Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for our Scoops & Saddles Family Day.
We are delighted to be hosting the North Yorkshire Ice Cream Championships this afternoon in collaboration with Visit North Yorkshire and Ripon BID. Be sure to head over to the Claro Lawn to sample the entries and cast your vote for your favourite ice cream. The winner will be announced later this afternoon.
We’ve got some competitive action on the track, with the feature race, the Wilmot-Smith Memorial Handicap, taking centre stage at 3:54pm. This race is run in memory of the members of the Wilmot-Smith family, whose contribution to the success of the racecourse over many years has been immense. We are delighted to welcome so many members of the family here with us today. The race itself looks a cracker, with three of the seven runners boasting winning form over this course and distance.
Over in the Course Enclosure, the fun continues for our younger racegoers. There’s face painting, a bouncy castle, balloon modelling, arts and crafts, plus performances from Professor Dan with Punch & Judy shows and magic throughout the afternoon. You’ll also find the ever-popular barrel train rides, a penalty shootout and a soft play area for the little ones.
We are also delighted to welcome Hazjak, who will be performing live on the Bandstand throughout the afternoon, so don’t forget to stop by and enjoy the entertainment.
The Bowel Cancer Screening Team is also with us today in the Paddock Enclosure. Please do take a few moments to visit their stand near the Parade Ring. This important initiative is taking place across Yorkshire’s racecourses this season and is helping to save lives through early detection.
Today marks the first of our race meetings during August. We return on Saturday 15th for the prestigious William Hill Great St Wilfrid fixture, followed by another Family Day on Bank Holiday Monday (31st), before racing again on Tuesday 1st September as we head towards our Season Finale later in the month.
We hope you have a wonderful afternoon and enjoy everything the day has to offer.
JAMES HUTCHINSON
Managing Director

Ripon Racecourse requests that you observe all Health & Safety requirements whilstyou are here today. Please do not stand in the aisles of the Grandstand as this could prevent access in an emergency We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse.
First Aid points are located in the Claro Rooms in the Paddock Enclosure and to the rear of the Course Enclosure building.

D O’MEARA won the 4.24 race in 2022 and 2023. The stable is represented by Mao Shang Wong in the race today.
The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years:
3.54 Grant Wood (won off 80 down 3lb to 77); 4.54 Dacres Cross (won off 70 down 5lb to 65).
QUEEN SANA (2.54) trained by O Sangster, Marlborough, distance of 220 miles SECRET HARVEST (2.54) trained by C Allen, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles ZOUSTAR DREAMS (3.24) trained by E Dunlop, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles WAR GAMING (2.24) trained by G Scott, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles. CREATIVE QUEEN (3.24) trained by W Haggas, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles.

War Gaming sets the standard with an official rating of 79 and might find a bit extra in first-time blinkers, but THE MEAN FIDDLER went desperately close on his racecourse introduction and can improve past that rival. The Karl Burke-trained Reflect On Glorywas a well-held third over C&D but looks certain to progress, and even Sole Ruler has hinted at some ability
WIN: THE MEAN FIDDLER
DANGER: WAR GAMING
This won’t take much winning and the consistent Queen Sana probablywon’t get many better opportunities to shed her maiden tag, but the presence of ROYALE UNION in here could throw a spanner in the works. The daughter of Starman has posted a couple of solid efforts over 7fwithout quite seeing out the trip, and it’s possible she could take a big step forward now eased in distance. Secret Harvest heads the remainder
WIN: ROYALE UNION
DANGER: QUEEN SANA
Progressive three-year-old ZOUSTAR DREAMS has won three of her last four starts, with the most recent a cosy Nottingham triumph, and Ed Dunlop’s filly might not be done improving just yet despite a further 5lb rise. Angel Numbers merits respect having made a successful start to life with Ruth Carr at Thirsk and, although Creative Queen hasn’t pulled up any trees in handicaps so far, perhaps the addition of cheekpieces will help.
WIN: ZOUSTAR DREAMS
ANGEL NUMBERS
DARK CLOUD RISING won over C&D before finishing third at Pontefract when he certainly had excuses - slowly away and short of room over a furlong out David O’Meara’s charge is worth another chance given a lot seemed to go wrong last time and his proven effectiveness at this track is a big plus. Ayr second Lord Roxby heads the list of dangers from Saint Lawrence.
WIN: DARK CLOUD RISING DANGER: LORD ROXBY
Only five declared for this handicap but it’s competitive stuff given there are three last-time-out winners going to post. Poet’s Dawn is the sole course scorer and he’s going in search of a hat-trick, while Polygram stayed on well to win at Pontefract. They’ve both got EVERYONEKNOWSADAVE to beat, though, as he was really impressive when scoring at Nottingham and might still be improving.
WIN: EVERYONEKNOWSADAVE DANGER: POET’S DAWN
Amber Hamur made all at Hamilton and comes here boasting an attractive profile, so commands respect. However, VEGA’S VIRTUE is becoming a bit of a course specialist and won here again last time. Tim Easterby’s charge won’t be far off the pace and is taken to pounce late on. It’s also worth considering Dacres Cross and Hey Havana in an open finale.
WIN: VEGA’S VIRTUE
DANGER: AMBER HAMUR

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This contest is another Novice Stakes, also run over a distance of six furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

This is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
