Good afternoon, and a very warm welcome to our Curtains’ Up at the Races Family Day here at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse this Bank Holiday Monday. Family days here are always a highlight of the season, and this afternoon we have a range of free activities in the Course Enclosure to keep our younger racegoers entertained. From the Circus, bouncy castle, balloon modelling and face painting to Punch & Judy, Magic Shows and fire juggling, there’s plenty to enjoy alongside the eight races on the card today. We are very excited to host our very first Onesie Derby, where our youngest racegoers will have the chance to show off their character onesies in the Parade Ring before heading to the track for 1:00pm to compete in what promises to be the most chaotic race of the day! We’re also pleased to be joined once again by Claire Coupland on the bandstand. Be sure to head over and enjoy her performances throughout the day. On the track, we look forward to a competitive card, including the feature race of the day, the British Stallion Studs EBF Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy at 3.05pm; a Listed contest with £55,000 in prize money up for grabs. We look forward to seeing who will claim their place on the roll of honour this afternoon – can Rogue Jewel repeat her Course and Distance win from The William Hill Great St Wilfrid raceday earlier this month? It’s remarkable how quickly the season has flown. After today, just two fixtures remain – tomorrow’s meeting and then our season finale, the ever-popular Theakston Beer Festival and Harvest Festival on Saturday 26th September. If you are joining us on 26th September, please bring a donation of food or other items for Ripon Community House’s Food Bank. We hope you have a wonderful afternoon with us. JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director 3

TODAY’S TIPS RACE

1

ARENITE should be up to landing a maiden like this. Michael Dods’ charge has shaped with plenty of promise in two starts so far, finishing runner-up at Redcar and Doncaster, and she brings the best form to the table. Of the others, My Boo Boo would have every chance on the evidence of his Windsor second, but it wasn’t as encouraging at Newbury latest. Travellers Girl completes the shortlist.

WIN: ARENITE

RACE

2

PEACE BELLE was deemed good enough for a Grade 2 bumper at Aintree earlier in the year and has made an encouraging start to life on the level. She has improved between runs and is worth another chance, although this won’t be easy because Time Thief was quite taking when making his Yarmouth debut a winning one. Why Not Me also boasts sound claims.

WIN: PEACE BELLE

RACE

3 4 5

6 7 8

DANGER: VOLENTI

Quirke On Parole arrives on the back of a respectable third in handicap company at Pontefract and she merits strong consideration in these calmer waters. Mark Walford’s filly is forecast to be in the thick of the action, but it could be worth taking a chance on the up-in-distance TEN SIXTY SIX. The three-year-old has shaped as if this greater emphasis on stamina could unlock some potential and a first career victory may beckon. Back From Dubai completes the shortlist.

WIN: TEN SIXTY SIX

RACE

DANGER: THORNABY PEARL

LITTLE TED could only manage fourth in a C&D handicap last time. This looks more his level nowadays, having gone close in a off a mark of 52 at Leicester in July and Tim Easterby’s charge looks worth chancing sporting a hood for the first time. Volenti placed at Redcar recently and could feature again in this grade, while Newcastle third Rogers Dream makes more appeal than Trucial Pearl.

WIN: LITTLE TED

RACE

DANGER: SPOKEN TRUTH

ROCK OF ENGLAND has been in sparkling form so far this season, having recorded his third win of the year at Hamilton last month. Only 3lb higher in this lower grade sprint, he gets another chance with Oisin Murphy picking up the reins. Recent Windsor winner Thornaby Pearl also arrives in fine fettle and has to be of interest, while Mark’s Choice could make the frame once again.

WIN: ROCK OF ENGLAND

RACE

DANGER: ROGUE JEWEL

Spoken Truth has been thereabouts in decent handicaps of late and is not one to take lightly off his current mark, but FIREFALL could prove the one to side with. The half-brother to a Group 2 winner had just the four starts for Andre Fabre in France, culminating with a close second in a conditions race at Chantilly, and he could prove better than his opening mark on debut for Ed Bethell’s yard. English Oak also warrants respect.

WIN: FIREFALL

RACE

DANGER: TIME THIEF

NOT MY TYPE has looked every inch a Pattern race performer in the making judged on a ready debut success at Sandown and then a dominant all-the-way Beverley triumph. There could be more to come from William Haggas’ charge and she’s preferred to Rogue Jewel, who boasts a similar profile and a C&D win. Pure Mint also looked smart when scoring at this track and is another to take seriously.

WIN: NOT MY TYPE

RACE

DANGER: MY BOO BOO

DANGER: QUIRKE ON PAROLE

Having got back on the scoresheet at Redcar, this could prove a suitable opportunity for WOODLEIGH to follow up. The five-year-old scored a shade cosily and a 2lb nudge up in the ratings shouldn’t prevent another bold showing, with any ease in the ground forecast to suit. 2024 winner Star Start arrives here in fine fettle and he’s feared most, ahead of Spirit Catcher.

WIN: WOODLEIGH

DANGER: STAR START

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearolds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This six furlong contest for two-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

FIVE FURLONGS

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

SIXTH RACE 4.45 THE NAPOLEONS CASINO AND RESTAURANT LEEDS CLASSIFIED STAKES (CLASS 6) (DIV I)

This race is a one mile, one furlong classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival.

SEVENTH RACE 5.20 THE NAPOLEONS CASINO AND RESTAURANT LEEDS CLASSIFIED STAKES (CLASS 6) (DIV II)

RACE DESCRIPTION

Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

EIGHTH RACE 5.50 THE AJA AMATEUR JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) for four yrs old and upwards ONE MILE, TWO FURLONGS ABOUT 190 YARDS Total prize fund £7000 RACEFORM Owners Prize Money. Winner £3022; Second £1511; Third £755; MEDIAN TIME Fourth £378; Fifth £189. (Penalty Value £3476.90) A SS 2 mins 22.00 secs (FOR CONDITIONS OF THIS RACE SEE PAGE 39) RECORD TIME

This is a one mile and two and a half furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.
