Good afternoon and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for the final meeting of our 2026 season. It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another season; it seems like only yesterday we were preparing to open the gates back in April. We’ve enjoyed a fantastic summer of racing here at Ripon, and we’re delighted to welcome you back for one final afternoon as we bring the season to a close. It’s great to welcome Theakston Brewery back to the racecourse for the Theakston Final Furlong Festival. Head down to the Claro Lawn to sample some of their excellent beers, enjoy live music from Mark Farrows and soak up the atmosphere. Over on the Bandstand, we’re also pleased to welcome Ripon City Band, who will be performing throughout the afternoon, so be sure to head over and have a listen. We’re also marking our Harvest Festival today by collecting donations for Ripon Community House. Thank you to everyone who has brought something along – your donations will help support people in our local community. Our feature race this afternoon is the Ripon Cathedral City of the Dales Handicap, run over six furlongs at 3.28pm. Seven previous Course & Distance winners are set to line up, so it promises to be a competitive race. As we reach the end of our 2026 season, the team and I would like to thank all of our sponsors for their support today and throughout the year, as well as our Racegoers, Annual Badge holders, Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and everyone who plays a part in racing here at Ripon. Our 2027 fixture list is now confirmed and can be found on the back of today’s racecard and on our website. We very much hope you’ll join us again next year. For now, there’s still one final afternoon of racing to enjoy. Have a wonderful day and thank you for being part of our 2026 season.

JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

TODAY’S TIPS RACE

1

Although somewhat disappointing when only fourth on his most recent outing at Windsor, Bulletsnap may have suffered from racing up the centre. William Haggas’ colt should be in the mix if replicating his earlier form, but SCENIC ROUTE rates as the most solid proposition. The son of Sioux Nation arrives on the back of a good third in class 2 company at York and this looks easier. Time To Play is the pick of the remainder.

WIN: SCENIC ROUTE

RACE

2

Although thwarted in her hat-trick bid when fourth at Kempton earlier this month, FOREST BERRY still looks capable of better. The Waldgeist filly had to make her effort earlier than ideal and this small-field affair may see her in a better light. Nursery debutant Palace Legacy is heading in the right direction judged on his latest second at Leicester and he’s feared most, ahead of Aphra Behn.

WIN: FOREST BERRY

RACE

3 4

DANGER: OUR ABSENT FREINDS EYE OF DUBAI was fitted with blinkers for the first time at Ayr last week and resumed winning ways in the Bronze Cup. The son of Havana Grey bids to win this for the third time in succession and, competing off the same mark as last year, another bold bid looks in the offing. Dark Thirty faces an easier task than of late and is one to take seriously, while the recent Windsor third Indian Run may well reverse running on better terms with the winner Trefor.

WIN: EYE OF DUBAI

RACE

5

6 7

8

DANGER: KINGS MERCHANT

Koala Rose and Walking On Stars are closely matched on official ratings, although the latter has done all of her racing on the all-weather so far. Both can be involved and so might Neswick, but WADACRE ICON is preferred. Charlie Johnston’s gelding was unfancied on his debut at Carlisle, and that lack of market support was telling in the early stages after he missed the break and was anchored in rear. However, the son of Nathaniel picked up well to chase home an impressive winner late on and he should be more streetwise this time.

WIN: WADACRE ICON

RACE

DANGER: SHOWTIME MAHOMES

Recent Catterick winner Kings Merchant merits consideration raised only 2lb. He’s preferred to Valentine Catcher, who placed yet again when third at Leicester last time, but it could pay to stick with HURSTWOOD. Peter Niven’s charge arrives off the back of a double at Redcar, having made all on both occasions, and he could take some pegging back if allowed his own way in front once again.

WIN: HURSTWOOD

RACE

DANGER: DARK THIRTY

GOOD KARMA has gone close in tougher handicaps on his last couple of outings. He finished a solid third back over 6f at Pontefract last week and returns to this lower level with solid claims. Showtime Mahomes posted a better effort at Catterick last time and that points to big run here, while although Big Apple Jack finally opened his account with a victory at Hamilton, Triple P has more scope and thus makes more appeal.

WIN: GOOD KARMA

RACE

DANGER: PALACE LEGACY

Having scored on two of her last three outings, TIVA is progressing nicely. The four-year-old is only 3lb higher than her latest victory at Doncaster and, as a previous C&D winner, she’ll have no issue returning to this venue. Our Absent Friends arrives on the back of two creditable efforts in defeat and he’s forecast to be in the thick of the action once more, along with Rock Of England.

WIN: TIVA

RACE

DANGER: BULLETSNAP

DANGER: KOALA ROSE

A busy period might have caught up with Zimmerman, who was ultimately well held when bidding for a four-timer at Chester. He does still merit respect as the sole C&D winner in this field, but TARBAT NESS is preferred. John Berry won the corresponding event in 2024 and his representative pushed a short-priced favourite all the way at Newcastle latest. Although yet to defy a mark this high, it might be that a similar level of performance will suffice. Talismans Time heads the remainder.

WIN: TARBAT NESS

DANGER: ZIMMERMAN 7

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 85.

Horse

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

SIX FURLONGS

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

Horse

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

SIXTH RACE 4.40

Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

SEVENTH RACE 5.15 THE JOZEF WHITE LAST DAY OF FREEDOM NOVICE STAKES (CLASS 3) (GBB/GBBPLUS RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile and about four furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
