 days ago, unsuited by drop in trip. Any easing of the ground will aid his cause back on turf/returned to this longer trip. Star RatingHHHII Official BHA Rating 70

DECLARED RUNNERS 8

Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 6.

2024: DO I DREAM (IRE) 5 8 7 Sam Feilden 9-4 (Ben Haslam) 9 ran

Stewards Note: BOWOOD: Following its run on 23/1/2025 it was reported that the horse ran too free. Betting Forecast:

10-3 On The River (GB), 9-2 Garden Oasis (GB), 13-2 Bowood (GB), 7-1 Dutch Decoy (GB), Overnight Oats (GB), 15-2 Broken Spear (GB), 12-1 Yermanthere (IRE), Pisanello (IRE)

C&D winner ON THE RIVER enjoyed a highly-productive 2024, winning 4 times and, having won first time out previously he could be worth siding with on return, with his rider able to claim a valuable 3lb off his back. Dutch Decoy ended last season below his best but lurks on a handy mark as a result and he’s a threat if ready to roll back from 6 months off Course specialist Garden Oasis is another to consider
