Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for our Traditional Family Day.

We’re delighted to welcome back Wooden Spoon for their 30th annual charity Raceday. Wooden Spoon is a fantastic charity dedicated to helping children who are disadvantaged physically, mentally, or socially using the power of sport to transform young lives. To learn more about their incredible work, please turn to page 10 of your racecard.

We’ve got a thrilling afternoon of racing ahead, plus plenty of entertainment for children in the Course Enclosure! Don’t miss the return of Professor Dan with his Magic Show and Punch & Judy show, balloon modelling, face painting, The Barrel Train, A bouncy castle & inflatables and the ever-popular National Festival Circus.

Our first race, the Sterne Properties Supporting Yorkshire Wooden Spoon Apprentice Handicap sees the return of a number of previous winners, making it one to watch. Another Baar achieved victory here twice in 2023, while Thornaby Pearl and Brian the Snail won one race a piece at Ripon in the same year. Herakles won here a year later in 2024. With such a strong field of runners, it’s shaping up to be a very exciting race.

We hope you have a wonderful day with us and look forward to welcoming you back at our next meeting on Thursday 29th May for another exciting day of racing and family fun.

With very best regards,

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

Now that SERGEANT MAYER has deservedly regained the winning thread with a determined performance at Redcar, the son of Soldier’s Call is likely to have more to come off3lb higher Arlington did itwell himselfwhen scoring comfortablyat Southwell and he must be a keyplayer, despite an 8lb highermark. Recent Wolverhamptonwinner Brian The Snail is another to consider.

WIN: SERGEANT MAYER

RACE 2

DANGER: ARLINGTON

By a speedy sire in Mehmas and hailing from a family that Richard Fahey has had success with, FAST GENERATION may have enough quality to strike first time out. Anaisa showed major improvement from her first to her second start to score at Thirsk earlier in the month, but a 4lb penalty will make life much tougher A well-bred sort by Kameko, Spinning Lizzie looks one to monitor for market support on debut, with Danny Tudhope a noteworthy booking.

WIN: FAST GENERATION

RACE 3

DANGER: ANAISA

C&D winner COSMOS RAJ should appreciate going back up in trip, having scored in comfortable fashion at Hamilton last time out. A 2lb rise could prove lenient and David O’Meara’s charge is preferred toTitainium, whowentwell fora longwayatThirsk and might be suited by dropping back from 1m4f. Jez Bomb and Spioradalta have the form to get involved in proceedings as well.

WIN: COSMOS RAJ

RACE

4

DANGER: TITAINIUM

Having returned to complete a double at Redcar, the unbeaten FLUORESCENCE makes obvious appeal debuting in handicap company Ed Bethell’s filly has made light work of her rivals in both outings to date and an official mark of 85 could prove lenient. MaeAmorended herjuvenile campaignwith a breakthroughvictoryat Wolverhampton and she may serve the most resistance to the selection, ahead of Beaujolais Nouveau.

RACE 5

Pouting did little wrong when finishing a close-up third at Wolverhampton last month and she isn’t taken lightlyreverting to 6fin first-time cheekpieces. However, EIGHTHAVENUE displayed enough speed last season to suggest that this trip will suit and the daughter of Starspangledbanner could be worth chancing on her return to action. Given her pedigree, it is also worth keeping an eye on newcomer Bradley Lane in the betting.

RACE

6

Copper And Five may prove popular after going in at Beverley, despite a 2lb rise. He has won five races off higher marks and is hard to ignore, but preference is for SPRING FESTIVAL. Still a maiden, he ran his best race yet when third at Pontefract last month, beaten less than two lengths, and is entitled to improve for that first start since September. C&DwinnersArranmore andAnnalee Lass are others to take seriously on their better form.

WIN: SPRING FESTIVAL

RACE 7

DANGER:

Hype Merchant is interesting on his first start for Roger Fell after leaving the David Loughnane yard and if first-time cheekpieces and new surroundings bring improvement, he can go close in a tight contest. BARMYBLADE is just preferred, though, and with two wins from three starts this season, the latest here off 7lb lower, he could be difficult to reel in. Sanbona has more to do after his Redcar third, but may fill the same position.

WIN: BARMYBLADE

DANGER: HYPE MERCHANT

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The Wooden Spoon Society began on the rugby field in 1983 when England finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations Championship. Since then, “Spoon” – as it is now affectionately known – has grown into one of the UK and Ireland’s fastest highly thought of charities dedicated to helping children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve their lives while harnessing the spirit and values of rugby. The charity is one of the largest funders of respite and medical treatment centers, sensory enhancement therapeutic facilities, specialist playgrounds, sports activity areas, and community-based programs in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In partnership with the rugby community, both Union and League, we involve some of rugby’s top sporting role models who provide support and help in raising awareness of its invaluable work.

The charity comprises of 40 regional volunteer committees, a national HQ team, and over 10,000 members who wear its distinctive tie representing the colours of the 4 Home Nations. Regional committees undertake local fundraising activities with the money raised being spent on projects within their local community. Today, the Yorkshire Committee proudly celebrates 33 years since its foundation on the 19th May 1992, during which it has provided over £2.5 million of funding for 107 projects within the region.

Today, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Yorkshire “Spoon” Race Day at Ripon. We particularly thank Martin Sterne of Sterne Properties and his family for sponsoring the first race, and Paul Hammond MD of Hammond Associates for sponsoring the second race. We also thank Spoon member James and Jane Hutchinson of the Ripon Racecourse executive, and the racecourse staff, for their continued and valued support. Finally, we sincerely thank Spoon members and their guests for supporting this event over 3 decades.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for fillies aged three-years-old and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is another Novice Stakes for fillies, this time run over a distance of six furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER

BARMYBLADE hasn’t looked back in 2025 and a 7lb rise for his recent impressive C&D success doesn’t look sufficient to prevent him from garnering a third victory of the season. In-form maiden Sanbona appeals as the one to chase him home ahead of Lima Sierra and Hype Merchant.
