Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen, and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse!
It’s amazing how quickly the time flies – we’re already into the second half of our season, with this evening’s fixture being the ninth of our sixteen meetings. Tonight’s entertainment on the Bandstand comes from the talented Terra Firma, who we’re delighted to welcome to Ripon Racecourse for the first time.
Our fourth race, the Mark’s Choice, Ripon’s Most-Winning Horse Handicap at 19:40, celebrates our course record holder. Mark’s Choice is one of six previous Course & Distance winners in the field. Can he make it an incredible 11 wins at Ripon? You can read more about his remarkable Ripon record on page 23 of this racecard.
There’s still plenty to look forward to this month, with the Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting on Saturday 18th July, followed by another evening fixture later in the month on Monday 27th.
August promises us three fantastic meetings. On Monday 3rd August, we have our first Family Day of the summer holidays, featuring the Scoops & Saddles Ice Cream Championships, hosted in partnership with Visit North Yorkshire and Ripon BID. On Saturday 15th August, we celebrate another one of our highlights of the season – the William Hill Great St Wilfrid meeting. Then, join us on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August for Curtains’ Up at the Races, another fun-filled Family Day packed with entertainment for all ages.

The daughter of Ardad showed a willing attitude as that race unfolded and she can make it third-time lucky with the experience to draw upon. Travellers Girl and Halcon are also entitled to be wiser and merit betting checks, while Texting and Thunder Filly are notable debutantes to bear in mind.

ROCK OF ENGLAND arrives in fine fettle having won two of his last three starts, including over C&D last time, and the six-year-old is expected to have more to offer, despite a 6lb rise from the handicapper TeesAggregates had been running well prior to getting his head back in front at Catterick last time and is likely to enter the reckoning. Course specialist Mark’s Choice is feared most of the remainder.

VIETNORM improved for stepping up to 1m2f when winning here and at Beverley before winning a third race on the bounce when sent over hurdles at Market Rasen Adrian Keatley’s gelding is expected to be a tough nut to crack given his current vein of form. The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

No horse has enjoyed as much success at Ripon as Mark’s Choice.
Since his first run here in May 2018, he has made 29 appearances at the Garden Racecourse, winning a record 10 races and finishing in the places a further 10 times.
Owned throughout his career by Cragg Wood Racing, Mark’s Choice has succeeded previous Ripon record holder, Piper’s Note, an eight-time course winner who, remarkably, was also owned by Cragg Wood Racing. He has been trained by Ruth Carr, Sam England, Adrian Keatley and now Gemma Tutty. During his time at Ripon, he has been ridden by 13 different jockeys, with 8 riding him to victory.
Across 72 career starts, Mark’s Choice has also won at Nottingham and Ayr, while his Ripon performances alone have earned more than £59,000 in prize money.
His biggest Ripon success came in the William Hill Silver Trophy Handicap Stakes in 2021, followed by an excellent third in the Great St Wilfrid Handicap in 2022. His most recent Ripon victory came in September 2025, with his latest appearance at the course in June 2026.

Our final race today is held in memory of David Chapman, a stalwart of Yorkshire racing who passed away in 2011.
David is fondly remembered as an excellent trainer and pioneer with a reputation for taking underachieving and often problematic horses under his wing and turning them into regular winners.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is.
