Good afternoon and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!

Good afternoon and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse! It’s great to have both MND Association and William Hill representatives with us today, we have a great programme of racing supporting the work that MNDA does and remembering the families and individuals affected by the disease.

We are proud to be William Hill’s longest standing sponsorship, with the partnership lasting over 30 years and we can’t wait to see who adds their name to the roll of honour shortly after 3.20pm this afternoon. The trophy has not ventured out of Yorkshire in the last 15 years, and with a strong Yorkshire contingent again today there’s a fair chance it could stay in the county another year.

Our first race this afternoon is the Juddmonte EBF Restricted Novice Stakes over a mile. It’s a fantastic initiative by Juddmonte to support a series of developmental races across the season and we hope to see some stars of the future on show in this race this afternoon.

We have just three meetings remaining in our 2025 season after today, the next of which is Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 25th August. It’s a great opportunity to get the family together for free entertainment and activities, music on the bandstand and great racing.

We hope you have a wonderful day with us.

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

OHARA’s third over 7f at Ascot has a solid look and stepping up in distance could be an ideal move given his pedigree suggests the additionalyardage should be highlysuitable. Zooter, who was thrown in at the deep end when debuting in the Chesham at Royal Ascot, also looks ready for a mile after finding 7f too sharp at York. Mayaada and Karl Burke’s newcomer Urchin are others to consider

WIN: OHARA

RACE 2

DANGER: ZOOTER

AL SHAHAM impressed when he was successfully introduced over C&D last month and the experience of this venue can only stand him in good stead. Gharma Sutra, who made all in a Ffos Las maiden on debut, was highlytried in theVintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on his next start. This is more attainable and he is a strong contender Gold Queen Kindly can shade Sword Maker for third place.

WIN: AL SHAHAM

RACE 3

DANGER:

Fortamour loves Ripon but has been well held in the two previous editions of this race, while It Just Takes Time boasts a C&D win off 10lb higher but only managed seventh in last year’s renewal. Of more interest is WRECK IT RYLEY, who had It Just Takes Time back in second when he won over track and trip just under a year ago and appeals with a favoured visor replacing cheekpieces. Novello Lad, Hectic and Dicko The Legend are others with solid credentials.

WIN: WRECK IT RYLEY

RACE 4

DANGER: FORTAMOUR

Richard Faheylifted this prize 12 months ago and is taken to repeat the dose courtesyof ROCK OPERA. Following a series ofcreditable runs in defeat, includingwhen a close-up third atYork latest, he appears to be coming to the boil and, from a handydraw, looks to have an excellent chance. Rousing Encore finished fourth in that York contest and must be respected given the manner in which he travelled that day. Others to note include First Folio and Mister Sox.

WIN: ROCK OPERA

RACE 5

DANGER: ROUSING ENCORE

Carron had struggled in two previous handicap starts prior to scoring in comfortable fashion at Leicesterand the three-year-old should be a real force. However, theveteran GARDEN OASIS is already proven around here with seven Ripon successes on his CV Tim Easterby’s charge arrives following a narrow Pontefract triumph and, from just 1lb higher, can enhance his impressive track record. Havana Prince is also noted.

WIN: GARDEN OASIS

RACE 6

DANGER: CARRON

SPRING CHORUS won at Beverley in May and finished a resolute second back at the same venue last time The daughter of New Approach should be refreshed by a short break and Michael Herrington’s inmate looks to have a fighting chance off her current mark. Phaedra could land a blow back on her favoured ground, while Shielas Well is worth noting having won over 1m2f here in June.

WIN: SPRING CHORUS

RACE 7

DANGER: PHAEDRA

BAY DREAM BELIEVER was winning for the first time since landing this contest last year when scoring at Doncaster a fortnight ago. She looked to have plenty left in the tank and is one to keep on the right side of raised only 2lb. 2023 winner Little Ted was no match for the selection last term, so Scarriff may prove a bigger danger having won at Musselburgh in July

WIN: BAY DREAM BELIEVER

DANGER: SCARRIFF

GHARMA SUTRA

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful. Runners must be EBF eligible and in Bands C & D.

PLAY SMARTER

Having showed plenty to work on when sixth on debut at Ascot, SUSPENDED SENTENCE didn’t find things panning out ideally from a wide berth when fourth in a Chester maiden 3 weeks ago. Michael Bell’s charge undoubtedly remains with potential, including at this longer trip, and is fancied to make a bold bid from a handy draw this time. Ohara could emerge as the chief danger, ahead of Mayaada. Spirit of The Wood is another to note.

PLAY SMARTER

An intriguing contest despite the small field with GOLD QUEEN KINDLY narrowly selected to emerge victorious. Karl Burke’s colt did well to overcome inexperience and the run of the race to make a winning debut at Pontefract 10 days ago and he appeals as the type to take a significant step forward with that under his belt. Gharma Sutra will find this easier than his latest Group 2 assignment and looks the danger ahead of Al Shaham.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

He is second choice, with Rock Opera, who was just ahead of Rousing Encore at York but avoided the traffic problems that rival encountered, also of real interest.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 63 to 82. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PHAEDRA had a couple of possible excuses for being a bit below par on her hat-trick attempt at Lingfield and can resume winning ways back from a break. Spring Chorus has looked better than ever this year and is the obvious threat.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

BAY DREAM BELIEVER justified good support when resuming winning ways at Doncaster 2 weeks ago and a 2lb rise shouldn’t prevent her making a bold bid to supplement her victory in this contest 12 months ago. The refitting of a visor can see Young Fire in a better light and he’s feared along with Light Up Our Stars. Infantry Officer shouldn’t be dismissed lightly, either
