Wooden Spoon is a fantastic charity dedicated to helping children who are disadvantaged physically, mentally, or socially using the power of sport to transform young lives. We’ve got a thrilling afternoon of racing ahead, we are delighted to welcome back Ripon City Band who will be playing throughout the day on the bandstand, plus plenty of entertainment for children in the Course Enclosure! Don’t miss the return of Professor Dan with his Magic Show and Punch & Judy show, along with balloon modelling, face painting, a penalty shootout, bouncy castle and infant soft play area for our younger racegoers. New for this year, we also have some special guests making their appearance around the Course Enclosure throughout the afternoon, so be sure to keep an eye out and say hello!
Our feature race of the afternoon, the 3:50 British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap, looks set to be a competitive contest and features the return of previous Course & Distance winner Anaisa. A familiar name to many racegoers after winning the Champion 2yo Trophy here last season, she returns to Ripon aiming for another success at the course.

Plenty in with chances in the opener and TROJAN SOLDIER just edges it given he showed his battling qualities to gain a deserved success on the all-weatherat Southwell last time. Going back up in trip shouldn’t be a problem and he was performing well on turf this time last year, so switching to the grass shouldn’t inconvenience him either Rupert The Prince is a model of consistency and joins Scottish Dancer and No More Bolero on the shortlist.

The Cookstown Cafu commands close attention on the back of his all-weather success at Newcastle, while similar sentiments apply to Musselburgh winner Spirit Catcher FINLAGGAN makes most appeal, though, on the basis that he improved markedly on his handicap debut at Pontefract, when finishing a neck second, and is likely to have a lot more to come. The booking of Cieren Fallon suggests connections are confident.

Alpine Girl showed her appreciation for the return to turf when going in over 5f at Pontefract and she is just as effective at this trip. Saffron Dandy and Lebron Power give Richard Hannon a decent hand, while Powdering has slipped to 1lb below her last winning mark. Space Bear arrives in good form, but SHALLOW was only just denied at Yarmouth by a mare who went on to make the frame in Group 3 company and Richard Spencer’s five-year-old probably meets nothing of that calibre here.

Ralph Beckett is usually worth following when he sends one to Ripon so the hint must be taken with ZEN DIVA.The daughter of Sergei Prokofiev let down favourite-backers on her final two appearances as a juvenile, but she lost little in defeat and can get off the mark in first-time cheekpieces.The otherswith experience don’t inspire much confidence so it may be a newcomer who puts up the biggest fight, with 420,000gns Ardad filly Black Orchid obviously the most interesting. Kyrenia is worth a second glance

ARRANMORE has been in fine fettle on Tapeta, finding only one too good when attempting to complete a Southwell double. A 1lb rise isn’t ideal given his age and, therefore, lack of scope for improvement, but he is the only runner who arrives in good form. Fellow veteran Ring Of Gold has also been holding his own on the all-weather, although he has never managed to win on turf Oilisa, Woodleigh and Barleybrown may be the bigger threats.

Now that SIMBA’S PRIDE has got his head in front, he could kick on and progress through the handicap ranks. Michael Dods’ charge appreciated the drop to this trip when scoring readily on his handicap debut at Hamilton and, unexposed as a sprinter, there is likely plenty more improvement in him. Gunalt Wavelength and Ellie’s De Vega are the ones expected to put up the most resistance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
The Wooden Spoon Society began on the rugby field in 1983 when England finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations Championship. Since then, “Spoon” – as it is now affectionately known – has grown into one of the UK and Ireland’s highly thought of charities dedicated to helping children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve their lives while harnessing the spirit and values of rugby.
Spoon is one of the largest funders of respite and medical treatment centers, sensory enhancement therapeutic facilities, specialist playgrounds, sports activity areas, and communitybased programmes in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In partnership with the rugby community, both Union and League, we involve some of rugby’s top sporting role models who provide support and help in raising awareness of its invaluable work.
The charity comprises of 40 regional volunteer committees, a national HQ team, and over 10,000 members who wear its distinctive tie representing the colours of the 4 Home Nations. Regional committees undertake local fundraising activities with the money raised being spent on projects within their local community. Today, the Yorkshire Committee proudly celebrates 34 years since its foundation on the 19th May 1992, during which it has provided over £2.6 million of funding for 116 projects within the region. In the last year we have contributed £174,000 to 9 completed projects.

This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 and are ridden by apprentice riders. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
